What do you expect for the Playstation 'remote play' feature with PS5?

The company also reinforced the importance of its cloud-gaming plans with Playstation Now, and somewhat surprisingly doubled down on its underused Remote Play feature, saying the "evolution" of this would in the future "provide a seamless game experience anytime, anywhere".

Remote Play is already available as part of the PS4 package, enabling you to stream a game direct from the console to a computer, smartphone, tablet or PS Vita handheld console. But Sony says that going forward it will be "leveraging the latest computing, streaming, cloud, and 5G technologies" to allow it, and the performance of PlayStation Now, to improve.

This has been underwhelming for me, unless the device you're streaming to is hardwired (Laptop/PC), it's worked 'okayish' on a 802.11n iPad, and I only had a 802.11g Anroid where performance was poor (original Xperia Z). My PS4 has always been hardwired for info. I imagined i wuold be as good as the Wii U off screen play but it wasn't even close.

So how is this going to work going forward? Will it just allow access to the game on a PSNow library, will it still use p2p streaming, will it improve. What are your thoughts my Sony compadres?

Both my PS4 and Xbox One are hardwired for this feature. I play either system on my iPhone at least once or twice a week depending on others using the TV. I’m glad to see both companies are taking this seriously into the next generation.

It's always been bad for me as well, too much lag for me to want to play it, so I hope it can create a direct wifi connection with the client device like it already does for the Vita on PS4.

I am a heavy user of Remote Play and I use a third party app (PStreamer) instead of the official app because it allows you remap the controls and for some reason is super smooth working over the internet too. I absolutely love this feature because it allows me to play PS4 or XBOX from anywhere. One more reason my switch is collecting dust is because I prefer this setup over picking up switch when I'm away.

I'm excited that Sony is putting some focus here. This is a great feature and I'm hoping they will continue to make improvements.

Is the app on the android store?

No. You have to sideload it. Search for PStreamer.app and btw it is not free (9.99 one time after 14 days of free trial) but I have it running on all Shield TV devices and on the phone. It has a lot more cool features than the official app. It works flawlessly and with any controller (did I mention you can remap everything?). There is a similar app for XBOX called OneCast but I have moved away from it because the XCloud app is just simply amazing.

Thanks,

What the lag like? Is your PS4 hard wired ?

Remote play is pretty much just limited to bandwidth and network strength. Make sure your ps4/5 is hard wired though. But if the ps5 has WiFi 6 and you have a WiFi 6 router I wonder how well it would perform over LAN

Sure!

Barely feel any lag unless I'm playing games like Doom, SFV etc and even those are fairly playable. It is definitely there but it doesn't annoy me. I can't tell if there is any difference between the lag on PS4 Remote play or xCloud. They both feel the same.

Yes PS4 Pro is hard wired and I remote play at max settings all the time (1080p + 60 fps) But if you reduce that to 720 and lower frame rate, the experience gets even better, especially over the internet.

Remote play works well for me. I have a DS4 that I keep downstairs, I paired it with remote play app on my android so I can hop on for a minute sometimes.

One feature that is under utilized is share play on PS4. Works like remote play except another user connects from a different location connects and controls the game.

I hope both these features make it into PS5. They work well in the right circumstances.

I think it will stay like it is except it won't support the PS Vita.

They'll keep updating (hopefully remaking) the phone apps, as well as the Windows and MacOS apps.

I used to use it a lot on my Mac. It was awesome and played great without any issue whatsoever.

Any justifiable reason that could wish a third portable PlayStation into existence, I'm 100,000,000% for...

9rp1ODM.jpg

(*Dumb fake mockup, but the screen looks pretty)

I've never had any great luck with Remote Play though, even in the same room with my Vita and PS4. I never fiddled with it enough to know what the sweet conditions would be (PS Vita has some fiddly WiFi settings as is, and I'm not sure if my PS4 was ever running ad-hoc or if I was always routing through the internet even for two devices in the same room.) I keep wanting to try it more and find happiness with Remote Play if I can get it perfect, because I just prefer gaming on a portable with things moving about in my house. I just always reach for my Switch instead of my PS4 controller when I feel like gaming, and I'd like Sony to change that.

WiFi 6 in PS5 though should help Remote Play out though. (It would be even nicer if PS5 included the upcoming WiFi 6e protocol, which opens up another narrow bandwidth for lightning-quick close-casting signal for local devices, but the PS5 registration specs currently only call for WiFI6 straight so we'll see what it ships with or if Sony adds in any of its own feature set in the final product.)

There's some curiosity about wither PS5 VR could be done wirelessly with what they're shipping with, and the technology is on the horizon in certain manufactures' next-gen VR chipsets using most of and hopefully all of what's in the PS5's capability set. So if we're talking an acceptable VR experience with just <>3ms lag (or wait, that's way more than acceptable, considering an Occulus Quest hardwired to a PC with a Occulus Link cable can expect 20-40ms latency... is the math on that correct, or is WiFI VR really that much of a homerun?), you certainly should be able to get happy performance with your phone in a gamepad doc for a Switch-like PlayStation companion.

I sincerely hope they keep remote play. I use it all the time. Working from home, when I get a break in work I just fire up the app on my desktop and play nearly seamlessly from my he office. It’s been great these past 5 months.

I hope we don’t see more developers block this feature (Tetris Effect).

The article you quoted is from last year.

In any case, we recently saw that PS5 will feature wifi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.1. Wifi 6 reduces the 802.11ac latency in a 75%, which means will be ~1ms, almost the same than a wired connection, while increasing speed up to 1.2-1.5Gbps. Bluetooth 5.1 also improves speed and latency compared to previous versions. These two features mean a huge improvement in Remote Play, specially for 802.11ax devices.

And when using a 802.11ax router (they are too now so expensive, so will take a few years to become very popular but at least the console is ready), also for cloud gaming from PS Now or online multiplayer.

It's always 'smeary' when I tried it, which is sort of acceptable given the res and bitrate drops. The artifacting was awful though and even worse when it would work great for 10-15 minutes then bottleneck and stutter like a poor stream and catch up again. Made some games impossible to play. I used to have a Vita and even did the direct connection thing but same sort of shite. PS has always been hardwired, we don't have anything to intefere and tried ISP router, seperate router, different locations and even spent a week on the channel and frequency hopping. Did nothing.

I guess it's one of those things, you can either deal with the sub par quality or you can't. Bit like those who are and are not that sensitive to frame rate etc. I had a go of the free trial of Stadia for instance and that was much smoother using the same equipment etc.

Remote Play itself has never been appealing to me, but that's probably because I live in a one room apartment. I expect the feature to remain on PS5 though.

The only thing that would personally excite me would be a feature to cast my PC to the PS5. VPN combined with Netflix and Youtube with adblocker would be a winner.

I can see it being similar to how it is now or being dropped in favor of PSNow

50/50 on it really

They really should just release a streaming handheld device which works across ps4, ps5, psnow. Would help with ps now subs. Vita was excellent for it's time but it needs higher resolution, l2 and R2, r3 and l3 and a bigger screen. Vita is still the best way to remote play as you can stream directly from console.

They’ll have to give the Vita the app via firmware update. I check my Vita’s PSN store often because I’ll still buy games from there.

I'd like that a lot. I think the time for a dedicated portable PlayStation with its own exclusive games is not now, but if Sony released a device that was just meant to be a shell companion for PS5 (not even with the power of a Vita, just put all effort into WiFi and screen quality and button layout comfort,) I'd be into that if the price was right and the performance really was near-seamless anywhere in the house. WiFi 6 on PS5 makes that a lot more possible.

Imagine if they would release a Dualsense 5 controller where you could insert your smartphone, transforming it to a Vita 2.0... 😍

I'd be down for that too. The ergonomics and compatibility of most smartphone controller shells just doesn't convince me on their price, but if Sony did an official one and it had all the buttons of DS and was weighted right, that would be nice. Price is a factor in all of this, and already console accessories are priced way more than I like (DualShock4 is $60 and never really came down, I'm sure DualSense will be at least that; a far cry when PS controllers were $20-40 while 3rd Party controllers were abundant and inexpensive and fully compatible,) so I'm wanting something that I know could be made for a reasonable price but chance are will not be by my cheapo price range...

They’ll have to give the Vita the app via firmware update. I check my Vita’s PSN store often because I’ll still buy games from there.

Remote Play with Vita will only ever be as good as the Vita WiFi is, so I don't think we'll see any improvement there with PS5. Vita will need to add support, but I think Sony would go at least that far (they have been putting out very minor firmware upgrades for its sadly abandoned Vita, and the PS Store is still stocked regularly with Vita titles.)

i think it will stay the same as it is now , no improvements . Otherwise they would have talked about it by now

Heh, well, nobody's talked about much of anything with these new consoles. They've barely talked about the Home page, if at all, but I'm not expecting to boot straight into my games like it's a Genesis when I pop a disc in... There's still lots of stuff about these new consoles that we'll find out later. Not that EVERYTHING will be great and wonderful and that they're hiding magical Remote Play perfection so they can spring it on us as a pre-order gotta-have feature, but the talk so far has been very, very limited and concentrated, and given the specs of PS5, there are some things that are almost guaranteed to be better but we just don't know how they'll be implemented.

Huh? Not anymore needed to side load or pay for it.

Also available for IOS BTW

less than 100ms of lag would be nice... but because that's most likely a codec issue that's only fixed if they fix their tech already!

with Steam Remote Play and Xbox Remote Play being below 50ms it's about time

well did they fix the input lag issue on the xCloud app?
I only tested it like 2 times but the latency was way higher than with the PC remoteplay function they added a few years ago, and I tried both in Wifi

it seems the beta xCloud app streams your system to a server and that server then streams it to you, at least that's what it felt like since the lag felt worse than just using xCloud

meanwhile the PC Xbox Console Companion app has very low latency

I'm not the one to bitch about latency or framerate usually, i have no problem with 30 fps games in fact but....i can't stand the lag in remote play when playing anything remotely fast paced that requires precision, i've tried DMCV and some fighting games and it feels horrible and more often than not even the image can turn into mush. I've played other more casual stuff tho, like some yakuza and the goose game. If anything, i just want improved latency honestly and maybe a little better IQ for fast paced games too.

I was never satisfied with the lag xCloud beta had. It has definitely gotten much better now.

Btw, the app has two modes: Stream from cloud or stream from your console (ala Remote Play). I have tried both and they both seem to have similar lag, it sometimes get annoying but mostly plays fine. I feel PS4 Remoteplay has less lag than the xbox app.

I think stream from console mode gives me the same kind of latency as PC console companion app. But on PC, I usually download the game via PC gamepass. The save files gets synced seamlessly which is beautiful. (well unless the game isn't available on PC of course). This allows you to run the game at a much higher fidelity.

last time when I tested Remote play through the xCloud app the latency was WAY higher than the PC companion app. the PC app has latency around 50ms or less, the xCloud app felt like 100ms at least.

but maybe it has improved now, gotta test it again

Yes, unfortunately, there's always reason to be leery of good specs until you've actually had a chance to try the machine out, because there's unfortunately always some way to screw up a good thing ... and wireless connectivity on PlayStations has never been a perfect situation. If all goes according to the possibilities of the spec, we should see some significant improvements in everything PS5 does wirelessly over past PlayStations, but let's cross our fingers that it all works out that way.

I'm interested, it takes a little bit of convincing to get me to pay for software but I'm starting to feel like it's the "adult" thing to do, to actually give money to stuff you use a lot, even if it's only virtual stuff! 🙇‍♂️

Please check back in when PS5 launches because stuff like this which might make lives better sometimes doesn't get much note. Like, the fact you can tether your Nintendo Switch to your phone and bank off your wireless datacap while away from the house, that's something I never hear about anybody doing but it's possible. Remote Play and stuff like it, that's also been something I've seen mentioned and then forgotten in how-to hardware guides, but the people who actually use it all the time seem really happy and I'd like to be one of them some day if I can get a good Remote Play signal going right...

It's a controller for your phone. I experiment with this stuff and different controllers all the time. Message me if you need any help.

This particular controller is called Razer Kishi:

And I'm using a Note 10+ phone with Pstreamer app for remote play. And yes, it works outside of your house over the internet as well. This controller works with PS4, Xbox and Steam Link and tons of those emulations apps.

Just reporting back on PS5 and XSX remote capabilities. There is an app on Google Play called PSPlay that can do PS4/PS5 remoteplay with any controller. We know Xbox app can do that natively. Razer Kishi still holds up as the best telescopic controller for phones but now I've found another controller that works with your largest tablets. Ipega 9083s.

PS5 remoteplay is super smooth - 1080p 60 FPS. Over the internet, I had to reduce it to 720p 30 FPS.
