Sail on!

The life of the sea has always fascinated me. It is ancient, primordial, mysterious.

In a way I envy you! Best of luck in all this weird weather. Has the Sahara dust storm been noticeable to you?

Seriously: respect for the service.

Oh, I'm in the US Navy, lol. We went on deployment and the world went to shit.

I initially thought you were sailing as well, i may actually abandon land and do that myself for awhile....just concerned a bit with the complications of sailing and small boats tend to break down a lot.

Is there nowhere for the ship to land for a few days just to get feet grounded for awhile?

What kinda food are you eating?? How do u get fresh fruit and veggies ? U guys don't have DVDs and video games u can play?
Uh, regular stuff. Tonight I had grilled chicken, cheese potatoes, mixed veggies, and a salad. There are supply ships that we link up with and use helicopters to bring supplies over.

I do have stuff, but since there is no way to get online, only physical media or like everyone just passes around HDDs copying movies and TV and shit.

Don't worry sister. Soon.

Yeah in like 2 or 3 months.

Well, it's always about the right perspective. Some ppl are stuck on strategic submarines, and some of them having finger hovering around BIG RED BUTTON 24/7. So yeah, enjoy the sun and fresh air and staying safe from covid.

I'm a Fire Controlman, I stand Defense Weapons Coordinator and Combat Systems Readiness Officer. I am responsible for launching ordnance too. But I much prefer this to being underwater. I couldn't be an FT(the submarine version of my rate).
Destroyers aren't that bad from what I've been told since they're typically ran with smaller crews and you are able to have moments of privacy more then on big ships. I've known some people that hated being on aircraft carrier but enjoyed being stationed on a destroyer.

yeah, I was on a Cruiser earlier in my career and it is much better. You don;t have the amenities we do on a carrier and there is a lot more work, but the crew is a lot tighter and you have way less dumb shit to worry about. Way fewer junior sailors cupcaking around with each other and shit.

No, we're east of Africa
Poor gigolos, always forgotten. Women like dick too ya know.

Yeah, but not weird dick you have to pay for.

Ships in the Pacific are allowed in to Guam but for us out here in the North Arabian Gulf/Gulf of Oman/Indian ocean/mediterranean Areas, we aren't allowed anywhere, nowhere has been deemed safe enough
how's morale?

Terrible, everyone is sick of each other and almost six months of nonstop work is getting very draining. plus there is the drama back home that has everyone worried about their families and stuff
Should have a fantastic tan at least?
I burn a lot, if that counts, lol

What do you do to pass the time OP?
Slightly envious, being away from everything sounds like quite the trip!

Well, I've read 21 volumes of My hero Academia, 82 volumes of one piece, watched all of Westworld, Watchmen and The Boys and am currenty working my way through JoJo. Finished Daemon X Machina and Wolfenstein Youngblood for Switch. Playing Ys origins, Super Robot Wars T and SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays.

Thanks for helping me stay sane GAF

thank you for your service. I've only been on the ocean for a week on a cruise ship before and I can barely take it, so you have my respect and condolence for staying out there for so long.

also, if it's not some top secret thing would you mind telling me how you read the manga and watch the shows and play games? did you bring your own devices ie tablet/console etc or do you use shared public ones? how's the connection using them out in the middle of the ocean? I've always been curious about these things

I downloaded a bunch of stuff before we got underway and I read the manga and stuff on my phone. I have my laptop and an external HDD to watch everything, everyone just kinda trades all of their drives and copies each other's content for new stuff. I brought my Switch and XBox One X underway with me for games.

MWR(morale, welfare and recreation) have consoles too. Like we have gaming nights, like there is a shipboard FGC that meets on Mondays, they do Smash and mario Kart and Madden and FIFA and NBA 2K tournaments. They also have Games, DVDs and Blu Rays and even board games and cards and dice and stuff we can check out.

There is no connection however. We have no way of hooking up our personal devices to the internet.

It's actually led to some weird shit. Like a lot of people only had like Spotify and Apple Music and streaming stuff, so after 30 days, all their music was gone. Android users not a big deal, but a lot of the iPhone users have no music app they can load now. So people are trading like screen recordings of playlists.

Hell, even me, I'm using fucking VLC as my main music player and it is terrible, but it's my only option.

that's fascinating. basically a totally different subculture that is born from the isolation. pretty cool stuff. I imagine the military are not all that strict on copyright issues, so that's good for the service man and woman.

also, how much do you guys hate the Village People song "In the Navy" and how well can you cuss at people (cursing like a sailor) :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Some forums allow people to upload small files with their posts. If GAF had that feature, we could've sent a few songs OP's way.

My work PC is a DoD network connected asset. That would never be possible and I would get in assload of trouble for even trying as that would be a huge opsec violation.

You guys need to convince a charity to airlift a satellite link to the ship... ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Our EM profile is very strictly controlled. Dropping a whole ass new sensor would upset that, never mind the fact that a commercial product would probably be incapable of handling the EMI from all of the sensors we have onboard.

Plus there is the whole issue of whether we would even have a good shot with a satellite where we are and as we cross the globe, we would lose the footprint and who knows if we would be able to reestablish.

I've been out to sea since January 17th, not allowed to pull into any ports due to COVID. If it weren't for Amazon and GNC, I would begin to doubt land even existed anymore. It's hot as fuck out here on the open ocean and so very boring. See the world they say, but they don't say the world is mostly water.
Have you seen Mermaids yet?

Should've been a Seabee mate. We've been deployed for almost 300 days now. COVID really fucked everybody that works in the DOD if they were deployed.

You guys' advancement is fucking terrible though since they shut those batallions down.

Earlier in my career, I did C-RAM(Counter Rocket Artillery and Mortar) in Iraq, those deployments were a full year in theater plus training, but like amenity wise it was better, even if I was in a lot more danger. But having my own chu with my TV, my Xbox, my laptop able to get online and stuff, plus DFAC food is way better than Navy galleys. I miss that a lot. Especially the immediacy of seeing my guns going off knocking shit out of the sky.

I mean, we have to fucking pay for Rip-Its here ffs.

I never pay attention to advancement. All I know is we got 8 year chiefs out here so it can't be no HM advancement rate lol.

Honestly since that frag order came out being stateside is still going to be fairly rough. Nothing to what you sea boys have to deal with but it definitely isn't party time back home either.

Figured Rip-its would be mandatory rations. They doing you guys dirty out there.

My friend is in a submarine for months at a time. He told me a crazy story about how he thought it was basically over one time. The submarine had an issue or something and he thought he was going to die. Said he even thought about his gun (didn’t know they could bring them in the sub) and pulling the trigger if worst came to worst. I think he said it was that or implode basically, the submarine implodes and everything is underwater at that point. He said that’s the last way he’d want to go. Fucking nuts hearing that story. Imagine having to choose between quick death or panicking and not pulling the trigger and you end up drowning for several minutes. Such a fucked situation

Submarines and tanks are very cool machines. When you think about them from a outside perspective.
