Apple removes Fortnite from app store after Epic launches new payment system (Update: removed from Google Play store too)

On Android, epic could just launch their own store.

Apple, it's a closed ecosystem, everybody knows what they are getting into. They know apple controls everything on its own OS, it's Own CPU... It's a damn cult.

On the other side, Amazon, target, Uber, etc ... They don't have to give a cut of profits from purchases. Your purchasing physical goods with those apps. It's defined within the TOS about microtransactions.

Concidering nothing is stopping them from building a competing OS / hardware platform for phones.

They are throwing money around to win over the PC market, why stop short now, go on and release the under featured Mobile phone is, bankroll the mobile games while your at it.

Look at that. They're taking a page from Marxist playbook now.

Epic store gives me tons of free PC games so they ok in my book but still wrong here.

I'm sorry but Apple and Google are in the wrong here. When I buy a game from Best Buy I'm not continually paying them a fee because I initially purchased through them. If I purchase additional content elsewhere that's none of their concern. Netflix and Spoitfy fall in the same category. After the initial purchase there should be no more recurring payments to apple.
They choose to release their game on the store, they need to follow the stores rules. Nothing unfair about that. They tried doing it their own way on android and quickly found that being in the play store is worth the 30% cut. Now they’re just being greedy again.
Good on Apple and google for sticking to their guns here.

is the 30% cut too much? Probably, and maybe that’s what devs need to make noise about, but dodgily circumventing the rules isn’t the way to do it.

dunno what’s funnier the parody commercial or a company under tencent boot referencing 1984 lol

That's the best part, I don't have to.
If you were trying to make yourself look smart and/or funny you absolutely do lol.

You’re trying to equate a set payment fee to a power difference of 0.5TF being a bigger power difference than 2TF simply because it’s a bigger percentage difference between the respective consoles. That idiotic logic has been debunked already.

how about you leave the bullshit console warring out of this completely unrelated thread?

LOLWUT, it's a direct dig on Apples own legendary Mac advertising.

1984 is anything but Marxist lol. Read it.

I swear, all this electoral "evil communists under your bed" talks is driving ppl insane.
I've read 1984, don't worry.

This video is basically propaganda to encite hate against Apple. The company is portrayed as a some sort of tyrant that needs to defeated and Fortnite is the victim. And they're showing it in game to all the kids playing as some sort of weird call for action. It's as Marxist as it gets.

The original Macintosh commercial is not a call for action. It doesn't have the enemy. It uses 1984 as a metaphor. But Epic is using it straight up like as Big Brother talking inside Fortnite. Don't you see the irony?

they might win against Apple, but not against Google.

being banned from the Play Store is not equivalent to being banned from the Apple App Store.

if you get kicked off of the Play Store you can simply sell your games through one of the countless alternative app stores on Android or create your own
(which they already are planning to do anyway right? didn't they say they would make a mobile version of the Epic Store?)

if you get banned from the Apple Store you are also completely banned off of iOS and every iOS device.
this could be seen as someone holding a monopoly... maybe...

on Android tho they have no real argument since it is an open platform

Good on Epic for using its clout. Apple locking out too many things based on lies and their bottom line. Needs to change, including emulators.

Oh, I see the irony of 2 giant corps fighting and you are supporting a much, much bigger evil.

It's 2 capitalist companies fighting 4 the profits lol And yes, in 2020 Apple is the "big brother".

Neither advertising was against socialism, but both are against monopolism and total control.

And please, spare me the "think of the children talk". I want to remind you , that every corporation is using men, women and children in their market profiling and exploiting everyone's weaknesses.

So yeah, whatever man, if Epic's hordes of squeakers will squeak their way to victory over Apple I will applaud them.

It’s not a monopoly when you only have about 10% of the worldwide market share. Google are closer to a monopoly if you want to go that angle, with 90% market share.

Screw Epic. What an immature, shameless company.

Epic can go release their own phone, put their own store on it, and then we'll see how little of a cut they decide to take from purchases made on it.

Their endgame here is that they want the government to tell merchants how they have to run their stores.

The capitalist way to protest Apple's policies is to not buy an iPhone or use the App Store. Period. Trying to get the government to say that Apple can't have their own rules on their own store on their own device is absurd. Their ad with a rainbow Fortnite girl doing Tencent's bidding somehow overthrowing totalitarianism by symbolically taking down the App Store made me cringe.

I'm not a fan of Apple, but they deliver a product that people want. I don't see how that makes them evil.

Epic is using a popular children's game as a battering ram to eat out of Steam's market share and now to fund a lawsuit against Apple's "monopoly" over their own platform (what?). And this video is of extremely poor taste. It's not against "monopolism" or whatever. It's a rallying cry against Apple.

This just premiered in Fortnite, along with the #FreeFortnite hashtag.

This spoofs one of Apple's most famous commercials, making them the villain.

This is all absolutely insane.

Hilarious coming from a company majority own by China.
When do we get the Chinese version of that?

if tim sweeney believes the 30 % fees are exorbitant in the apple and google ecosystems , why didn't he pull fortnite from xbox and PS as well? they charge the same exact fees as well.
My guess is that they are not making much money with Fortnite mobile.

I have no stake in this at all, but man it's fun to watch these corporations tumble around in the mud like this.

I'll never understand if Gaf hates or likes Epic

I'll never figure out who this "Gaf" guy is. According to some people here, he contradicts himself all the time. Sometimes he's a hardcore Sony fanboy. Other times he's an Xbox fanboy.

Some days he loves Epic and other times he hates them and backs everything Steam does.

I'm not even sure what his thoughts are on Ford vs Chevy.

But at the same time this is damaging their case against Apple. They are saying they just want to be able to open their own store which they can do on Android but do the same shit their.
So clearly, what they are looking for it’s not to be able their own store.

epic should have just pulled the game themselves and say they would bring it back when until they renegotiated. Enough apps do this and apple will start to loose customers.

after switching to roku from Apple TV a few years ago becuase Apple wasn‘t getting the apps I wanted, I’m about to switch back becuase roku isn’t playing ball with peacock and hbo max while Apple is.

I’m really glad that epic is trying to fight this fight. I don’t mind apple’s walled garden eco-system in concept, but I do fee that a 30% cut is a bit much for the industry standard.

You have no understanding of the lawsuit or what is actually going on. Epic is far from shameless here. Remember how the iPad was "the future of computing" as told by Apple for so many years? So is iOS not .. a computing platform? Is Apple going to control "the future of computing" by saying what we can and cannot run?

It has nothing to do with a merchant and their own stores, it has to do with being the gatekeeper on general computing platforms, of which there are basically two players who are 50/50 in the US. There is no choice for users.

Go look at what software engineers are saying. Epic is a hero to them right now, and for good reason. It's not a battle of big corp. vs smaller corp. It's about the very ideals of software development and computing platforms and software freedom.

Of course Apple can have their own rules on their own store. That's not what this is about. This is about not being able to install whatever software you want on your own computer. Period.

Again. Read.

so why havent they removed it from the xbox and PS stores? Both charge 30 % dont they?

Because those are basically entertainment toys and not general computing platforms.

Should Microsoft be allowed to lock down Windows and ALL software that you run on it is chosen by Microsoft via its store? And before people start whining that "it's not the same thing!", yes it absolutely is at this point.

I really don’t think Apple or google are wrong, Is their eco system store...

btw Epic say item get cheaper but;
10 us item
3 us for store (Apple/google)
7 us for epic

Why not reduce the price on epic or ccp side? Tencent and China also get some cash $$

Fortnite is free to download, right? and so the only revenue Apple can make from allowing Fortnite on the store is those in-app purchases of V-bucks. The terms as they apply to everyone else are that you have to pay Apple a cut of that revenue, because you're making money by way of tapping into Apple's massive userbase.

If you are going to circumvent Apple's systems outright and pay them zero dollars then...

What is the incentive for Apple not to ban Fortnite?

- Do they need Fortnite to drive sales of iOS devices? NOPE.
- Other than in-app purchases, can they make money from Fortnite? NOPE.
- Is a statistically significant proportion of users going to stop using their iOS/sell their iOS because of this? NOPE.

Apple is doing this because allowing such a move would open up the floodgates for other developers to do the same.

Not saying I agree with Apple, it's just an obvious move to protect a significant portion of their business.

Get the feeling Epic is biting off more than it can chew here.
Apple has mammoth cash reserves and an extremely loyal fanbase that will buy their stuff regardless of whether Fortnite is or isn't on their device.
