At the risk of annoying people with yet another poll on this subject, I figured it might be worthwhile to get another read on GAF's preferences, now that both Sony and Microsoft have had their big reveals.

The previous pattern has been for the preferences to hover around 2 to 1 in favor of PS5, but preferences have shifted rather significantly after some of the reveals, so it might be interesting to see if anything has shifted, now that both companies have had their major console reveals.

Previous polling (in terms of preference ratio, PS to Xbox):

Dec. 23, 2019 (before any spec reveals): 2.25 to 1 (657 votes)

March 19, 2020 (after both tech reveals, right after Cerny's talk): 1.54 to 1 (473 votes), big dip presumably attributable to initial backlash over Cerny's talk

March 30, 2020 (11 days later, after dust settled and some additional info came out about PS5 tech): 2.22 to 1 (513 votes), ratio rebounding to pre tech-reveal levels.

April 9, 2020 (10 days after that, nothing much had happened in the interim): 2 to 1 (578), with some different poll options.

[We don't have any good GAF poll after Sony's reveal in June, but before MS's reveal, so it's hard to gauge the impact of that event. There was a poll on 7/6, but I'm not including it here, because it was focused on the secondary issue of whether people were getting the digital editions, had very different poll options, and got only 1/4 the votes of these other polls, so it isn't comparable to these polls.]

Current poll, July 25, 2020 (after both companies have had their big console reveals, and specifically two days after the MS reveal): 3.35 to 1, with 668 votes.

XB first due to Halo's PvP. I loved H5's PvP so much.

Then PS5 after once a game I like hits.

OR, if Halo sucks I might upgrade my GPU first since the 3000 series is just around the corner.

PS5 and XSS (if real) or going to use Xcloud on Windows 10 for Game Pass instead (if not).

I will get the XSX down the line. After two years or so. Not because of its exclusives or anything like that. But it's the best way to preserve my Xbox game library that I collected through the years.

Pc gamer here, i'll probably get a ps5 for DS remake, before or after Elden Ring, it depends.

Same boat.

Getting the PS5 whenever Demon's releases. Hopefully there will be a black version of the console by the time it arrives. If bit I'll just get the white one and deal with it until a black one arrives and then I'll sell the white one.

Sad thing is, other than Flight Sim which is going to be PC exclusive for the foreseeable future, there's nothing else that I'm actually looking forward to from Microsoft that's arriving in the next 12 months or so.

It's not even a case of "I'll just play it on PC" anymore, the upcoming software quite simply isn't there from a first party perspective. The other stuff is years out.

I will probably be waiting a year or two before buying in. I really haven't seen anything that sells me on the need for a next-gen system at this point. I've got plenty left to play on my PS4 Pro, and there is the Switch after that.

Waiting a year or two will allow the new console to build up its library.

Xbox Series X = Day 1.

I'll get a PS5 Slim/Pro in 2023.

Y tho?

1. Xbox actually has more exclusives that interest me: Halo, Forza, Hellblade, Flight Sim, Avowed, State of Decay 3. On Playstation there is only Horizon 2 + Demons Souls Remake. Both of which, if I never played I wouldn't mind.

2. I'm giving up on PC gaming so I want the console with the most performance and that is no doubt gonna be XSX with the faster CPU/RAM/GPU. SSD doesn't matter really.

3. Gamepass. PS+/Now sucks in comparison

4. Better Backwards Compatability. Sure PS5 will play a lot of PS4 games too but Sony are not being clear about it and even then it's just PS4. Xbox has OG/360 games too.

And before anyone calls me an MS/Xbox Fanboy... I'm actually ditching Playstation after 25 years.

I would buy PS5 but I wouldn’t have anything to play, as things stand right now. Spiderman: Morales doesn’t do it for me. Still waiting for new CoD to be announced, if that happens at all (crazy year this is). What else good can we expect from 3rd party this autumn?

Already said that a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn & a Fable reboot would sell the systems to me. I'm getting both of those & much more, so yep, I'm getting both consoles. It's just a matter of when.

I'm thinking PS5 digital edition on or at release. Series X somewhere down the line.

PS5. Briefly considered an XSX when there was the talk of it being more powerful but MS showed the other day their 1st party is still a shit show.

still is more powerful tho. i wouldn't rule it out because of 343's incompetence. we've seen Flight Sim/Hellblade/Forza and they are easily the most impressive visuals yet. Not to mention any 3rd party stuff....

the only thing the XSX lacks compared to PS5 is SSD speeds which ultimately don't really make much of a difference. XSX has the fasters CPU/RAM/GPU which actually affects performance of games.

Ironically we haven't seen gameplay from two of the three games you mentioned

Where was flight sim at the latest conference?

I've been telling people for a while now, they are selling dreams as far as the console versions of flight sim goes. The PC requirements to have a good experience are no joke, and it's been that way throughout the beta.

All the other games you've mentioned are a while out and all we've seen are tech demos running on highly spec'd PC's.

Ironically if you're interested in Microsoft's first party stuff the PC is actually the platform where you can be most certain at the moment (provided you've got a decent machine), even the diabolical halo infinite demo was running on it.

We've not seen anything running on actual Series X hardware yet and we are ~4 months out from launch.

Nothing from the Xbox show convinced me that I need a XSX this year. I did like the look of Everwild the cutscenes look amazing but it's apparently still in concept stage

And Psychonauts looked great but that's multiplatform

PS5 for now, but maybe both. Probably both.

In reality, when I look at the games that I play, it's mainly third party. PS5 will have the better exclusives, but I think XSX may have the advantage in the third party performance.

Nothing in the first year, the launch stuff looks fairly shite and I already have high end PC. Once enough sony nonPC games accumulate, I will likely get PS5 like I got Pro.

I wanted to get PS5 at launch so I could play few PS4 games at 60fps but that was before I found out there are likely to be no PS5 games of interest in the first year.

Neither. All Xbox games are coming to pc and tbh they’re not even that great.
First year usually sucks anyway.
I don’t trust the first editions of ps5 not be loud either.

Going full on casual-trash-retiree with iPad Pro and gacha games (Epic Seven and whatever dethrones that glorious time-sucker). Will keep the X1X for gamepass and maybe replace it down the line if Everwild and Ascent are any good. There’s very little compelling content being offered on either platform for the first year, but multiplats might change that.
