Apple removes Fortnite from app store after Epic launches new payment system (Update: removed from Google Play store too)

Good. Fuck Fortnite but I support this.
I’d laugh my arse off if Epic made an Epic Phone to grab all the kids that play this shit 😂

most kids playing on mobile are probably using there parents hand me downs. I don’t think most adults give 2 shits about fortnite and would actively wish for it’s demise at this point.

I don't get this shit, why is Epic, in first place, pushing a PAYMENT METHOD, which are: Hard to develop, hard to maintain, hard to keep secure, expensive as hell, etc, etc... Only to keep the same revenues in the end? I would understand it if they were pricing their digital goods the same so they'd get that extra fees they're paying to Apple, but they're not.
I...would disagree
Merchant Services just have a secured API you submit to these days, or other services you install and submit to that; making that to submit to your bank isn't hard even if they don't have a 3rd party merchant services. Banks already have the APIs the merchant services use
That way you can design whatever front end and all it's doing is submitting Account number, security, then the amount of funds requested

All the rest of the shit they ask in transactions isn't even needed; swiping a card at the gas station is the same exact info needed to be submitted for an online transaction to a merchant services :p

The financial market is no where near secure it needs to be in general, but that's another discussion
This is stupid or too dark for us to understand what's really going on... Everyone knows Apple and have other alternatives in the market, they're not a charity but business, they are not a monopoly because despite their success, 80% of marketshare is still Android devices.

This is different than social media, which are not only open to the public but also public spaces in their own, this is a brand that sell premium devices at high prices so saying they're "abusing their power" is just dumb if Epic is clearly evading their fees without an evident gain, unless they're pushing other game developers to use their payment method instead of Apple's and this is just the tick of the iceberg, which would gives more context but still just assumptions.
If you could spin a company being shit, have proof they have a shit ton of fines in other territories for stuff
And could make MORE money from it across ALL platforms because of precedent created from this?

They'd be able to smack Sony, Nintendo, Apple, Google, Microsoft, ANYONE they throw Fortnite on for better access/sales cuts rates; that's a SHIT ton of money

Hmmm...
Now that Google punted them off too, this makes a sturdy spot for Apple

Now they trifecta would be to have studios to hop on that

HOWEVER....Epic owns the Unreal engine, they may gauge back with changing their licensing to the same stuff
Imagine if studios are silent or go against Epic...hm....

I will tell you they're fucking party animals
But lawyers want dirt
Don't party with your company's lawyers
Well my company is mine, so I don't know. I living in a normal country and never actually have to used them againts someone else, so yeah. But they are ready, to get paid, let me tell you.

Do they actually want Apple to host the game and not get a cut? How mad are they?

Is this some China bullshittery? They actually want to break Apple and Google monopoly while creating one of their own with Tencent money? It looks like they were ready for lawsuit battles in advance and prepared a marketing plan for it.

What does this mean for Stadia? Can Epic basically say that if you want to work with UE, you can't release on Stadia?

My guess is that they want to bring Apple to the negotiating table for just reducing the cut? Of course, you always ask for more than you actually want.

I don't see why Apple and Google are seen as the bad guys here. They're allowing Epic to use their platforms to sell Fortnite and therefore deserve a cut; also, their cut is only less than half of the game's price, even when the game is sold with a 20% discount.

This is delicious. Die Fortnite, die! Bring back Unreal Tournament! Lol.

Really though, watching this unfold has been interesting. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

I don't like Epic's approach and i don't like Apple's walled garden as well, so what to do now?
...oh well, let them fight. I'll be getting the popcorns in the meantime. Whoever loses, we win.

Epic moves fast. It's almost like they saw this coming from a mile away.
Or that this was a stupid timed stunt and they knew what they were doing. The lawsuit is fucking 50 pages long and was filed immediately, this is all timed horseshit between two corporations with one actually gaming consumers to make it seem like they are on the consumers side. Epic is a fucking king of micro transactions, they are not concerned about consumers, they are concerned about making more money.

Good on Google for standing with Apple on this.

Epic actually tried to fuck Google when launching Fortnite on mobile too, it was exclusive to Epic Games Store on Android but no one cared and months later it came to Google Play Store. I'm glad Google didn't suddenly forget.

China isn't going to find it that easy to try and destroy American tech companies.

I wonder if Epic can even do anything. Is there any legal argument they could use?.
I don't particularly like Apple, and the closed "we know best" nature of iOS is one of the reasons I prefer Android. But I imagine the terms are clear, and no one forced them to release on iOS.

The only thing I could imagine is them maybe arguing there's an unfair treatment compared to other types of businesses like Amazon, Uber, McDonalds, etc which as far as I know don't have to pay 30% for purchases made through their iOS app.
I think Epic’s point is that iOS is too big to be just a choice. When you think about it, Apple has the monopoly on app distribution in more than a billion devices. This is a big deal.

Alright... Now we wait for MS and Sony to finish certification of the console versions of Fortnite with this new payment option.
I don't expect them to pass certification, nor do I think Epic even submitted such versions. But it's inevitable that Sony and MS will have to react in some way, maybe even publicly. This is going to have repercussions for both of them down the line, so they have to act. Even if it only involves calling Sweeney and tell the autistic bastard to pack it in.

Personally, had I been in Sony's shoes, I would stop honoring every cross platform feature in Fortnite, like purchases (vbucks, skins) crossplay & matchmaking.
They got essentially bullied into accepting this by an Epic lead Twitter storm. Do it as a warning shot across the bow.
Dropping a hammer on Epic like that would be freakin' hilarious with the recent Sony investment into Epic.

I don't see Epic having much of a case here. It would be like a manufacturer of a product placing two price stickers on their product in Apple's own store. Epic are free to sell outside of Apple but you're in their store, their rules. Imagine Coke trying to sell their drink at a cheaper price in the McDonald's drive though. Yeah, that ain't gonna fly.

It's a poor point. By the same logic Sony should open PS4 for Epic Store and Steam to sell PC games. By the way, Apple doesn't have a monopoly on the smartphone. You can buy an Android device or something else.

Consoles are not phones, my dude. Phones are everywhere and you don’t really have a choice other than Android or iOS. Just remember, this time is against Apple but Epic’s fight is also against Google and how they “scare” people on sideloading.

Again, iOS and Android have become something so big that it makes no sense to have these monopolies. Just like people would hate to only have the option of buying programs on the Windows Store.

Just gotta love Epic and Tim.

One of the few companies actually putting their money where it's of use, not letting it rot in company vaults and 'innovating' by putting out useless products with barely any upgrades for huge amounts of money, which people eat up like the monkeys they are.

So what does Epic want? Do they want Apple and Google to distribute the game for them free of charge and then not make money selling in-app purchases too? I am trying to understand the benefit for either app store to distribute it. Especially since customers will most likely be going to the customer service of the app store where it was downloaded seeking refunds, etc. It just seems like a liability at that point.

It's the same exact thing especially for Apple, who manufactures their own devices. Console market is split between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. A "monopoly" according to you.

Apple wants to pay less than 30%. All of this is a ploy so they can take it to court.
