4K TV for nextgen questions

Like I said before, if you want HDR you're pissing your money away on something that doesn't at least HAVE local dimming (that's the most important part! not 500 vs 1000 nits). Secondly, you can't go by reviews that are done on 55" TVs or above for Samsung under 55" because those smaller ones all get worse panels & processing but they don't get reviewed. The only reason we know the difference is because of consumer testing (aka buy & get burned). Feel free to scour AVSForums & AVForums.

Waiting is good, because you will see huge drops in prices for black friday (i.e. what the TVs should be priced at in the first place). Never ever buy a TV before black friday unless it's last year's model and it's already discounted.
Yeah, I started reading again from the beginning and seems that my best "budget" option is the one you recommended:
Sony Bravia KD-55XF9005B

This seems to have proper HDR with a reasonable price, although much more than I wanted to spend, but this seems to be the best price/value option, isn't it? Only better options would be OLEDs that are even more expensive. Problem is that I worry that this won't be in stock in the Autumn but I don't have the money for it currently.

isn't it the opposite? HUDs for heavy gaming or sports could cause burn in. Also the auto brightness limiting could be notable on some sports like ice hockey.

While oleds are perfect for movies.
Sony has OLEDs too. They're the reference for displaying when the creators intended. :lollipop_grinning:

Modern OLEDs will dim the brightness of static icons after a while.

Guys all in all, should l go for the SONY or LG OLED ?

I would say only one Sony model for HDMI 2.1 which is X900H if you play for so long periods and don't want judder at 24-30fps like in C9/CX. You won't get the perfect blacks of the OLED, but you'll still get the most accurate color, upscaling, motion at a budget price.

C9 and CX or even B9 and BX (does that exist?) are all amazing as well, but you need to pick your poison according to your flavor, every tv has its flaws, and I think Sony X900H fits most gamers with no brun-in concerns or wacky brightness control over your content to protect the screen from burn-in.

You won't been the overall image beauty of an OLED, but the judder with 30fps will be pretty annoying in the long run. Even without the 240Hz motion control in Sony or turn off, motion is handled better from my own experience and friends I know who tried OLED vs LCD.

My best advice is wait for PS5/XSX release first and see direct reviews with them plugged in your preferred TV, and we have plenty around this thread listed with C9/CX/X900H that would give you their own feedback, listed at the bottom of the OP to make it easy to track:

That's a wonderful video, thanks for sharing. X900H starts at $999 for 55" if it's not listed, will watch it now.

They're actually better than LG OLED in terms of picture, color, motion although using an LG panel. But won't recommend them for gaming as they're pretty expensive and lack HDMI 2.1.

For most people waiting to see CES 2021 and then either buy a 2020 model at a very good discounted price or wait for the newer models with HDMI 2.1 could but the perfect timing. As that guy says, stop the FOMO.

I think you will be happy with that, but for how much did you find it? As it's just an earlier model from the same lineup as X900H but one year older. I would say it's better to wait for the later to get some discounts months for now, no need to rush as next gen consoles haven't been released yet.

Actually TV's do 12-bit with 4:4:4 as I read more about it here, and it's mostly in PC and video games:

SubsamplingVisual Impact
PC4:4:4Major
Movies4:2:0None
Video Games4:4:4Minor
Sports4:2:0None
TV Shows4:2:0None

And this is what they showed for comparison:

4:4:4

ju7100-text-chroma-4k-60hz-pc-mode-large.jpg

4:2:0

ju7100-text-chroma-4k-30hz-large.jpg

It actually effects PC usage quite noticeably.

But it's like producing JPG (8-bit) out of raw (12-bit), the JPG out of raw is massively superior than originally photographed photo at JPG, even if at the end both are shown in 8-bit.

Pretty much. Just gotta save up then. And who knows, maybe the newer models will drop to that price point too.

I've been looking at TVs for months. Probably gonna get an LG B9/BX. Not sure when I'll buy though.

OLED burn in is worrying but otherwise these TVs (inc. C9/CX) have everything you want. 4k, 120hz, vrr, HDMI 2.1, allm, etc and of course fantastic picture/hdr quality.

I suppose if you just take care to avoid burn in then the TV is a perfect choice....if you can afford it

I believe with the BX it only has two HDMI 2.1 out of the four ports vs all four ports of the B9 have HDMI 2.1

If you only use it for netflix and gaming and you usually don't game more than 8 hours straight a day and don't use the PC on it you're in the safe side. But it's better to get extended warranty just in case ;) Only performance issue would be motion at 24-30fps and judder, but maybe there is a way to add blur to make it less noticeable?

It starts around $1300 here. I'm in Europe.
But my prices include taxes too. Your $999 doesn't, I think?

It didn't even reach our market, lol. But we get them as expensive as yours there. I was gonna get a top of the range Sony if HDMI 2.1 was available on higher models. The 8K ones are just too expensive for me though, but was about to buy Samsung Q900R 65" for like $3900 then stopped when it seemed to have strange things with its not supporting Dolby Vision and not supporting HDMI 2.1 fully?

Then was about to get a 65" LG C9 and was pretty worried about burn in as I literally torture my TV's with up to 2 days non-stop in sometimes or slightly more in rare occasions. Along with the 24-30fps performance.

And that put me back to X900H, getting 65-85" but didn't make up my mind yet. Need to see it in front of me, but maybe 85" is too much if sitting only 2-3 meters away. :lollipop_downcast_sweat: But those guys are pushing me and there is another guy in that other thread getting his 85" too, haha!

Well, by the time I will be there to buy maybe I won't have better option than this either. I don't know... Problem is even $900 is much more than I wanted to spend. Originally I became excited when I saw that there are LG and Samsung 4K HdR TVs for $400-500 but then Neogaf made me realize that this is not so simple and if I want real HDR I need to spend more. And I want real HDR because I have been hearing that it's so great since the PS4 Pro reveal. I really don't know... I hope maybe I can find some "noname" cheaper TV that has decent HDR or something...

Just listen to experts on youtube, tv calibrators:

And many others out there. It's still too early, so it's better to wait around PS5 launch or slightly after that to get the best deal. I personally won't buy it now.

So I am thinking about buying a new TV for my future PS5 (and later XSX) and I have a couple of questions.

As far as I know when we are talking about resolution the most important aspect of the TV is its pixel density. This means I will get a clearer picture if the image I see has a higher PPI than I have currently. I have a 82 cm 1080p TV now which means I have 68 PPI if the game renders in 1080p. The problem is that the smallest 4K TV I found is 109 cm and that means at 1440p I also have only 68 PPI.
So this means if I play a PS4 game in PS4 pro mode on my PS5 that had a resolution of 1440p max, I will see no resolution benefit on this new 109 cm TV compared to my 82 cm TV in full HD. Am I right or am I missing something? I know that it might look better because of other aspects of the TV but I'm talking strictly about resolution here.
So as far as I can see buying this new 109 cm would only give me benefits regarding resolution if I play a game that has a resolution of 4K.

And if I'm right in the above, can anyone recommend me smaller 4K TVs that have all the features expected nowadays and has a good picture just like its larger brothers?
If you are buying it for next gen. I suggest you wait till the holidays to buy one. There will be new TV's out with the new HDMI spec. I think buying a 4K 120Hz TV or an 8K TV that does 8k 60Hz and also 4k 120Hz should be the best options to last you all of next gen.....HDR on the newer TV's will also be much better as well. GTS already support 10000 nits there, so expect TV's to hit the 5000-10000 Nits range...

I would get 8K by PS5 Pro with microLED that would do 4,000-10,000-nits and perfect blacks on LCD panels. Best tv tech.

It's 1,000 nits in 2019, but tech should be ready for common consumers by 2024-2025 with around 4,000-10,000-nits. The Z9G is already doing an eye-melting 4,000-nits, one of the most expensive tv's out there.

Here is probably their module screens doing 8K@120Hz HDR:

Yeah, that's the plan currently, I just hope I don't miss the one I'm eyeing with now, because that's last year's model (or 2018's?). I don't want to spend that much that is needed for HDMI 2.1 TVs as I don't care about 120 fps and I have no problem with screen tearing, as developers take care of that anyway.

I would still get Sony TV even if it lacks the hdmi 2.1. I dont think that it is so important for console games, maybe VRS helps vs judder but it aint that bad even on current gen 30fps games so maybe it is not so important in the end.

When buying Sony, quality is much better in my experience. just a small sample size, but everybody I know that have bought sony TV, even the cheap ones = none have broken, all working like new after 5-10 years. While people with LG/samsung have had many problems and broken tvs after few years.

I also happen to see local recycling place for electronics quite often, and most modern looking screens that are brought there as broken are LG/samsung, maybe they are more popular on overall but I dont even remember when I saw modern (5 years or newer) Sony at there

I know every manufacturer have bad screens and they can break up, but many have said that samsungs break easily, bad capasitors and other faulty components.

My oldest Sony TV is like 30-35 years old and still kicking, maybe that is their biggest fault = hard to buy new one when old one lasts forever :messenger_beaming:

I still use Sony kdl48-605b which is like 6-7 years old, 1080p screen. still nice picture and no problems, just getting this itch to upgrade the TV after ps5 is out.

Maybe that 48" A9 oled but it is bit small I think, or this xh90/x900h after it drops under 900-1000€, now it is just too expensive. like 1500-1800€ for 55" which is more than 2000$.

So EU consumers are screwed as usually, US price x2.

It's the same here, prices are usually higher here as well, but not always. We have another Sony 1080p tv at home been around more than 10 years and still performing pretty good. I'm upgrading out of luxury to X900H, then will upgrade again after 3-4 years when microLED hits the market. Quite happy with my current 2016 Sony DX70 HDR 4K, but not gonna rush for X900H and might get it after a price cut or with PS5 in one go.

I personally love how I didn't need to calibrate or fix a thing when connected my PC to it, and love the color accuracy for video/photo editing. X900H should be a decent upgrade as my current one has no dimming zones and it's not full array back lit.

You can always wait until like 2021 and get those 2020 models in a good deal, but I think those X900H will be a massive success for Sony for being the best bang for the buck for next gen consoles. Plus I love how Sony keeps updating my phones (a Sony phone user since 2005) and you get around 3 major updates! My 2016 TV is actually sitting at Android 9.0 last September update and it's actually fluid and fast. New models are system on chip (SoC) and more than 60% faster.

How do you buy a new plasma these days?
my opinion in the meantime is to buy a cheap Panasonic oled or cheapest sony oled, since theyr practically the same, you will have best motion(minimum blur without turning bfi on which dims and ruins picture) don't spend to much until the companies improve the oleds motion handling or come up with better motion technology ,speaking from someone who buys tvs every other year

If he is in the states he ain't buying a Pansonic since they are not sold here. Plus just because they use the same LG panels doesn't make them the same it is the processers that each company develops for their tvs that give you the difference in picture qaulity. Just like different game engines on the same console.

LG OLED if gaming is your primary focus. Sony OLED at the moment don't have HDMI 2.1 support nor VRR support while LG OLEDs do. Sony sets are better calibrated out of the box for movies.

Plus you get 4 HDMI 2.1 ports. Not sure on Sony's but Vizio lineup only has 2 HDMI 2.1 ports across all the tvs for 2021 one of the two is EARC so using a surround reciever your down to one HDMI 2.1 vs LG you have 3 available as HDMI 2 is the EARC port.

The picture is beautiful and it handles all content flawlessly

Yeah, it seem I finally have some idea what to buy, and it will be a good Sony led TV like this one, if they will still have it in stock. Or if not, will be hoping for a better price for the newer models. What I'm still not sure about is these codenames. There are a lot of different code names and I'm not sure about the difference it means. I don't want to "botch" my buy because of that.

Like I said before EU/NA have different codes for stuff. You only have to look at the first few numbers to know.

LG has B9, C9, E9.

B9 is their entry level, C9 midrange with a better processor E9 same as C9 but with decent speakers.

Samsung has a 6 series, 7 series and 8 series for LED and a similar naming structure on the Qled.

Vizio is letter based, just look at the first few digits and don’t worry about what follows after.

I actually don’t know what Sonys naming structure is based off. But you’d be looking at either KD or XF9 as the basis to make sure it’s the same model. 55 is the size and the rest doesn’t matter.

I don't understand how 4k is too much resolution for small screen.

Aren't we seeing 1440p phones with 6 inch dispay these days.

I myself have two 5 inch devices with 720p and 1080p displays. Difference between both displays is not too hard to spot.

Yup, and Sony Xperia flagships been 4K HDR for a while now. 16K is probably near the limit. 4K is only 8.5 megapixels, 1080p is freaking 2.1 MP! 8K is 33.2 MP.

It because they don’t have it or haven’t used it yet, and are trying to tell themselves they won’t see a difference.

Similar to VRR and other upgrades HDMI 2.1 brings.

Once they have it they won’t go back, but until they use it, it’s irrelevant or makes no difference. Same with how people worry about burn in on oled TVs but want OLED tablets and phones, where images are likely to stay static for longer.

But the difference between a 60inch 4k screen and 6 inch 4k screen on a phone is massive
My phone is 4k HDR and well... I can't really tell other then it a good screen
You'll always see a difference when resolution is higher
a 480p YouTube video looks good on 6 inch 4k screen
On 60 inch?
Not so much 😂
You missing out on a lot detail the smaller you go

But tablets/phones get black screens more often. OLED's are wonderful if you don't have 8 hours of constant viewing habits. MicroLED is the mother of all TV's anyway, and we need to wait another 3-5 years for it.

I have no info on Sony TVs. Use rtings.com for that info. I gave up on them when they started charging too much for inferior quality.

They aren’t the same quality as they were in the 80s and 90s and let too many makers pass them by.

They aren’t the same quality as they were in the 80s and 90s and let too many makers pass them by.
Hmm... well for me they seem to provide the best value/price based on the info I gathered here, they offer the cheapest option for good HDR as I found. And compared to my 10-year-old Samsung led, I imagine even the cheapest 4k tv would provide an enormous leap. Anyway, thanks for your help too!

And what's the difference between Sony XG9 and XF9? Which is the better and why?
X = Xperia
G/F = letter for that year, eg F = 2018, G = 2019, H = 2020 etc
8/9 = number for the model tier, 9 is better than 8 etc

The difference between (at 55") the XG9 and XF9 are minimal in the form of software updates & slight variation to panel manufacturing, but they are otherwise the same TV qualitatively (G is slightly brighter & slightly lower input lag).

R – TVs of the lower price segment and functionality.
W – mid-range televisions.
S, X – TVs premium level.

F - 2018 model
G - 2019 model

So both are Sony's Flagship LED models from the same series but different years
main difference is the XG9 has the X1 Ultimate processor from their Master Series
All of its HDMi ports are HDMi 2.0b
And has a higher peak brightness
And some other improvements
Oh and it comes with Sony premium brush metal remote vs the standard black one
Otherwise pretty identical

Great, thanks guys! So I can buy any of these two, depending on what they will have in stock at the end of the year, I won't regret it.

I think you better stick with XH90 and be safe. All high profile experts are highly recommending it for next gen, no need to downgrade for small saves. Just buy it like 3-5 months from now.

Believe me, I would if I had infinite money :) But here it is not even available yet, I think. And even the XF90 goes for around $900-950, which is double the amount I wanted to spend. I hope it will be available around $800 by the time I will be buying, but I will check XH90 too for sure, maybe there will be some good deals. At least now I'm glad that I know what to look for, thanks to you guys.

Fun fact: It's not available here neither :) But it if you have enough patience, buy it in early 2021 for better deals. The seller will make you feel that tv is your savior. Actually more tv's are coming so no need to rush ;) Good luck!

Thanks, to you too, mate! I'm just getting too excited about the idea of a PS5 + a good 4k hdr tv but I will try to delay the tv buying as late as possible :)
