Digital Foundry has heard from their sources that PS5 will cost $500 + and may be all the way up to $700, same applies for Series X

I'm ready. I don't know if the mainstream is, but I'll pay for quality, absolutely.

It's hardly out of character for tech, when I'll probably buy an iPad this year for more, and have it last half, if not one third the usual console lifespan.

Series S would take on a whole new relevancy at those prices, though. That said, I'd be shocked if they went out of the $500 range.

Gotta keep in mind, they bullshit a lot and most of the time their "I heard.." is them just reading some REE thread and passing along the gossip. They don't know shit. The only people who have any idea of pricing on these products are strictly the highest-level execs at either Sony or MS, and that's not something DF (or any publication) will know about.

Right now the most credible info we have on pricing is the Bloomberg BOM article. What the price will actually end up being though, who knows.

A PS5 costs roughly $450 to manufacture. I'm not sure if this is with the controller. If it isn't then the $500+ makes sense.

Also I find it really funny how people are willing to spend $700+ on a phone every 2-3 years but nothing more for than $500 for a console that they'll change in 5-7 years.

Digital edition will be 499usd then.

No way they have everything out of mainstream budget.

I guess Sony could drop PS4 pro to 299 usd and keep going, since they don't have Lockhart.

Yeahhhh... No.

Isn't PS5 BOM around $480? Why do people think it would cost above $500? Even 500 is a stretch to play Spiderman and crossgen games at launch.

the longer the price are kept unknown the more you can believe smoke like that.

Unlike console they are not dedicated only to gaming and they are also important tools to be inserted in modern societies (for good and bad reasons)
you can't compare usage of them.

Everytime Microsoft have another shitshow with their launch the less Sony think to themselves they have to worry about what the Xbox will release at, so the PS5 price creeps up.

..and $700 is only a stupid price if there is a ready supply of morons willing to pay it, which unfortunately there is, as the PC GPU market proves.

I told yous the sleek controller, console hardware itself and internals (expensive cooling, SSD, architecture) is all going for a premium price category. There's even a silver PS logo on the controller that screams 'premium' compared to the plasticky design of PS4 (and not to mention the comparatively cheaper internals).

So minimum it appears, $499 for the cheapest SKU?

It's not comparable. A phone has more utility and socially carries some degree of fashion and status (even if misplaced).

A home console is a toy.

A perfectly functional phone can be had for a few hundred dollars, though. People go out of their way to spend that kind of money on luxury features that are very similar to the kind of fun-but-unnecessary appeal a console has.

I feel like the difference is that people mandatorily shove one into a monthly bill, and forget about the price tag.

Sounds like false information to me, does not make any sense when you compare that price to the BOM for the PS5.
I'm going to go with the standard:
PS5 w/disk: €500
PS5 digital: €400

BOM without the controller is $450. With controller it's somewhere around $480. Add all the additional gross cost (engineering, assembly, shipping, marketing...) and they'd have to sell it at $599 to break even.

I'm really surprised that console prices haven't doubled or tripled. Because what will gamers do, whats the alternative? Stop playing games? No chance of that they will moan for a bit and then pay the price.

because to shine in society phones are now also far more ostentatious consumption than console

Is 600$ considered expensive to average consumer in US? I don't want to sound condescending or whatnot, but imo it's not big of a deal when it comes to this pricetag. Especially when fucking phones can cost up to 1000$ nowadays...

People routinely get phones on a contract and so a large proportion of those people getting $1000 phones aren't paying that much upfront. Unless Microsoft really does go with some sort of subsidized model (ie sign up to 24 months of Gamepass), I cannot see them charging more than $499. Even $500 is too much - psychologically. That $1 is actually quite significant.

For some reason, and I don't say this with malice, it's just a statement of fact, consoles seem to have different pricing rules.

Buying a $600 or more iPad for your kid is totally kosher, but not a game console, for some reason.

Seems plausible.

With prices as low as 400-450 for the high end consoles - it would be hard to price the Series S. If its to close to 400 it would be to expensive for a 4FT console vs a 11-12TF console and if its to low - well it can be so low. It still has the same CPU as the Series X and so on.

I HOPE that the price for PS5/Series X will be closer to 400 but I expect that it will be closer to 600, perhaps closer to 500 for the disc less PS5.

Because almost no one pays the actual price for their phones.

10-50 bucks a month, including service, in most people's minds means their phone costs 10-50 bucks. It doesn't matter that it costs them more that way, it's still a small price tag they actually pay each time.

It's the same way that the average spent on Laptops/PC's is only around 600 dollars, and are never upgraded, despite the fact that they're vital for most work, that then leaves people with a machine that's bloody useless after a few years.

People don't like spending more than they have to, and there's certain barriers of price that yhe average consumer just won't go over for whatever reason.

For consoles, people have decided they're not worth over $500, so that's what manufacturers need to aim for.

So not going to be a massmarket product/priced, and it will take a long time to get people to switch to next gen.

Optimistic take, lol, and maybe you shouldn't take this too seriously.

>Don't announce the price forever. Start speculation swirling, and focus on the sheer value the console will provide
>Put rumors of $600 and $700 out there
>Announce $500, which everyone now sees as mainstream-friendly price

I watched this video, and it's just one moment where Jon says that he's heard from people that it could cost more than $500, potentially significantly more. It didn't sound very concrete and I don't know why Jon would have sources that Richard didn't have on that.

It's not about giving players choice, it's about the high cost of the main hardware. That's why there's a PS5 Digital Edition. That's why there's Xbox All Access and Xbox Series S. So they can go at $599 for launch.

Imo they are going to sell the digital only ps5 at a loss just because digital sales are much more profitable, and are the main source of income for games sold.

But Im no expert :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Also, people here failed to realise, that basic customers values their smartphone more, because they are using it almost non-stop, which is not case with consoles.

Smartphones are necessity (not high end, but you get the point), consoles are luxury. That's why people are more price sensitive when they are buying them...

Yeah but you can get almost the same utility from a device that's under $300. Society has placed some sort of intrinsic value (luxury) for certain brands and those brands can easily jack up the prices. I wouldn't be surprised if Playstation will try to lean into that. Just look at the box/controller.

Do we know these figures to be factual? I remember Bloomberg saying a long time ago prices in those ranges but I don’t even think they were confirmed and it seemed more speculation than fact.

Also yeah $700 is lunacy. $599 at most and even that’d be surprising.

Random side note:

It's kind of weird to me that history and the pop culture of the time has always recorded PS3 as a $599 system. There was a $499 model from launch, not gimped in the usual ways, that I believe just carried a smaller hard drive and less unnecessary ports?

Yet it's almost like that never existed.

That price was still bad, but not completely terrible compared to a $400 360 (the cheaper model at the time there had no hard drive and was a complete rip, requiring an expensive purchase later), and you were getting niceties like Wi-Fi and HDMI.
