State of Decay 3 Reveal Trailer

Microsoft announced State of Decay 3 today during its Xbox Series X games showcase.

The original State of Decay came out in 2013, with a sequel following in 2018. The series focuses on surviving in a zombie-filled open world. State of Decay 2 attracted over 5 million players.

Shortly after the release of State of Decay 2, Microsoft bought developer Undead Labs. That was part of series of acquisitions to strengthen the Xbox brand’s first-party offerings. During the PlayStation 4/Xbox One era, Microsoft struggled to match Sony when it came to high-profile first-party exclusives like God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

The debut trailer for State of Decay 3 showed a woman alone, armed with a crossbow, encountering a moose zombie. Wouldn’t want to be her!

I just can't get excited for this knowing how long it took #2 to come out after the initial reveal. Any game that is so far out just has me thinking meh.

Also given the history of this franchise, it will be a solid 12+ months after release before it's even in a decent / stable state.

interesting. reminded me of TLOU a bit but without all the bullshit

It is not like TLOU at all.
It is survival game with base building. You search for survivors, loot etc and build bases. Do quests for other groups like you. Kind of what would TLOU look like if it was game instead of movie. It has also permadeath. So if your survivor gets into heated situation survivor can permanently die. IT is really great heartpumping game when you have 2-3 horders near you along with screamers and other special zombies and you just made sound while searching for something. IT can go from 0 to 11 in seconds and you end up screaming for Co-op buddies to come help you running away.

I really really really really really hope they will not bungle up launch like they did with SoD2. It is only recently years after release when they fixed netcode and people who play with you are not disconnected frequently + they added campaign.

State of Decay 2 after all the patches and DLC is one of the best games this gen, especially if you want to play with 2 other friends.

Also given the history of this franchise, it will be a solid 12+ months after release before it's even in a decent / stable state.

They only recently fixed all multiplayer issues. Now you can play co-op without single issue with rock solid connection.

Was that real-time? Looks incredible if so.

I didn't really like the first two games, but maybe this one is a bit more narrative focused?

First one was narrative focused but with good dose of sandbox. Second was more sandboxy but they added proper story driven campaign. So i guess 3rd one will feature one at release after SOD2 criticism.

Either way SOD2 was better story driven game than TLOU for me. Because stories in that game were yours and game has some kind of "theatre" going on where missions you receive are connected with each other.

So for example:

- you get mission to investigate where your survivor aunt vanished
- you do mission and find some enclave but no aunt
- later on you help that enclave
- then mission comes from that enclave that someone killed one of their members
- you search for clues and turns out that killer is actually aunt you were looking for and she has bad blood with enclave
- so you decide to help her and kill enclave or kill her or walk away

This is the kind of storytelling i love. Because it marriages player choice with character story.

After the shitshow that was 2, the franchise can only improve.

IT was trully shitshow at launch but they fixed everything and adressed every issue. SOD2 is legit one of the best games this gen.

Dev behin SOD is small studio that takes time. It took years from SOD 2 announcement till they released it and it was released in very bad state. It was only recently that everything was fixed and game started to shine like a star.

so you say now its time to go back to SOD 2 ?

Yes especially that it is in gamepass. If you are on PC you can get via gamepass for 1$
It is pretty amazing game now. Definitely one of the best sandbox-rpg games around this gen.

looks better than everything sony showed including the UE5 demo.

I seriously doubt this was gameplay graphics. SOD is smallish studio and none of their games ever shown any graphics muscle. SOD1 was ugly SOD2 is so so. It even says "cinematic trailer" so CGI.

Hopefully they can get better polish and graphics for 3 with Microsoft's money. 2 was a great game and i spent 100 hours in it, but it was ugly, laggy and bugged. But the gameplay was great and that matters most to me.

Did Days Gone get a cgi trailer?
Hmm, I think its reveal was presented as gameplay. But like, way more interesting gameplay than what we got.
I'm actually a huge fan of gritty zombie experiences. Comedic, light-hearted zombie games generally bore me, but I sure wish we got more quality gritty experiences.

Undead Labs abilities as an indie dev, to what they can do under MS is chalk and cheese.
Anyone thinking it wouldnt have a massive up tick in the graphics and in being bug free on release compared to what happened with SOD2 are just clowning.

A zombie game announced with a completely CG trailer that is not indicative in any way of the final game? This must be an industry first!

Both SOD games are amazing but the third one needs to be on the level of The Division at least. More typical rural maps would be boring. The whole "indie studio" excuse doesn't work anymore.

Yup, that's a loooong time away. Even 2023 feels optimistic, depending on how wide the scope is.

I do hope they skew more narrative than survival/base building/health maintaining, etc. It's cool how deep SOD2 got, it just wasnt my cup of tea.

Please God no.

9 out of every 10 games are (shitty) narrative driven titles. You don't need all of them to be! Leave the scraps for us! We're dying out here you pig!!

I remember after the first game i was really hyped for the second. The possibilities for what could be added to their original formula got me very excited. Waited ages, the second game finally came out. It was a very strong 'ok' from me. I recently went back to SOD2, it was fun. Nice to see all the bugs ironed out, but it still felt like an amazing framework to a game that should have had more depth.

I really hope they expand the scope of what State of Decay can become. Give more depth to the base building, the follower system, the procedural events scattered throughout.

I love 2, the gamey-ness I get from it. I just want a more TWD kind of experience where you let your communities grow, there are so many ways they can build on the survival elements it's insane.

And get rid of the Blood Plague... please. I was disappointed we didn't see footage, but this game has potential.

It's a video game... I loved its gamey-ness. Why not just simply add more narrative to the in-depth survival gameplay? The latter is what it's known for and all it needs, really, but there's room for improvement in a few ways.

Don't know why games keep trying to be movies, that ruins the game aspect... the interactivity. Rehashing Half-Life walking-and-talking segments just isn't doing it for me, I can grow attached to characters in just cutscenes or item hunting, thanks, devs...

Looks good but really, this will be priced at $60 when there are literally a 1,000 games just like from FTP-$20. AND the dev has not shown the chops to release a solid game.

I'm sceptical that's how the real game will look like. It's looks too good to be true, maybe even surpass hellblade 2 trailer.

Real time

Sorry no. Its just a cinematic trailer.
Please temper your expctations. Look at those state of decay games. they are not exactly eyecandy.

I really liked the gameplay for the most part. Just wish there would be more to do in terms of basebuilding and so on. Also Multiplayer needs major overhaul in my opinion. I would really like to play that with my buddys. Set up a settlement by scavaging supplys, make it selfsustainable then advance into more dangerous / new territories, some end game content.
I only played the 2nd Game when it released though. So i dunno if it got better with dlcs and stuff.

This is another game with no Xbox one version so I’m interested to see how they deal with this and how they build a game experience under Microsoft umbrella.

I'm a fan of both State of Decay games, even if their multiple systems can get stale long term in game. I hope they really lean into settlement building, not like a Minecraft or fallout 4 style, rather building up bases and possibly outposts with more discrete bonuses, population with better Ai at your base, maybe some customization of foot print and size based on your needs and material availability.

Finally finished my single player run through on RDR2, so I'm diving into Days Gone, and enjoying it's version of a post-apocalyptic zombie world. If there is a marriage of the type of gameplay between Days Gone and State of Decay with a persistent world, better tuned systems and a focus on the management of your camps kind of like a focused world building style game, where your choices continue to shape the world...then it will be a great iteration to the franchise.
