Rumour: Dualsense lasts 10-12 hours

It has nothing to do with playing 10-12 hours in one sitting. Now you basically always have to plug in your controller after gaming, you can't forget it because otherwise you are much closer to a drained battery. If you forget you can go ahead and charge mid game playing with a cable of not even a meter long...

Also that's 10-12 hours at best. This means that over time the battery quality will go down and you'll eventually end up with 5-6 hours of battery life.
Eventually that will go down to only working when usb cord is attached.

So, why do people assume that we charge our controller after each gaming session ? When I'm done playing, I just turn off the system. I don't want to be bothered pluging in the controller and putting the console in rest mode.
How can people be happy with 10hr battery life is beyond me, that's just bad. 20hrs should be the bare minimum.

They can be charged though, much rather have this than outdated AA's that you have to pay a further cost for rechargeables or a fortune to replace them after each individual use. No thanks.
You buy rechargeable batteries that you replace after 3-4 years so you have your full 100% 30 hours of battery life. Instead of 6 hours

Correct the controller charges really quickly. I'm still struggling to see how people will have an issue with this unless they game for more than 10 hours a day or they forget to charge their controller.

If it was 2-3 hours I can see an issue but 10-12 hours with really fast charging?

Having to charge your batteries less often > having to charge your batteries more often.

Both from a convenience and degradation standpoint.

Lets put it this way, if Sony sold a DS5 that had a 40+ hour battery and cost $5 more, would you buy it? Because I am willing to bet you and everyone here pretending like battery life doesn't matter, would.

I used to prefer Xbox's swap out the batteries and keep going. So many people hated the battery life on the PS4 controller, but I prefer the dualshock to xbox's method. It's just so easy to plug them in and my PS3 controller is still working just fine. Sounds like Sony was able to move than double the battery life. Sounds pretty awesome.

Not an issue. After the wireless 360 pad and loving it all gen, I've now been forced to go back to wireless because the Elite controller has pretty noticeable lag when it's not wired. Not a dig, the Elite pad is the best pad ever made, ever.

Ok let's assume the DualSense has a battery life of 10 minutes.

Does it matter?

It's kind of silly to assume that I don't care about battery life. I just said that a 10-12 hour battery is good enough for me.

So let's stop fabricating what other people said and stick to the truth. I hate it when people falsify things to try and prove a point.

So you wouldn't pay the extra $5 for a DS5 with 4x the capacity if they were sitting side by side on the shelf? You would opt for the low capacity version? Heck lets make it a 1 dollar difference. Because apparently you have zero need for extra battery capacity, so any amount of money would just be a complete waste for you. Is that correct?

Realistically that isn't possible unless they reduce the features the Dual Sense has.

Im happy with the features the Dual Sense has and it's improved battery life over the DS4.

I'm glad that your not accusing me of not caring about battery life.

Don't most USB C devices come with quick charge e.g., plug for 5 minutes and get 5 hours of usage. This battery thing is a nonissue. If you're gaming for 10+ hours straight, you need to get a life and go outside.
Yep.

Most folk don't have that much time to game unless you're still a teenager living at home with your parents and have 0 responsibilities.

You have energy to sit there for hours at a time staring at a screen while mashing controller buttons but you don't have energy to simply plug in a cable into your controller?

Its a hypothetical example to prove a point. Because if you would pay the extra $1 then clearly you see some value in having battery life greater than 10 hours.

This is to help you understand why some people might value having battery life greater than 10 hours. As then you can simply answer your own question, by asking yourself why YOU would pay the extra $1.

Unless of course you are just being willfully obtuse, which is what I suspect you and most others are doing when claiming they can't possibly fathom why anyone would want more than 10 hours of battery life.

Well for people who game more than 10 hours in a day or who always forget to charge the controller I can see why they would need a longer battery life.

But 10-12 hours is enough for me and since the controller has quick charging it will charge to 80% in around 30 min.

I'm pretty sure you can agree with me that the majority of people will be fine with that battery life.

Also just being realistic here. If Sony increased the battery life 4x the controller would probably cost alot more. I can pay 60$ but 5$ extra isn't going to quadruple the battery life.

If Sony axed all those new features and substituted them with a larger battery I can see the battery life being much better. But I like the haptic feedback and the resistive triggers.

Sony has less than a 3rd of the battery life of the competition. It doesn't take an astroturfer to point out that this is disappointing. No one has to downplay anything or exaggerate.

Do you think it's an accident that they didn't mention the battery life officially even once during their entire press conference dedicated to the controller? Even now, we still only know about it from a leak.

Sure, just like the majority of people would be "fine" gaming on an old 720p tv. But I am trying to help you understand why despite a 720p tv being perfectly usable, most people still want a 4k OLED TV. Which seems to be what you are having difficulty understanding.

MOST people want things that are better than "fine".

Pretty sure we will get that information from Sony at some point. All we heard from Sony is that it's better than the DS4.

With that said comparing the controller to the competitions you can see that it's more feature rich. Even if the controller has a big battery those features can still drain it pretty quickly.

With that if this rumor is true doubling the battery life shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. Maybe it's not enough for some people but it will be for most people.

What about the features don't those count as well?

You have to take into account that it isn't just a DS4 with double the battery life. Some people are looking forward to the new design and features.

I understand you perfectly though. But I'm not going to not buy a PS5 just because the controller doesn't have a 30 hour battery life. That's something you have to understand.

I don't have an Xbox, but don't they have haptic triggers already? The battery life is better.

Joycons, even with their extremely compact size, have gyro, improved rumble, and an IR camera and still last twice as long as the DS5.

How is it more features rich?

Haptic triggers =\= to resistive triggers.

Haptic triggers is just rumble in the triggers while resistive triggers are triggers that can become harder or easier to pull depending on what's programmed for them.

Not to mention there's the track pad, haptic feedback (more advanced than just your basic rumble), speaker and dual microphone system.

Unfortunately those features (especially the track pad) tend to drain the battery quicker.

Edit: For comparison sake the DS3 has a 30 hour battery life and the DS4 has a 4-6 hour battery life.

I think it's obvious that Sony chose to sacrifice battery life to add those features. Thankfully the battery life in the DualSense is better with those additional features.

So I only need to charge it every other day instead of every day. That’s an improvement I guess?

still a farcry from my xbox/switch controllers lasting nearly a week before needing a charge/battery replacement.

Has there ever been a breakdown of why PS controllers seem to drain like crazy while Xbox has pretty shockingly strong battery life? Everybody blamed it on the LED, but that's just a strip of LEDs, it shouldn't knock much time off the battery life. And they both have rumble. The trackpad is an issue on PlayStation, that does seem like a weak point for consuption, otherwise, I'm not sure what the difference would be. I believe PS3 did some dumb stuff about keeping a connection open even when the console was off and so the battery drained (like I remember something about the controller would maybe pop on when the system ran auto-updates and so the controller would be on for an extra hour a day when I wasn't home just idling while it downloaded patches, something like that.) 10-12 hours for a controller doesn't seem unreasonable (it's enough for even a marathon play session, and you can always supplement it with a battery pack), but I'm confused why MS would have an advantage time and again.

(I don't have an Xbox, I read good and bad things about Xbox One battery life but Omeggos' post about Xbox One and especially Xbox 360 being just easy on batteries seems typical.)

BTW, a stock rechargeable Xbox battery is 1400mAh, whereas the PS4 one is 1000mAh; if you're handy (and it's not too hard, you don't even need to solder the connections,) you can swap in a 2200mAh pack on your PS4.

No I think it's you who is missing the point here. You're not willing or open to understand that some people are okay with 10-12 hours of battery life. If they got more of it, they won't complain but as he already pointed out, he's okay with the battery life that it does have along with the new features the controller is introducing. More battery life is never bad and he didn't say it is bad. That's been your take on it.

I honestly think it's all the features that they've added.

With the Dualshock 3 I always had around a 30 hour battery life with it. Then when they started to add all those features the battery life started to decrease by alot.

I'm curious to know how they managed to improve the battery life in the DualSense since it has more features than the DS4.

You're not willing or open to understand that some people are okay with 10-12 hours of battery life.

I can understand why some people want a greater battery life but for me that's enough for one day of gaming. Heck I'll probably game alot less than 10 hours a day with the PS5 so I'll probably never end up running out of batteries. Plus I tend to charge my controllers often so it's less of an issue for me.

Even though I'm happy that they improved the battery life I'm more excited for the new features that the controller has. Im really curious to see how those resistive triggers are going to feel like.

I am specifically trying to help you, and others like you, understand why people might want a battery that lasts longer than 10 hours, even if they don't typically game for longer than 10 hours.

And who is looking forward to the new features? Blind gamers? I mean who needs haptic feedback or whatever unless they are blind? amirite?

10h is very low still, the cheap ass 25 bucks battery pack I have in my Xbox One controller last 10 to 12 hours and they are as cheap as it gets. that $25 price gives you 2 battery packs and a charging cradle for 2 controllers. so that's basically about 10 bucks per battery pack when we say the cradle+cable are $5

so this can't even compete with super low price batteries... like what?

But unfortunately for you I'm not those people.

Also you don't need to be blind to feel the new features. And even if you were blind I highly doubt you will be able to game very well. No idea why your drag the blind into a conversation about gaming.

I don't think you need to try very hard to make people understand that as they already do understand that. As for the new features? Well, look at the dual analog sticks, Atari/Nintendo added the sticks to controllers and Sony went ahead and added a second stick; during the PS1 era, it wasn't used for that many games and if it was used, gamers always had the option of using the d-pad to navigate the character and other menus (only Ape Escape and probably a few other games made it mandatory - where you needed a controller with the analog sticks) and look at how important the second stick is in gaming, it's pretty much a staple of controllers now. Don't discount new features just because you don't see the value in it. You also need to understand why people might want to experience new things with a controller, even if they traditionally haven't experienced or used it.

I could probably replace the battery in the DS4 as quickly as I would be fiddling with a couple of eneloops on an XBONE controller....

I'm sure we would all love to see you swap a DS4 battery in less than 10 seconds.

I expect a video of it by the end of the day.

And it's amazing how people are entirely missing the point of why 10 hour battery life is bad. Do they not realise that batteries experience wear and tear? More so when they need to be charged from a lower capacity more often? After 12 months of even moderate use your battery would be lasting only half as long as it did when new and these batteries aren't intended to be user replaceable. That results in throw away controllers or basically turning it into a wired controller.

Then there is the users screeching about AA batteries like these things don't exist and don't last 35-40 hours on a charge.

There are things to defend boys, 10 hour irreplaceable batteries isn't one of them.

Well if you game more than 10-12 hours a day and don't charge the controller I can see battery life being an issue.

I don't think you understand me at all.

With the DS4 I can definitely see a problem with the battery life but I don't see the same issue with the DualSense.

Honestly as long as you plug in the controller after gaming you should be fine. That wasn't the case with the DS4 for many people since it wouldn't last long while gaming.

I was being sarcastic, it was a joke. Obviously I understand why people want more than the bare minimum as dictated by necessity. I just had an entire conversation trying to explaint he concept to you regarding battery life. lol nevermind, I give up.

I understood everything you said. But I prefer those features over a 30 hour battery life.

That's just my preference.

There's no need to get angry about it because your completely entitled to have yours.

Even if so, getting more of it isn't going to be something they will push back on. Now, can you understand why OTHERS might be okay with a 10-12 hour battery (to help remind you -> unique features)?

Bad is a relative term given the variance in features between the two controllers that are being discussed and the associated battery life based on the features chosen by the manufacturers of those controllers. It is a balance after all. If Sony made the same exact controller as Xbox and it had a 10 hour battery life, then that's one thing. They haven't done that. Sony's prioritized different things than Microsoft has and has an integrated/rechargeable experience with their controllers. I don't think anyone here will complain if DualSense had a longer battery life, but the thing is, that a lot of you who are quick to paint this discussion as a fanboy defending thing, is that it also has features that are the reason for why it has that battery life. You can choose to be OKAY with that. I don't see why you're taking issue with it.

Sony gave us the specifications of the battery but they never told us it's battery life. The 4-6 hours that I said comes from my personal experience with the DS4.

However the claims of 10-12 hours isn't coming from Sony so the battery life could be around that if it's true.

From my experience whenever someone gives a figure like battery life it's usually under optimal conditions. I'm general expect less than what the manufacturer gives you.

The only thing from Sony is that it's better than the DS4 so expect more than 4-6 hours at the minimum.

In the end the leak could be false and it could be around 7-10 hours which would fit Sonys claim.

Hm, my only concern is they said it won’t work with PSVR. I can’t imagine that being true, unless PSVR2 won’t need the light for tracking.

In the end some people might want that 30 hour battery life and others will be happy with the new features and the current leaked battery life.

I'm more excited for the features than the improved battery life. However if someone wants to buy an XSX just because the controller lasts longer I would respect his decision.

Have you been in Xbox threads? This phenomenon is not a Sony exclusive!
Been this way since 2001 (Sony/Xbox). It goes back further for others.

10 hours and internal battery is positive news? I have PS4 this gen when it comes to console and like ds4 but have xbone slim controller for PC gaming.
I prefer asymmetrical sticks position on Xbox but prefer the surface of stick and triggers on PS4. But the battery is much better on xbone. Not only it lasts 40 hours, I can choose to use normal cheap aa or rechargables. It's just better and I don't even have Xbox one
