Digital Foundry has heard from their sources that PS5 will cost $500 + and may be all the way up to $700, same applies for Series X

If they'll announce and charge 600-700, they can forget about mass adoption and huge sales number right at that instant. It'll take years for them to reach current PS5/XONE sales numberts (if at all). Also, who's going to buy much more inferior version of PS5/XSX to play next-gen games with subpar performance and at low screen resolution? It needs to be 500.... maybe 549 max. Moreover, the world is in deep shit right now economically and in any other ways possible, they can't seriously believe that millions of people will buy $600-700 next-gen console right now or in the next few years for that matter.

Imo they are going to sell the digital only ps5 at a loss just because digital sales are much more profitable, and are the main source of income for games sold.

But Im no expert :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Buying disc drive edition doesn't mean you are going to buy physical copies only. For example, I have (obviously) disc drive in my X1X, but I have no physical Xbox One games in my collection. All my Xbox One games are digital.

Disc drive is useful for me for both 4K blu-rays and playing BC 360 games though.

I.. think they'll be wrong.

But what do i know? Fuck all.

Now I'm gonna watch the video you posted to see if they backtrack on what they said about Infinite...

Edit: yeah, they let the other guy have more of a say. German dude's been chastised or summink.. in the first team video American* (*or Canadian?) dude was holding his tongue because German kept saying "I've got this video coming that answers everything, and it's all down to lighting".. but this time they let American* dude just list everything off. And German concurs with it all.

American* couldn't even stop himself "ugh"ing when German guy said he things xBox One X will still get it~ i think real xBox fans would gladly take a gimp'd Infinite if One X got a playable copy for a whole year before the real thing came out~

Can you picture them buying 500-549 console (which is $200-249 more than base PS4/XONE and inferior to PS5/XSX)? I don't. Also, you don't need 4K TV to play games on PS4 Pro / XONE X and you won't need one for PS5 / XSX, you can play next-gen games on a ''50-55 1080p TV just fine.

Yeah but you can get almost the same utility from a device that's under $300. Society has placed some sort of intrinsic value (luxury) for certain brands and those brands can easily jack up the prices. I wouldn't be surprised if Playstation will try to lean into that. Just look at the box/controller.

A home console can't attain the same social value and hasn't the same functional value. It has less utility and cannot be carried around like a status symbol like a phone can. A phone can serve a wide variety of uses including work and what has become essential day to day communication on the move whereas a home console is just a toy you go home to play with.

No way will I pay more than £400 for a series x or ps5.

Also if MS wants to get anywhere near Sony with regards to sales I would say the series x needs to be £50-£100 cheaper than the ps5.

Then they‘re fucked as we’re in a major recession. Nintendo will come out on top if they release anything in the next couple of years and Xbox will most likely fold.

Premise: DF cites no sources, and are commenting on general rumours about price being high, and throw out $600-700 as an outlandish number for the sake of discussion

We need to understand the limits of what one source would know AND to stop pretending that price is something that any one source could leak.
Consider the Series S, for example: that leaked, because devs were briefed on it and those devs talked to some insiders.
The MS/Sony event months were given to devs, who again talked to Grubb and others.

By comparison, price involves multiple departments, working worlwide, including people from marketing, finance, competition research, customer surveys, engineering and many more.
No one person is going to get all this info and leak it to the public.
Still, that info would still not be a fixed 399-499-599 price: it would be a series of agreeable price ranges, specific to each region, still to undergo further talks at many more levels of the company.

If you want to discuss prices, then use BoM estimates. Stop assuming the price is going to get announced on Grubb's twitter or in a DF video: we'll see it on stage, and not a second earlier.

That sounds like MSFT strategy with XBoneX. RRP of 500$ and few months in you could get it for 300$

That's BS., the thing with Kinect and two pack in games stayed at 500 for almost the first year, when they ditched Kinect then the price lowered but 300 iafter a few months, yeah show me proof.

[edit]My mistake, I see you're talking about Xbox One X, but then again 300 after a few months isn't true either.[/edit]

It's kind of weird to me that history and the pop culture of the time has always recorded PS3 as a $599 system. There was a $499 model from launch, not gimped in the usual ways, that I believe just carried a smaller hard drive and less unnecessary ports?

Yet it's almost like that never existed.
Because it never existed in Europe. We never had the 20GB model.
That price was still bad, but not completely terrible compared to a $400 360 (the cheaper model at the time there had no hard drive and was a complete rip, requiring an expensive purchase later), and you were getting niceties like Wi-Fi and HDMI.
And not only did we Europeans not have the 500 bucks version, we also had a gimped PS3. No Emotion Engine/PS2 BC. For 599€. Since the Euro was extremely strong back then, we not only paid a lot more for it, we also got a much worse product. I still believe that this is one of the main reasons why the console failed so bad here in Europe, at least around launch.

A PS5 costs roughly $450 to manufacture. I'm not sure if this is with the controller. If it isn't then the $500+ makes sense.

Also I find it really funny how people are willing to spend $700+ on a phone every 2-3 years but nothing more for than $500 for a console that they'll change in 5-7 years.

A smartphone has infinitely more utility and necessity than a games console, which is why people can justify the cost—which is often subsidized by the carrier to boot. You need a phone to be a functioning human. You don’t need a console to be part of society.

Well yeah, but nobody cares about Europe.

Interesting to find out. I do remember the BC. Was Europe the only territory that didn't have the cheaper model, or were there more?

It would explain why Xbox are releasing the S, and Sony with the digital version, that i would assume would be $50+ cheaper.
Although i still dont believe they will be more than $500.

I know right. Also that ‘get two jobs you lol’ is a deliberate misquote of ‘we hope people would want one so much they would work extra hours.‘ Which is a very japanese thing to say.

So many stories like that in every walk of life; politics, law, sports, etc. Humans prefer a good story that will get them self righteous froth over boring truth.

Yeah but as I explained earlier: Utility doesn't make sense in this equation. I can get 90%+ of the utility of a $1000 phone on a sub-$200 phone. The rest of the price captures status and the feeling of luxury. Also this is a phone you'll replace one or two times for the next 5-7 years.

I don't think you can get the same level of brand status like Apple but you can sell something unique to PS. The Playstation "culture" and first party offerings.

Yeah but you can get a phone for sub $200 and do all the same things. It's about the perception of the device, that's why people pay $1000 for a device they'll throw away in 2-3 years.

I care. :) My EuroAustralian launch model was Emotionless. Had software emulator instead. Run less than a half of PS2 games that run on launch US model. I paid $999 dolaroos for it. YLOD-ed 3 times, 3 times resurrected and now only used as an exhibit .

It sucks, but ot makes sense. Things cost money. And frankly, if you're willing to put down between 500 and 1000 for a new phone that's marginally better than the one you bought one or two years ago, it's silly to be upset about the price of consoles that will provide longer oasting value.

PAL regions didn't get the 20GB model. So Australia, Middle East, Africa
  • On March 23, 2007, the PlayStation 3 was launched in Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and New Zealand, with only a 60 GB model available.
  • On April 11, 2007, Sony discontinued the 20 GB PlayStation 3 model in North America, citing "lack of consumer demand."[2] It is widely speculated that the removal of the 20 GB model from the North American market was probably done in order to save manufacturing costs, as there is a difference in cost between the two aforementioned models of around $30.[citation needed]
  • In June 2007, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) president David Reeves stated that there were no plans for the 80 GB PlayStation 3 model to be released in the PAL regions, and that a 20 GB PS3 model for PAL regions is "highly unlikely".[3]

The 20GB model was apparently also discontinued after 6 month.

If PS5 /XBOX SX cost more than $800 dollaroos, I will not become an early adopter. I have a significant backlog of games on PS4/Xbox One that will last me until prices come down.

Are they testing the waters? I cannot imagine them going with price higher than $549 for PS5.

Yeah, but oh wait you can use physical on a console. And sell the game later on. Or exchange it. Or share it with someone. Or buy used. Or... oh wait, I think you get the idea...

I spend good money on phones every 2 years, i'm prepared to spend this amount for a console that lasts 7? years, too.

If they are a bit more expensive, this means alot if kids won't be able to afford them, makes it easier for me to pick one up at launch... I think they will both be 500 or so tho

The Bloomberg and the other estimators on price used the die costs from earlier RDNA and are just guesses.

RDNA2 on TSMC is using EUV on SOME critical layers, very expensive lithography and DUV on rest. It is more expensive than estimates. Die size for RDNA2 is very expensive component as are RAM prices,

Hence I expect ps5 500 minimum, XSX 550 minimum as it has a LIKELY bigger die nut we dont know by how much (same RAM amounts).

Lockart at 350 or 399 IMO. Its an expensive gen IMO

The 20GB model was apparently also discontinued after 6 month.

Later in that year though, it was replaced by a $100 cheaper model, and only dropped in the first place due to a lack of demand.

Which might explain a few things. The well of cheaper SKUs had been so thoroughly poisoned that not only did people not mention it, they also didn't buy it.

It's all a bit messy, but outside of PAL territories, it seems there were generally $499 (and eventually, less) options, that whole first year.

However, the PAL thing is bizarre, outright unfair, and certainly had to contribute to history remembering it as $599.

Phones are one time cost usually. Consoles require game purchases. I spent 400 on switch and in two years already spent 1000+ on games. If consoles become 1000 dollars thingy overall cost will be higher, it will leave less room in Budget for game purchases and diminish their own value with higher prices.

Everytime Microsoft have another shitshow with their launch the less Sony think to themselves they have to worry about what the Xbox will release at, so the PS5 price creeps up.

..and $700 is only a stupid price if there is a ready supply of morons willing to pay it, which unfortunately there is, as the PC GPU market proves.
GPUs, especially RTX series is really expensive to make, it's not really much of a nVidia tax...
