In the first week of this month Switch sold around 3x times PS4 and 12x times Xbox one.
giphy.gif

They’re selling in inverse ratio of Tflops!

Maybe that’s Sony’s master plan for variable clocks - sales not where they need to be? Down clock until the system sells damn you!

Thanks. No problem.

As far as I can tell, the only other products that have traces of CELL's DNA are IBM's family of POWER CPUs -- starting with POWER7+...
PowerPC processors started much earlier, first developer by IBM, then jointly with Apple and Motorola. They were used in Macs and X360. They were better than Intel's x86 but couldn't break the Wintel monopoly because of lack of compatibility.

There was an interesting attempt at making both worlds meet (RISC and x86 compatibility). In 2000, a company called Transmeta had a Crusoe processor which could translate x86 (and not only) code to RISC on the fly. Unfortunately, they were too small to compete and got destroyed by Intel lawyers.

The Wintel monopoly seemed unbreakable for decades. Now we see that AMD is finally making cracks in that shell, Intel and Nvidia aren't dealing the cards anymore. I'm still waiting for a moment when someone tops over Microsoft in the OS space. Sadly, no contenders yet.

The PowerPC processors used in Macs at that time were a good bit ahead of Intel and the Pentium product line. Unfortunately, this was during the decline of Motorola. They simply could not keep up with the advantage and couldn't produce chips in meaningful quantities that would break the 2ghz barrier. So Intel caught up and surpassed them. Caused a breakup of the Apple/Motorola partnership and Apple moved to Intel processors where they have stayed until this year and the forthcoming move to ARM. Interesting times....

The Matt of Twitter (Ex Playstation engineer ) and the other Matt of era (verified dev of a third party) are
just tired of people who thinks for just see benchmarks on youtube or read marketing announcements
that means they are qualified enough to a discussion against them and win easily.

In any moment I just expecting any Matt just insult those armchair devs with something like:
giphy.gif

To be honest I am still found hilarious you use flops as something universal, is like you know which car will finish
first a race only using HP without know the terrain, the pilots, torque, the types of tires, weight and weather.

XSX is better than PS5 in some things and PS5 is better than XSX in other things but in the end doesn't matter
because a machine with hardware similar to Xbox 360 is selling ridiculous amounts.

Dusk's credibility and reputation took a massive dump with this whole re8 fiasco. He got demoted on ERA, chastized by Matt, harassed and insulted by Sony and even MS fans ... and the funny part is that he wasn't speaking falsehoods, but seriously lacking context in his original statement. However, he's probably biased (which isn't a crime) which can make his statements sound shady.

I bet that's where they show at least some things. We are Playstation nation here in Europe and Sony sends us some kisses from time to time to demonstrate that they appreciate it.

Imagine you're a father of two and you're spending 2 months of lockdown with your wife and kids, trying to work from home. When you are free, you want to play some games but the TV is taken, even the second TV is taken. You buy a Switch online, lock yourself in the toilet and play Animal Crossing.

In times like these, I really appreciate having a room and TV for myself.

When I saw the section of Xbox in Tokyo was sad to see, because even the
people say the only reason doesn't sell is because they don't buy any foreign
product but then you realize that every person has an Iphone.
Not because it's foreign but it feels foreign. I know a bit about the US and its culture but Xbox feels like made for someone else. I can't imagine how odd it must feel for someone from Asia.

there is some quote I was thinking about, can't remember where it is from, a movie perhaps.

We will build it and they will come. Aggh old age. "lollipop_disappointed:

This quote is also used as an objective in my MMO obsession this gen: Boundless.

It's a voxel building game, MMORPG, it looks 10 times better than Minecraft and has way more to it, I call it Minecraft for adults. There are many planets and it's a shared universe. Everyone is there at the same time. It's also cross-play between PC and PS4 (yep, no Xbox, Sony paid heavily for this actually, it's a crying shame people don't seem to know it well).

I never liked Minecraft, it looks very dated but also the gameplay didn't grab me. So I go exploring and then build stuff, ok, then what? With Boundless you can build (and you can build so many more nice things it's crazy!), go hunting, there's an in-game economy so you can run shops and sell to other players, go explore, specialise in 1 thing or another, etc., etc. it's amazeballs and I've clocked over 4k hours in since release in September 2018 on both PS4 and PC! It's also the reason why I have a gigantic backlog for the PS4!

Plus the devs are super nice, small Indie team from the UK, for example, last year I had to get some surgery and be in hospital for a while. Couldn't bring my PS4 Pro (it was one of those loud mofo's) but I did bring my Nvidia Shield with me to play streaming games using my Steam library, they gave me a Steam key for the game so I could keep playing while in hospital! How many devs do such things?

It's also funny when they showed the raytracing demo of Minecraft with the lighting and all that, well Boundless does all of it really rather well by, of course, faking it but it looks really very nice!

And pretty soon (now in Testing) they will release Sovereign and Creative Worlds, both rental worlds, every world runs on it's own server (instance) so you basically rent a server. Sovereigns are like normal public planets and need to obey the same rules as such, Creative worlds, well, you can give your self basically everything you want instead of needing to grind for it. They will also add Lua scripting to Creative worlds to make your own mods that run on the server (so everyone sees the same thing without needing to install mods locally). Lua scripting is currently only supported in local creative mode called sandbox mode (here the planet server runs on your pc, not supported on PS4). I am eagerly awaiting to get my hands on my own little world!

Xbox boss on the physics of the PlayStation 5’s design

“It’s hard because I know the physics that we’re both dealing with when it comes to these consoles,” Spencer told Whita. “And cooling these consoles — the power, the energy use — that presents real challenges this generation. We’re talking about consoles — with the CPU and GPU — that are real powerful computers, effectively.”

“We chose our design because we wanted a large fan that we could spin a little more slowly so we’re not making noise,” said Spencer. “We wanted a very quiet console, so noise was something that we focused on. So we built a form-follow-function design so that we could draw a lot of air with a big fan spinning a little bit slower so we didn’t get those high-pitched whining sounds that sometimes consoles can make.”

“So knowing that the PlayStation 5 is running at higher clocks, it just creates more [heat],” he said. “But that’s not a Sony problem.”

“I like the design of what they did,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for what the teams do at PlayStation. But they’re running their box differently than we are, and it creates unique design challenges in how you keep these things cool. That’s a problem for both of us, so that’s not a shock. And they took an approach that is different than what we did.”

Very honest answer, no shots that I can see, it really produces more heat that’s obvious, I really liked the tone and overall it shows you how bless we are to have both of these machines running the way they do at this “small” footprint.

Hope we get some kind of announcement today. The PS5 reveal event was also announced on Friday so who knows...
If there is a PlayStation event next week, they could announce it today.

I'm more expecting Sony to take a little more time though, they could publish something before Gamescom (for example in regards to backwards compatibility, UI or similar), but that would just be a blogpost.

If they still have game announcements to make, they will keep those for the same occasion in which they will finally announce pre-orders and price, and I can't see them just let Microsoft go second at this point in time (Microsoft still has to announce Series S, so the clock is realistically ticking much faster for them than for Sony).

Update on the cooling patent https://patentscope.wipo.int/search...20162417&tab=DRAWINGS&_cid=P20-KDTZ3J-94631-1

Brief reading suggests liquid metal instead of thermal paste/grease

Upon further reading vapour chamber to

Good find, so Eutectic metal layer for high contact and conductivity patent....interesting

YTou should create a thread, its funny peole go on about variable clocks, ps4 pro some versions go loud, some are quiet, its probably the efficiency of the paste and other stuff effecting the heat.

This patent solves the heat issue as it will perform consitently vs thermal paste.

I played quite a lot of Boundless, really enjoyed it. I found a few of the decisions they made around upkeep and making sure what you built didn't disappear a little freemium for a paid for game. I understand why some stuff is in place, but it was enough that coming back to the game for the second time to find all my stuff gone was enough for me to quit playing.

I will say that if you want to play, mine, be creative and enjoy a shared world then it's got Minecraft beat in a lot of ways. Great structure to how it plays with objectives and rewards to keep you interested in how you want to play the game.

Ah! But they now solved this a few updates ago! Now when your beacon runs out of fuel it will go into reclaim mode where it removes all your stuff and puts it in a special storage so when you come back after a while your build will be gone but all the items you had will be ready for you to reclaim!

Most people disliked losing all the stuff they had more than the actual build itself. They are still going to add blueprints later and they might add that to the reclaim function so when you can back you can auto build the stuff you build before as well.

Tho, many a time it's rather nice to start a new build and remove the previous one.

I suppose it's natural when you're watching the console manufacturers you back making dumb errors left right and centre, to grab onto something positive, and run with it as much as you can.

The facts don't fit the narrative though.

The Xbox Series X has a GPU that's about 15% more powerful than the Ps5. That's a fact. This is not going to be large enough of a power discrepancy to make Series X games look all that different from Ps5 games, unless you examine them both very closely side to side - and that's even before you take into account the elements of the Ps5 that are more powerful than the Series X.

These two consoles really are very evenly matched. It's just a matter of how well devs can exploit them both.

But I see the angle, people so eager to shove the PS5 into the X1 role next generation that they are even pricing it above XSX.

I never understood why exclusives are considered as anti-consumer.

Gaming is a luxury, you choose to buy into your preferred system. These big companies love to spin, that's it, if the tables were reversed the other company would be doing the exact same thing.

I have never understood why it is so hard for Microsoft to just do the bare minimum.

They have so much money available to them, all the resources in the world but somehow they have got themselves into this massive muddle of always seeming to fuck up.

Just produce quality games, that is in essence what people want, nothing else.

all this or, spin, this company is doing this, it's not right, anti consumer bla bla is bullshit.

Just make good old fashioned games and the fans will come.

Good grief, no.

The Xbox One was 1.31 tflops. The Ps4 was 1.84 tflops. That's a difference of 27%.
The Xbox One X is 6 tflops. The Ps4 Pro is 4.2 tflops. That's a difference of 30%.

The percentage difference between the Ps5 and Xbox Series X is half of that. It's a much smaller amount. You can't equate that power difference with the one between Ps4 and XBox One.

Ultimately, we're talking about different design philosophies for the next gen consoles. There was no real design philosophy difference between Ps4 and Xbox One. The Ps4 was just a more powerful X86 machine.

I still keep coming back to someone's theory of CU utilization. If the Xbox Series X is 12 TF peak (all its CUs at 100% efficiency) but in practice it's something like 40% and the PS5 is 10.2TF but with 60%, the difference is even smaller.

That has not worked out in the past as the device with the biggest TFlops performs better but Sony have customized the GPU more this time.

In an engine like Halo's Slipspace it might be 20% That's the whole problem.

According to some the PS5 is not only weaker, but slower, is using older tech, lacks a lot of features, has overheating issues and somehow is more expensive than the XSX. Sony made all the wrong choices, gotta love that logic.

I hope there's sony ps5 event this month, but it's looking there isn't :(

Lacks Tokyo game show. But your right. I don't know if PS will sneak in before games con on say the 20th or the 25th.

The PS4 UI was revealed at games con. Wonder if there is a repeat for PS5? 20 is a lot of games. If PS plan to do a show after those events. I don't see PS releasing their marketed games to be shown at Games Con & Tokyo Game Show. If there is a PS show before these two shows. I can see PS allowing extended game play footage to be shown at GC & TGS.

I think we'll get something on the 20th for PS5. And then Sony will support GC & TGS with extended game play footage. For sure PS have to be at the TGS. That's home court.

18% not 15 and that's not the GPU, that's the compute only. The architecture of both consoles is vastly different.
You will never predict the performance, you need to wait for DF 800% zoom to finally conclude.

you would have to provide source as so far all I've read is the exact opposite. Xbox devkit having overheating issues, less customised IO processors etc.

My though on this i don't give a flying fuck about 4K, fake 4K or whatever. Street Fighter V is native 1080p on PS4 but it has so many annoying things (mostly since AE update), some stages has some input delay, and the game has many fps instability/ the game keep rowing (is it the term to describe it?), those are really annoying specially for a fighting game. Meanwhile Tekken 7 is 900P on PS4 and doen't have those issues. MK11 is 1080p and don't have any of those issues as well (i think going for UE3 helped on this)

I mean 4K is cool and all, but hopefully devs won't push for it at all cost of other things, such framerate instability, input delay and such. Even more since anyone can hardly see the difference.

You will never predict the performance, you need to wait for DF 800% zoom to finally conclude.

That equation only works if you establish the Ps5’s 10.28 tflops as 100%, and the 12 tflops in the Series X as being beyond 100%.

This is a bad way to do the calculation, because we must take the Series X as the 100% mark, as it’s the more powerful.

So, if you take the Series X as the maximum in the calculation, then you have to work out what percentage 10.28 tflops is of the full 100% 12 tflops. That’s about 85% - therefore a 15% disadvantage to the Series X.

10.28 is 85% of 12. 100 - 85 = 15.

Maths is ... fun?

The question i have: could this extra power be used and how or is it just theorical?

None of us know this yet. We can only calculate the full GPU usage of both consoles right now, and extrapolate from there.

- PS5 boosts to 10.3tflops only, its 'base clock' is 9tflops, Cerny lying
- Devs are having a nightmare making games for it
- It's overheating
- The console is twice as big as Series X (fake measurement image being taken as gospel).
- Sony paid Tim Sweeney to say PS5 is a game changer
- UE5 demo was running on a Chinese laptop no problem
- PS5 is struggling with RE8 @ 1080P/60fps
- PS5 struggles with 4K games
