MS Discusses the 'Optimized for Xbox Series X' Badge: "performance target of 60 frames per second at 4K resolution"

Dirt 5 is not an indie, and its confirmed 120.

On Xbox Series X, Dirt 5 will support numerous different modes including a 4K 60fps mode and an optional 120fps mode on the next gen machine. For fans of split-screen multiplayer, the game’s Xbox Series X version will benefit from a full four-player split-screen play.

if 16:9 is maintained: SOLO 4K60
4x local CO-OP 4K120Hz (each window running at FHD30fps)
4x local CO-OP 8K240Hz (each window running at 4K60fps) which won´t be the case
2x local CO-OP 4K120Hz (each window running at FHD60fps with black bars top, bottom)

I just dont see how they can do that on modern titles if the ps5 can mostly hit 30fps at 4k.
Its not like xsx has twice the cpu power and twice the ram.

I say yes the cross gen titles will have 4k 60 even 4k 120. But no nextgen title will have it all.

I am fully prepared for 4k 30 for next gen.
I mean ac valhala is already 4k 30 on xsx and its cross gen

It entirely has to do with how much is being drawn on screen. PS5 will have games at 4k 60 as well. Games at 4k 30 or 1440 30 will "look" a lot better than the 4k 60 games, at least in terms of visual complexity. That's what is so funny about all this 4k 60 talk about XSX, like it's an automatic switch and it just dominates over everything else. It doesn't. It's quite close in the graphics and cpu department. XSX does have the advantage. But it's the smallest delta since ... maybe ever? I can't think of two systems so close. They are way closer than PS4 and XOne were in the graphics department. PS3 and 360 were pretty different. And of course PS2 vs Xbox wasn't really a fair comparison because of when they launched. Even SNES and Genesis feel fairly far apart in 2D terms compared to what's coming.

They are all going to be great consoles that produce great visuals. What will matter is how fun the software is. It seems like so many are forgetting that the key aspect of all of this is "fun". Well, we know Neil Druckmann did at least.

Good, even if not achieved on every game, at least MS is drumming in 60fps, into peoples expectations, unlike sony 30fps will be ok......not really in 2020 tbh sony

And why is 'I can play on pc anyway' irrelevant? It's a valid point, and will reduce hardware sales

This is full-on PC territory.. Only two true consoles left now, Nintendo and Sony.
A prime example of why I lean towards console generations rather than this ever-evolving platform; More confusion and uncertainty to the point where they have to come up with a program to reassure consumers they'll get their money's worth. All I'm seeing are games hamstrung by legacy hardware that will never live up to their full potential.

Edit:
This is also a confirmation from MS that the Series S exists, 'cause they would never launch this kind of program only for the interim timeframe while the One S and One X are viable options.

It's just a different model that's all. I'm glad they are going that way because it's about time Xbox stops trying to be Playstation and accepts what the brand was supposed to be in the first place, which is PC-Lite.

Thanks Mark

You not got a tub running?

"optimized for..." sounds like:

yeah, this game is made for some weaker platform, so we just pump up the res and maybe add something really minor, but that is it!

"made for..." would sound like that game is really made to take all the systems perf into account.

Maybe devs just be lazy or dont have the resources to make epic game for xSex and downgrade it, so they just make it for slow PCs/series S/one and optimize aka add more res to it

Yeah, this definitely sounds like another bullshit I heard

I can't wait until the July event so people can stop being so "concerned" about games "being held back". It's such a lame and tired fanboy play at this point.

Lots of talk and expectations.

Reality
AC Valhalla 4K30 on both consoles
Destiny 4k60 on both consoles.

Whats next up ?

The problem is that people expect that "optimized for XSX" means 4K/60, RT, HDR etc etc...but that not true. Valhalla can have 60fps support on both platforms with lower res for sure. It's the same as all games after june need to have "native" support for PS5.

Great start but how is AC: Valhalla on that list? Isn't it confirmed to be 30fps? Will it be 60FPS on the XsX?

Yeah, AC:V is a bad indicator for the "targeting 60FPS" part, like, the devs will just unlock the framerate, it'll go up to 40-45, and they'll be like "hey, we tried!", so so much for the "optimized for"... But still, thanks to VRR it would be way more enjoyable experience than locked 30, so I'd say unlock the framerate for all games please. But anyway, the game is already confirmed to be running at 30FPS on PS5, so I simply don't believe such a major AAA multi-platform title will be running at 60 on XBX, not only because of the sake of parity, but simply because the specs don't indicate nowhere near such a dramatic difference.

The only two scenarios I can see for the XBX version to be 60FPS instead of 30 on PS5 is A) the game runs at dynamic resolution instead of native 4K, but if so, then it would've been as well used on PS5, right? Or B) AC games are known to be heavily CPU bound, which would mean the PS5 CPU will be running at its max all the time, taking away some power from the GPU, plus VRS tier 2 in XBX would boost the difference even further. But that still doesn't add up to make a 100% difference in the framerate... So I don't know, it's most likely an exception on the list that will be 30FPS, but will use other XBX features no available on the current-gen consoles, hence the "optimized for" badge.

MS marketing trying to create a good thing out of a bad thing. Impressive. What will they do once all their titles aren't cross gen? Remove the "Optimized for Series X" badge?
I think they'll be using it as advertising throughout the gen.

I think Sony will have a harder time having as many titles hit 4k60. So, for what it's worth, they'll use that. I hear Microsoft's July showcase chatter will lean heavily on games hitting 60 &120 fps (per DF, many of Sonys games at their recent showcase were at 30fps).

Selfishly plays on Xbox Purr-ies X
Call of the Sea looks really nice.

It's set in the 1930's on an island in the South Pacific.

Made by Out of the Blue Games. (indie developer).
https://outbluegames.com/

from their website:

Out of the Blue is an independent game development studio composed of 12 veteran game developers based in Spain, Greece and the USA who have individually worked on titles including Red Matter, Metroid Samus Returns, Deadlight, Gylt, Celeste, Guacamelee 2 and Space Lords.

This is their first game.

Game Engine: Unreal Engine 4

Publisher is Raw Fury.
https://rawfury.com/games/

Trailer on Youtube has a badge at the end that says: "Optimized for Series X". Good branding, and trailer is in 4K/60:

Here is some more info on the Xbox optimizations: https://bit.ly/3eNxooP

Should look really beautiful at 4k/60. Like a painting.

No news yet that it will be coming out on PS4/5.

Also coming out on PC.

I really love the look and feel of the 30s nostalgia of this game, I just hope the game itself is good and fun to play

In terms of marketing, I think they'll have trouble with the optimized for tag if they show up with a bunch of games that look at home on Xbox One but in a higher resolution and framerate.

It's difficult to convey exactly what is so great about it, especially given how few users can take advantage of 120 fps.

Some of Sony's games might be 30 fps, but the difference is quite noticeable in the actual image on screen.

This will NEVER happen, because it's stupid to force it on devs.

Forcing the devs to make fast, precise, responsive controls instead of sluggish, floaty ones would be the greatest move ever made in console gaming. But I don't think I'll live long enough to ever witness 60FPS being maybe not standard, but at least dominant framerate.

Million of people can't "FEEL" the sluggish/floaty controls in 30fps games. Me being one of them.

Is ps5 considered pc-lite, now that they have done the exact same thing as Xbox? Almost as if they copied them, especially with the whole generations talk going on over the past few months.

that's called being a casual gamer. yes you guys are now the majority sadly

I've played videogames for the last 30 years as a hobby. I've probably spent $10K on videogames over that time. How am I a casual gamer?
