I'm replaying many N64 games and one of them is Diddy Kong Racing. Amazing game and it was awesome now as it was back then.

Since there's like 0% chance of Diddy Kong Racing making a come back (who owns the IP btw?), maybe Mario Kart could step in and incorporate the two things that made DKR an epic game:

Different types of vehicles
Adventure mode

I think Adventure Mode would fit Mario Kart very well. Nintendo is good at coming up with silly stories for Mario to take on, so they could definitely come up with a nice story for the game. Mario already has many different types of levels since the NES (Lava, Ice, mountains, sky, forest, etc).

For the vehicles it would also fit very well. I don''t like how you can drive underwater as if it's (almost) the same as driving normally. It has always been weird to me. The glider is cool, but an airplane it's 100% cooler. Maybe if they want underwater levels they could make a submarine race, or something like that. DKR had hovers, but Mario Kart could have Jetski.

IMO, Nintendo opened pandora box with Mario Kart 8 because there tons of possibilities with the future of the series. They can have characters, vehicles and items from any series (and maybe even third party), so they could also have different type of vehicles (imagine Fox McCloud having his Airwing for an airplane.

In terms of adventure mode - fuck yes. Why hasn't Nintendo done this yet? I agree with you 100%.

No. I love Diddy Kong Racing's different take. Exploration and secret levels and boss fights and whatnot added to a kart racing game is cool, it's just not the mario kart way.

All the more reason to make Donkey Kong Racing a reality.

There is room for nintendo to have multiple huge kart racers if they differentiate themselves from each other in terms of game design.

I, too, think that DKR is better than Mario Kart, but sadly it's highly unlikely that it could come back. The only kart racer that could fill the gap somehow is Mario Kart.

I'd agree Diddy Kong racing is better than mario kart 64, but other mario kart games are better.

Would love to have a modern DKR to compare to modern mario kart though

Bring back Diddy Kong Racing! It could basically be like Nintendo's version of Forza Motorsport (Mario Kart) and Forza Horizon (Diddy Kong Racing). Plenty of room in the market for both.

I'm gonna sound like a broken record here, but I wish we'd just get a new Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed. It's the best arcade racer that's ever been made.

That said, I do like Diddy Kong Racing better than Mario Kart (which in my mind has grown so incredibly stale since like 4 iterations ago). Mario Kart is the vanilla ice cream of kart racers. A classic but you know exactly what you're getting every single time.

Different kinds of vehicles would be cool but I think if they tried to do an adventure mode it would probably be a little stale, like the olympic sonic and mario games.

My reaction to the title was “What, you want Mario Kart to actually be fun?”

I don’t get why Mario Kart is so loved. It’s an okay series with okay games. Diddy Kong Racing was such a solid game.

Crash Team Racing is better than any Mario Kart, too

Diddy Kong Racing was one of my favourite games of the 64 era. Mario Kart hasn't changed much since then, same old formula. ADD SOMETHING TO IT NINTENDO!!

I know right!?! Back in the days, everytime i asked the other kids to play DKR with me they said "i dont wanna play it. its not mario kart, mario kart is the best. this is only a cheap ripp off"
I couldnt grasp it. Three completly different vehicle types. Much more tracks and gameplay modes. A great overworld. FRIGGIN Bossraces!

Sort of did this in the DS version but not quite the same.

The DS version in fairness though did have boss battles and the works.

Yeah, boats and planes are the next step, also an adventure mode, MK would be the game to own, instant masterpiece.

Mario Kart has always been about timed challenges, a story mode could be a good offer people look up to Mario Kart for its simplicity, tracks etc.
