Wow. How bad did that hurt? Pneumo? What kind of surgery are you having? Scary shit
The procedures really don't hurt at all. The most painful thing is the way your chest feels when one of your lungs has collapsed. You can't get a full breath of air at all, and trying to get one hurts. Only thing that feels good is hunching over. The extra air in the chest cavity moves around and causes discomfort on various organs, it's really hard to find a comfortable way to sit or lay down.
When you go in, you get an xray and if it's a collapse, you'll get the chest tube. Bit of freezing on the insertion spot right under your armpit, then they pierce the chest wall and snake a tube in there and get the chest vavle taped on you. When I did this like 15 years ago, the tube snaking part was brutal and I was screaming pretty loud about that lol. But now, the tubes are better or soemthing because after freezing, I didn't feel jack shit except the tiniest little piece through the chest wall, barely felt it. Pain from the air in the cavity immediately went away, 10 min later it was 80% reinflated. Taking that tube out sort of sucks, no local or anything and they basically say take a deep breath and hold it while we just pull 'er out lol. Thinking about it is worse though.
Tomorrow I'm having the surgery to put talc on the lung affixing it to the chest wall like I had on my other one 12 years ago,so these puppies are never going down again unless I'm stabbed or something lol. They go in with one snake camera tool and another that does the manipulating. You're out like a light so you don't feel shit. Wake up with a tube connecting your chest to the wall, they discharge you after certain criteria are met.
I moan like a little bitch about this stuff bigtime, I waited 3 days basically when I knew what it was and was sitting at home in pain. But ultimately once I'm in here it feels good. Nurses are fucking badass and some of the nicest professional people I've ever met, and it's not because they're trying to sell you something. There are bad apples out there somewhere, but so many of them just restore a bit of your faith in humanity when you deal with them.
