Now With Xbox Series X Price Point Has Officially Been Announced To Be $499, How Much Will PlayStation 5 Cost?

I think they should price something at $400 or less. I don’t think they would quite compete at the $500 point, and I don’t think they would want to compete at $299. I’d love to see it at $349 and $399 or up to a max of $449.

To compete at $499 would likely require something extra to sweeten the deal.

The Xbox One X seems more powerful than the Series S. At the very least it has a stronger GPU (6 TF)
Uhhhh just now seeing this. This can be an issue with Xbox game optimizations. No problem with less fast ram for the GPU, but less slow ram for the CPU? And Slower Clock speed? Also I think the ZEN2 CPU could use a bit more Bandwidth.... Maybe.

If sony are really ballsy they'll go $350 discless and $450 phy. This gen is about securing the digital subscribers and therefore securing PS6 install base. So the pay off is going to be huge and therefore they should be using digital to subsidize.

A 40 CU 5700 XT (RDNA 1) takes up 251 mm^2, so that would put the PS5's APU at ~285mm^2, or ~21% smaller than the XSX's. A 21% difference in size is not going to equate to a $100+ difference in the total cost. Especially since other components of the system are probably more expensive, such as the SSD.

SX SoC is > 360mm^2 with according to DF the GPU occupying ~40% of the die.

This is how i see it, but it will be $499 and $399. This gen is about creating an all Digital Install base. In 2027-8 when the PS6 comes out, its hard to walk away from your entire library, also the PS6 will probably be backwards compatible with PS5.

I think it’s a real problem if PS5 is more expensive and the console is weaker. My expectation is £449 now.

will it be amongst the general public though?

I know my more casual friends in 2013 still bought the Xbox one despite it being weaker and more expensive because of the brand

and they didn’t even care for Kinect! I know it boggles the mind

the average person just sees PlayStation 5 and goes for it, extra money and all

When you look at exclusive games from a fidelity standpoint its going to be

PS5 exclusives >>>>>>> Anything on Xbox until they stop cross gen development. And even then its a wait and see.

Sony are foolish if they sell either for less than 599 as they're in a position where they can charge whatever they want as the fanatics that are seen in droves on this site will lap it up and spount nonsense about how much its worth it.

Sony are throwing away money if they charge less than 599.

People didn't expect the PS4 to be 399.99 when it launched either. Sony will surprise everyone again because they'll never repeat the PS3 price point mistake. They learned a hard lesson they won't ever forget.

Sony isn't releasing the PS5 to secure a digital PS6 install base. Sony is releasing it to sell PS5 games. They won't want people buying a PS6 to play their PS5 digital libraries any more than they want people buying a PS5 to play their PS4 libraries. The only way this makes sense is if Sony is also trying to move to a recurring revenue distribution model like Gamepass.

$599
$499

"I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can. I don't necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games... all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform."

Lowest price for next gen is 299.

I cant imagine disc Ps5 being more than 499 with the power gap itll have vs Series X. So I think 499 and 449. Disc drive doesnt cost 100 so i dont think were getting 100 discount.

Rethinking discless. Maybe they would sell at 399 at a loss since they get more on each software purchase.

$500. That's been my guess all along, and I think it's also what the majority of people have expected.

As for the digital edition, I expect it to be $50 cheaper.

Around 499$ is my guess with the DE being the cheapest model. Heck I might get the DE just because it looks the best and digital hasn't really bothered my ever since I started to game in my PC.

At least one model will be $399.99 or less. And if they end up as 299 and 399, the minute that tweet goes up will be the same minute Sony won next gen's install base competition.

Even with the better mind share and games, It would be SUICIDE to go in higher than the Series X.
They've also now had the chance to see the Xbox pricing, so balls in their court to take advantage.

£399 and £349 for me. Although I could see them matching the X on the top model, but all this £700 stuff is mental.

Where did anyone get the indication that Playstation will announce their price today? I saw people commenting about it, but where have they said anything about it?

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
That controller is expensive, guys.
I feel like you're right - Sony took a bit of a gamble by updating their controller and adding innovative, yet potentially expensive features. Microsoft played it safe and simply iterated logically but doesn't have stuff like adaptive triggers.

I expect the stand alone Microsoft controllers to stay in the $60 price range. Honestly, I expect the Dualsense to be a $80-$100 addon purchase.

Well if the GPU is only 40% of the die, then the size difference between the two consoles is going to be even smaller than estimated.

Look at the difference in relative space usage! On that SX die the special non CPU/GPU parts occupy less than half of that occupied by the CPU, which itself is maybe 20% of the total die. This means that those parts on the PS5 chip would need to be enormously larger in order to come close to losing basically 30% of the GPU.

Don't forget the SX GPU is a 56cu part with 4 disabled for yields so assuming that the PS5 GPU uses 36/40, you are looking at a very substantial space, and thus cost saving. Its likely to be a cheaper part to manufacture, and given how highly its clocked I'd suspect yields have to good.

I assume the Ps5 was built in mind to be 399 to begin with, the sudden spike in certain parts is what makes it uncertain that they will tech that. I read recently that certain parts have come down in cost recently (someone here shared a link I believe) so idk what to think. I do think the disc less version will be 399 no matter what though.

I think it was an oversupply of nand due to the drop in demand for the chips because of Covid. Which are the parts that Bloomberg said was jacking up the BOM.

£499 and £379, But I think they'll sell the digital one directly, and retailers will only get the disk version.

Someone told me once that the BOM for the controllers tend to be a reaction of the MSRP. So while the DualSense might be more expensive than the Xbox One controller it probably isn't that much higher. It's not like adding the adaptive triggers is going to increase the MSRP by 40$ or anything.

Not by itself, sure. But the Dualsense also has a built in microphone as well as a built in speaker, as well as an internal battery. It's also got the DS4's gyro sensors and trackpad. Xbox controller has none of this.

I'd love to see them stay in the price point of $60 though, that would be a good value.

I am expecting it to be higher but nothing like a jump from 60$ to 100$. It's not like an elite type controller or anything.

A lot of people seem to forget (or maybe they are too young to remember) that Sony often likes to sell at a loss and make profits by other means. They have done so ever since the first playstation and they can do it again, especially now that they have more ways to make profits.

A small loss maybe, not a $200 loss like some here are expecting.

Things aren't like they were 25 years ago. Sony isn't going to sell at any more of a loss than they have to. PlayStation is pretty much what is keeping Sony alive right now and they likely can't afford to lose much on launch. Microsoft is probably in a better position to lose money on hardware. Sony won't come in higher than Microsoft after the Xbox price announcement, but they're probably not going to come in lower than Microsoft for their high end model.
