Bloomberg: PS5 official says PS5 event for this month is 'tentative' (Analyst expects $500/$400 price point)

An official at the PlayStation unit, who asked not to be identified because the plan is not yet public, said Sony’s next announcement regarding the PlayStation 5 is tentatively scheduled for this month. The company intends to release two versions of the console, one with a Blu-ray disc drive and one without, though it has yet to disclose the pricing for either model.

“I think the core of Sony PlayStation early-adopters will snap up the first several million units quickly,” said Macquarie Capital analyst Damian Thong. “With backward compatibility, their existing game library will work with the new console, so the new machine would be usable right away.”

Thong said he expects the standard PlayStation 5 unit would be priced at $500 and the disc drive-less version would be sold for $400. Altogether, he said, Sony would sell more than 6 million units of the PlayStation 5 consoles by the end of March next year.

It is interesting that the financial analyst community believe in 399/499. We will see - but they are more right than wrong when it comes to pricing.

Interesting.

So there's a chance of a PS5 specific event this month outside of state of play?

If there's not a single ps5 game present at state of play then I think we will have our answer.

Well honestly and realistically, it is expected and it would be weird if we don't have big PS5 event sometime this month. Next month is September and we'll be 2 months away from PS5 release. PS5 has been in production probably for almost 2 months already

damn that sucks that we might have to wait till September for the next PS5 event.

Edit: Nvm read it again sounds like it is most likely happening in August

If they are kinda settled on this $400/500 pricing structure, then what is the hold up? What could MS announce that would change it? I doubt they're going for a $599 XSX launch, so can we just get the damn preorders up already?

Late August - early September at the latest but because of current events they don’t want to commit to a date.

It could have everything to do with price competitiveness (with the Series X) or it could have nothing to do with price.

The hold up could be one of a million things. Given how little we've heard of next-gen launch software from publishers, I'm guessing this could be the real reason they (Sony) are still in a holding pattern. It would look reeeeally weird to open up PS5 pre-orders with only a handful of PS5 games available at launch. This could be the reason they're providing "An update" on third-party PS5 software this week.

Or maybe they're still unsure of how much of an impact COVID-19 will have on shipments? If they open up pre-orders for PS5 but you can't pre-order it in major countries (due to COVID-19) then there will absolutely be a shitstorm on social media, e.g. "Why can't I get a PS5 in my country, does Sony hate us?" Etc. We're in a time where requiring the PS5 controller to use the PS5 is being discussed as anti-consumer, so a company like Sony probably wants to avoid doing anything 'negative' that could actually gain traction on social media. And because nobody gives a fuck about how shipping works, they (Sony) won't be able to explain themselves out of the situation, so launch shipments could be another reason why they haven't announced pricing and opened up pre-orders.

Regardless of all of this, if the speculated price-points turn out to be true, both a $399.99 and a $499.99 PS5 will sell out within hours. They (Sony) are going to have to make a whole lot more PS5's a whole lot faster. Expect a lot of hot takes and conspiracy theories, e.g. "Are Sony deliberately holding back supply to drive demand?"

Sony have their good PR for this month. Spiderman deal and record breaking financial quarter. They're doing a SOP, not over hyping it so there won't be any backlash.

Xbox rapidly losing relevance. MS need to counter fast, assuming they even can. If MS do and they announce price and date, Sony will confirm an August event after them. If not they will tentively push it back for September.

Please understand

I can't think of any other set of prices that would make sense. Going above $500 is too risky and they likely need a $100 incentive for people to skip the disc drive.

Its almost got to be $500 and $400. Unless we're getting a $600 Xbox. I wish theyd just put the date and price out and then do a dive into the OS and such. Show some launch games and those sweet load times etc.

Its going to just be annoying soon if they dont start putting more info out. The thing is probably 14 weeks away at this point. I feel like theyre scared of something.

Uh, anywhere other then here I’ve seen nothing but disdain for the Spider-Man exclusive character.

How is Xbox losing relevance though? XBL is sitting on around 100,000,000 active members, 10 million and growing on Gamepass and it will only grow...

Not sure if we live in the same reality where both can co-exist and both be successful doing their own thing.

Must be awful ignorant to be a flaming fanboy all the time and just flat out make stuff up because you like the look of another device.

It’s like Ferrari vs Lamborghini. Both are amazing, both do their own thing and both exist although they serve the same purpose...

Did you look at the USA amazon pre order charts? The ps4 versions of the game have sky rocketed and Xbox versions of the marvel game nowhere to be seen. The mass market don't reflect angry xbox fans on hard-core Gamer forums.

I'm pretty sure that MAU number doesn't hold up to the PlayStation one. Pretty much all of PS comes through the console. PC has free xbox accounts and don't games like Minecraft on ps4 and switch count the players as active xbox players. In reality the console is losing massive relevance vs switch and ps4. Soon that will be ps5 too.

Would be a great price point for both console versions

I wouldn’t rule out component costs for a 4K drive. They still retail for up to $1000.
The retail price is what a customer is willing to pay, not what it is worth. This is why selling a console without a Blu Ray drive is harder than it seems. You are not saving much money by taking it out, but you are losing a lot of perceived value to the customer.

Why do you think supermarkets charge you extra for buying a bottle of soda that was already refrigerated, compared to the same bottle on the shelf at room temperature? The refrigiration added value that is worth way beyond the cost of the cooling for the person buying it.

Taking out the Blu Ray reader benefits only the Console maker, while the customer loses choice. So unless the maker of the Console is prepared to sweeten the deal by taking a larger loss, a console that is 100% digital only is not that desirable.

We are 4 months away from launch. Late august (around Gamescom) or early september are more than likely the last chances to stream the big final PS5 event. If nothing happens by then, I will start to believe in a delay.

I can’t believe people are this deluded honestly. Xbox literally just posted record profits lmao. Also love the fact that you base things solely on Amazon pre-orders lol.

Anything to further your own perception of reality I guess.

Its easy to underestimate how much more lucrative digital sales are to platform holders compared to physical. No manufacture or distribution costs, no retailer cut, no risk of cannibalization via gray market resale... Even assuming that the inclusion of the BD and associated licenses adds only $25 to cost, pulling back the remaining $75 is nothing over time.

With these consoles having so many cost pushing components and pushing things higher than ever, I was expecting worse than 399 for the DE. That's not bad, and 100USD difference would definitely push me to the digital.

The disc less version should have more TB imo, it would suck if they both hold the same amount. Anyways I’m gonna pick up the disc version at $500.

The fact Sony have 45m Plus subs surely means they'd be more willing to take a hit on the hardware until they can reduce costs at some point in the future, no?

carrefour agrees or has copied / pasted https://www.tomshardware.fr/carrefour-divulgue-les-tarifs-des-playstation-5-et-xbox-series-x/

edit:
looking at the preorder pages i feel sorry for xbox :

399 for series x vs ps5de?

Wow that's insane value if true.

Seems like Sony is getting a little carried away by pricing ps5 at $100 more than the stronger series x :messenger_downcast_sweat:

Theres something also tentatively this month. But dont hold your breath. MS are waiting on sony.

I just want Sony to open pre-orders ASAP so I can secure mine already. If MS reveals price and opens preorders tomorrow that’s fine by me, it will force Sony to do the same. I’m tired of the mexican standoff these two are playing.

The beauty of competition.

Well i dont know why they dont just allow for the preorders anyway. Its not as if people who already intend on buying it are suddenly not gonna buy it.

You would think so, but there are many factors to weigh, one of the foremost being the costs of production and operating expenses. Normally manufacturing costs decrease over time, but it depends on the components and the market demand overall. There’s a scenario where costs don’t drop for Sony in the short-to-mid term, so any extenuated period of losing money - particularly given the economic uncertainty - could really take a bite out of their margins, especially as the generation gets going.

MS might be more willing to stomach losses on hardware because it’s not something they truly care to sell in bulk amounts any longer. And the reasoning for doing so would solely be to expose Sony’s strategy as antiquated and inflexible.
