Alright, let’s get the bizarre aspect situated first. Captain of a ship, who is an orangutang is involved with an unorthodox stand which will be the ship itself. For good measure, we’re making the orangutang a pedophile...

His back hurts/lumbago. Hasn't recovered or told his assistants to work on HxH.
Seems like the easiest work in the world. You can just enter a room, write the story board for the chapter on a whiteboard standing up, then have your faithful crew draw everything up

He must have lost the love for it too or something? Laziness? HxH is too good to simply give up on. Something else must have happened we’re not aware of maybe

Legit one of the most disturbing moments in the entire series.

Unless he is physically or mentally unable, and I mean a real condition, he has no reason to not be working on it. That said, I think he should be the one to draw, even if t's crappy art like in the Chimera Ant arc. I wonder if he lives entirely off his savings? How can he live without working? What the hell does he even do these days? Imagine how disappointed his wife must be with him.

His art isn't why people read HxH, not like he is Miura either.

Has his wife worked in a while? Isn't she the SM chick?

All the more reason the hiatus is nonsensical. It shouldn't take a lot of time to produce a chapter every few weeks (to be generous). Other authors are working their asses off to meet weekly deadlines. On top of that, the recent chapters are filled with dialogue (which amounts to mental masturbation) so there is even less art to draw.

His wife is the author of Sailor Moon. I wonder what kind of life they have together. Goofing around all day?

From what I remember the guy has no deadlines and can take as long as he wants to make another chapter.

But how does that work? Is he independent and free to do whatever he likes whenever he feels like it? Does Jump have no say in his productivity?

Jump told him to do whatever he wants. Since HxH is one of their big sellers I believe. From what I remember anyway.

Bernkastel

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
Togashi's Yu Yu Hakusho saved Jump by keeping it relavant back then. He was very unhappy with the rushed ending due to Jump's deadlines, so he signed a deal with Jump that lets him release as he wishes.

I'm not sure how I feel about the art style for the new Higurashi. It looks strange.

So... How pervy is HxEros? A worthy successor to the glorious dumpsterfire that was Ishuzoku Reviewers, or just another boring plebcel protag waifubait?
There is a ton of fanservice, but it is heavily censored to the point of being almost unwatchable. They typically won't even show underwear.

Even with years inbetween volume releases, each new HxH volume sells more than a millioncopies easy every time. He is a big enough name in the biz, and if he really has back issues etc. then Jump has no problem with him going on these breaks probably.
If he comes back for a couple chapters every year or two, to give enough material for a new volume, Jump gets some nice cash for that volume, and if he is still on hiatus they don't lose anything anyway.

Yeah, everybody is so hyped, but I have my doubts:
- The opening songs will never be as good as the original two
- The art style feels a bit too colorful for the horror genre
- Will they really do enough episodes to do a proper full adaption without rushing?

I've been watching a lot of anime lately, probably as I've been kind of bored with most western drama or action series.

  • Uzaki-chan wants to hang out - I only started watching this due to the "controversy", so I checked it out and it's surprisingly wholesome and enjoyable rom-com. It subverts a lot of typical anime tropes and Uzaki is on the right side of being annoying. Or should I say, her teasing behavior feels more good-hearted as the character interactions aren't solely defined by it.

  • Bofuri - My daughter loved watching this one with me, and as far as a OP character story it's just fun and light-hearted. Seeing "Maple" stumble onto all kinds of ridiculous OP stuff is just fun and despite not understanding so much of the dialogue, my daughter really enjoyed it.

  • The Misfit of Demon King High - As far as an OP story it feels kinda bland. I'd say it's just okay, something akin to In Another World With a Smartphone or whatever it's called. Maybe it'll surprise me later, but these first half has been just okay for me.

  • Blend-S - Only heard of this thanks to that Snoop Dogg video mix of the intro, but finally decided watching it. Fun slice of life with rom-com elements. Nothing fantastic, but enjoyable and having some good comedy bits. The MC being perceived as unintentionally sadistic made for a lot of fun moments, but it wasn't too overplayed as it could've been, which would've made it tiring.

  • The Disastrous Life of Saiki K - Started watching this during the start of Corona virus season. Really fun gag series that I enjoyed all the way throughout. Some characters were just a big miss for me, like that one guy that babbles constantly and finds out the truth about Saiki. That gag felt just flat and unnecessary for the flow. Honestly wish there were more seasons of it. Or a follow-up with Saiki's kid if he ever got one.

  • Azur Lane - I don't know why I watched this, might be perhaps because I tried to play the game a bit and needed something to watch while I surfed the net or played FGO. A lot of things here seemed really convenient. Whether it's the obvious whole ship girls thing or the retarded Sakura Empire (was it an allusion to WW2? Trying to wash their hands off the events? Almost seemed like it.) or how easy the Azur Lane base got infiltrated. I wouldn't say it was bad, just meh.

  • Demon Slayer (anime+manga) - Really surprised me. I had heard good things about it, but didn't really feel the need to watch it. But I put it on and I very quickly watched all of season 1. Then I jumped over to the manga. It's definitely not a series which overstayed its welcome. If anything I feel like the pacing might've gone too much into high gear and it feels a bit rushed towards the latter end. That said, had a much better conclusion than Tokyo Ghoul or Bleach.

  • Knight's & Magic - A lot of things made little sense in this Isekai series. More so in regards to how they dealt with the OP part of the isekai, depending on the MC's model building experience and his programming experience. How they had to raise the stakes just made me lose the suspense of disbelief, especially considering the improvements the MC had done and just how proficient he was at almost everything. Trying to blame it on other people being better at iterations. Just felt overall badly balanced and mostly the interesting parts was seeing how the MC came up with new improvements and designs of his mechs.

  • Our love has always been 10 centimeters apart - An okay romantic drama. Overall pretty wholesome and cute. Though the big dramatic conflict was of the love interest's own making, as she treated the "MC" (or are they both the MC? Felt like the guy had more of the overall perspective, but that might just be my impression and might not hold up to scrutiny) badly by completely freezing him out, due to her own guilt trip. Then again, the guy was acting unneededly shy and feels a bit far-fetched (though it's a romance series, so romanticism is kind of expected) how long they both stayed single and far from each other all those years.

  • Wise Man's Grandchild - A middle of the road okay Isekai. Feels like the former part is better than the latter. Definitely frustrating (in a good way) seeing the backstory of that Demon leader, how he went from an idealistic fellow to someone hating the kingdom and its people. However, when the villain suddenly becomes interesting and fleshed out than the hero cast, it makes the story overall uneven and lacking in direction. Overall just okay, perhaps even very mediocre.

Uzaki literally shits on the mc in front of her friends at one point and gets zero shit from it. Since that chapter I just didn't care much for her or the manga. Also her head is fucking weird/off putting.

AL has great music, but they blew their entire budget in the first eps. Only if you play the game (for a while) should you watch it. The Sakura empire fucking up is canon in game just differently and is a refreshing take on these types of genres seeing how Kancolle handled it or how Nippon can do no wrong. Based China gacha games Eagle Union dab.

HxH actually looks pretty good in the tankouban releases so he's actually doing work on the art but I'd imagine it's much slower paced for him with his health. It also seems like he still wants to work it himself as well so that probably contributes to the slowness.

This anime season is kind of slow. I'm only watching ReZero S2. I've seen Uzaki and Peter Grill though since a friend of wanted to watch it. Uzaki is annoying and boring while Peter Grill is the trashfire the manga is and I'm okay with that, lol

This isn't so much about traditional anime/manga discussion, but I just recently got in the mail a 4k blu-ray copy of Kimi no na wa (your name.) Was only released internationally, but it still has english subs. I already fucking love this movie, not just as an anime, but as a film.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that god we need more anime on 4k. It's so crisp and clear. I love how good it looks.
Anime is usually like 720p upscalled to 1080p. Your name is most likely upscalled.

It's upscaled and sharpened. Looks like some shit you'd torrent. Is there any native 4k modern anime?
Nope. I think some have hdr support, but people are better off just getting regular bd. We don't even have native 1080p anime yet outside movies.

I forgot, bd releases will have better audio as most streaming sites/services have kuso audio. (dts-hd vs crunchyroll's AAC 128kbs shit lol)

I just watched 15 or so episode of Rainbow Days. I just had to drop it by just how awful it was. It falls within the same area as Oreimo, which also hit a point where I had to realize that it was utter trash, being utterly irredeemable. However, Rainbow Days manages to spend those 15 episodes with very little progress for the MC and his love interest. Okay, fine, I've already experienced that with Our Love is 10 cm apart, though that got further in far fewer episodes, although I guess Nisekoi would be a far more extreme example, but it relied mostly on comedy and on harem-banality.

However,
it manages to spend a fucking long time on the guy's friend crushing on the love interest's friend, then only becoming interested in her because she dislikes him and yells at him. Okay, fine, it's a bit weird, but fine. Some like what they can't get. Oh wait, the girl clearly says she's not into men and is in love with the MC's love interest/her friend. Okay, now you leave her be, just say that you were interested in her and that you'll respect her own sexuality and perhaps say that you might still want to be friends, right? Nah, pestering her constantly, creeping up on her in all kinds of situations, forcefully kissing her, etc. Okay, maybe it's a story of how he comes to terms with an unrequitable love and matures? Nah. It literally goes to shit as this continues and the chick is treated as a mental case, supposedly slowly changing because he's pestering her and sometimes leaving things or helping her.
So at this point I saw where things were going and went straight to wikipedia, because I don't have time to spend watching a long drawn out crap series that goes where this one was heading. And my fears were confirmed. Fucker actually manages to start dating her and all her own feelings and dislike of men creeping, was because of her being teased by boys being in love with her in the past and her brother who she adored leaving as he got married and moved in with his wife, making her feel betrayed by men. WTF is this shit? This is bottom barrel shit. There are of course other things about the anime that makes it utter trash, but this was the most grating element of it. There's a certain line you can keep pushing on someone to want you, but it requires a finesse and subtlety in a romance story. Not a jackhammer through all the episodes.

Now, I know why this happens. It's because it's based on a shoujo manga, which can often have pretty fucked up female views of relationship and sexuality. However, there are tons of awesome shoujo mangas dealing with complicated issues in ways that aren't just utterly insulting to the characters. Similar things have happened in some shounen focused harem mangas as well, but those at least have ambiguity and the banality of its genre to make it all just accepted as a stupid trope.
I think it's the first time since Oreimo that I utterly quit an anime because of how awful it was. Only reason I held on so long was to see whether they were going to subvert my expectations and there were always a few hints that it might. But nah. Same fucking thing happened with Oreimo. I wish I'd never seen Oreimo and I wish I could unsee Rainbow Days.

Deca-Dence ep 8 - One of the better eps. Dio's VA makes everything better. Excellent job as Roswaal in Re;Zero as well.

I've yet to watch Deca-Dence. Dio's VA in a lot of works. I was surprised to find him in the Tales of the Abyss anime -- which is a terrific anime on its own, no need to have played the game.

Hope I'm not derailing anything here. Just wanted to say that this is an awesome thread and seems to contribute some of the best to GAF communities.

I was thinking the other day...anyone every refer to yourself as Otaku (don't ask Miyazaki on this...you know his answer)? And when did it become a thing to sling derogatory terms toward anime fans like "weeb" or "weaboo" around? I remember first hearing weaboo used in Yahoo anime chat around 2007 and having to reference urban dictionary just to find out what it was.

Being an Otaku is not really specific to anime, though I guess for us Westerners, it's used that way. I feel like I'm not obsessed enough to count as an Otaku. I don't buy figurines or other merch and I mostly just enjoy what I consider well-crafted works of fiction. I like to read discussions on them here and there and sometimes participate. It's definitely one of my preferred mediums due to the freedoms associated with it (crazy art / composition / animation + any subject matter). I'm also partial to certain subsets of the art styles associated with the "anime" aestheic.

Though if it affects your social skills, technically you're an Otaku. There might be a case to be made for me from that angle. Not just from anime, but movies / youtube / podcasts, etc. Doesn't feel like that would be too rare nowadays, though.

That's probably about the best way to define Western Otaku (s). There was a huge rift between who were the Otaku and who were the Weaboo. YouTube has provided a little insight into that (if you watch an anime cringe video and you're an anime fan...you'll see that what people do in those videos is just not normal). I think it's nice to collect a few figures, hard copy anime, JP-RPGs or visual novels, reading manga, and even to discuss it publicly as a large point of influence. I think where I see the weeb line get crossed is when someone (Westerners in this case) gets into anime and believes they are "transitioning" into a Japanese person. They start buying Pocky, they wear cosplay into public places (saw someone do this in my music shop back in the States), they start uploading videos of themselves trying to sing J-Pop on YouTube while dressed in cosplay, they become a homespun martial arts expert and aren't afraid to don a Naruto costume while attempted to cut plastic with a fake katana. I mean, you can do those things without crossing the weeb line but it seems the younger audience really falls into that area. 7-years ago, I did not hear anime fans referring to themselves as Tsundere / Yandere and the waifu thing just popped up in the past 10-years. I'm not judging but many who go to the extremes often call themselves Otaku. I believe they give a bad name to Otaku. Maybe it's just something about the age, too. I guess I was probably a bit exaggerated when I was a teenager, too. I like anime the same today but I can't say that it shows on my public image.

I always considered Otaku to be the Japanese version of Gimpy.

(Not specifically a Gimpy video but close enough.)
