PlayStation 5: Nov 12 / Nov 19 - $399/$499

I'm getting XBOX SX at launch since I have game pass and an elite controller, but that digital PS5 has me tempted to get both. The value on the Series S just isn't there anymore IMO, and is is kind of a silly diversion after this. They might need to lower it to $249 at this point.

With those specs, Series S needs to be $150 or less. You can get a 3 times more capable machine with more storage and more/faster RAM with $100 more. Series S is useless

Why do I get the feeling that Sony may make up for the 399 price for the DE by charging more for the digital version of the games during sales etc..than what you be able to get the physical copy for? Like even higher prices than current gen?

That may make the 499 PS5 the better overall value? 🤷‍♂️

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
It's good.

The only thing that could derail them at this point was the price, and it is pretty reasonable.

They're gonna win again this generation.

No Canadian price yet though right? I wonder if they'll eat some of the conversion following Xbox doing that, about the same 20 dollars to bring the digital edition to 499 rather than 522.

In Canada as well? Too bad you can't cross the border anymore. Could have had a 15% discount after taxes, at least.

Amazing how (sheds a tear for our beloved Liz the 2nd) all the other currencies apart from the Quid/Nicker/20 Bob (kneels in deference to our great monarchy - for fear of beheadment) pretty much align.

We should have a new world currency. It should look, feel and be worth similar to a potato.

Would be interesting in Game on a Saturday afternoon.

That's smart. Doesn't this mean PS5 preorders go live before Xbox?
Yes. Which I believe is better than actually launching first by a few days. Preorders lock in the sales. People will be willing to wait.

...now we see if MS makes a move and tries to just open up preorders too. That would be insane.

Surprised with the 399 but thats a good price. 499 just for a disk drive seems like a yuge waste uneless you live somewhere with no internet or something. Basically the price of the PS4.

Gonna be tough now for XBOX with the XSS. Just drop the price of PSNow and put all of PS4 1st party on there and you are getting really tempting.

Exactly why I'll be getting the physical version. Physical games can be bought from any retailer and go on sale/fall in price faster than digital. I think it's worth the extra $100. Plus it's not like you can't pick up a digital game here and there if it's cheap

If DeS is a launch title, I need to pre-order one.... I was trying to avoid it.

194 people currently have the digital edition in their basket on ShopTo compared to 681 people for the physical edition.

Some insight there into the appetite for physical gaming. Even with the steep price advantage people don't want to get stuffed with high game prices and no resale value.

To compare just 59 have the XSX. After MS announced their price it went up to about 150 so things not looking good in the UK for MS unless the XSS goes well, ShopTo doesn't have that listing up yet though...

The 100 dollar difference is maddening. Its like they are trying to take the power away from consumers by discouraging to go for physical version.

I mean, go for it if you want. You can easily recoup that if you go for used games and cheaper physical copies. Can't go wrong with either, I'm already all digital so I just save that off the bat.

399 is a fantastic price to hit though. 100 more than the Series S to hit the full ungimped vision of next gen.

Fucking brutal that the show didnt mention release date or launch line up etc and i have to find it all out myself.

For demon souls i buy but will i get one at launch?
Feels dumb you have to be lucky to get something you pay money for .

Its like the trabant all over again

$500/$400 as I predicted months ago. People who recently said $449/$349 were just as delusional as those prediction doomsday $600+. Especially after MS announced $500/$300, it should've been pretty obvious price parity at the top end and $400 or so for the digital edition are the only price points that makes sense.

Sony isn't cash rich enough to go lower. They're already likely leaving money on the table at $500, tho I'd like to see the official cost of materials. The $400 digital edition is very likely losing a little $ per unit sold, tho there's a chance the $500 unit is losing less or possibly breaking even.

Edit: in any case I'm looking forward to picking one of these up along with an Xbox Series X in November.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Incoming ms price drop.......series s can't stay at $299, even the x perhaps should drop......

MS could surprise us all by killing the S and releasing a discless Series X...

It's really great pricing. Well done Sony... but horrible presentation. (I don't want to see that rendered bumper anymore!)

I wished they'd reveal more info about the hardware.... :(
Anything regarding BC on how much it will enhance over Pro ver? Any physicial photos of how big the system really is or whatnot.

I guess I will enjoy the rest of the PS4 Pro games (YS 9, 13 Sentinels, Persona 5 Strike) and Switch games (Age of Calamity, especially) - before I jump in to PS5.

I don't like the idea of Europe waiting a week for the launch. Yes it's only 7 days, but still sends a message.

Pricing is good, I'm picking up the bluray version for sure.

Yeah, one of their best market is 'Rest of the world'. I know it's 'just' a week but it doesn't feel good either way.

I feel like I’m stuck getting the disc version for back compatibility alone. Fuckers got me in a situation....

Everyone quoting $399 don't care about the disk drive all of a sudden? What happened to muh series S is going to fail with no drive crowd?

I think we know by now SonyGAF has zero intellectual honesty or consistency. It's all a PR game for fan boy warriorz who wish they were on the Sony payroll.

That said, the $400 price point is a good one for the digital edition. Sony's hand was forced by the $300 Series X. Both companies are going to lose money on the digital consoles. Sony doesn't have the cash reserves for a battle of attrition but they do have significantly better global mindshare. So both companies are going with the "make money on the razor blades" model as should be expected.

This should be interesting to see how it plays out. We'll get to see how much price matters vs perceived value. It's clear the better hardware value at the low end is the digital PS5. But will the Series S $100 lower price plus Game Pass make up for it? Xbox may consider a quick price drop to $249 and/or include some value add stuff like digital game bundles and/or 12-month Game Pass subs (if not at launch then soon after).

The value proposition is reversed at the top end with Series X holding the hardware advantage at the same price and Sony offering the promise of more/better exclusives in later months. The launch window will show us if a more powerful Xbox at the same price can blunt the projected Playstation advantage. I suspect PS5 will maintain a similar hardware sales lead this gen of 2:1, but it's going to play out a little differently as it's pretty clear MS's strategy depends far less on hardware sales to hit profit targets.

From a consumer standpoint this played out well. MS forced Sony to go with a lower $400 price point (that they are most likely losing money on per unit). And gamers have two good options at a cheap entry point.

Personally, I'd go with PS5 digital for "only" $100 more. But we have to remember that for many families - especially in the middle of a protracted pandemic depression - they may not be able to budget that extra $100 so the Series S wins for that subset.

I'll be picking up both $500 consoles and calling it a day...until maybe picking up a presumed "special edition" of the S. For me the 512gb drive is too small but release a 1tb version and I'll put one in my spare bedroom.

I've been thinking I might wait for a slim redesign of the PS5 as that thing is ginormous with an ugly as sin color scheme (and I keep going back n forth on whether or not I like the design...sometimes I appreciate the design risk, other times it just looks like a tacky piece of Chinese garbage). Ultimately, I don't know if I can resist any new launch console. If Sony surprises us with a black variant I'm 100% in.

Yes I know a lot of people don't mind it and it's a very good price but I'm not touching a digital-only console with a pole. MS tried to pull alot of shady stuff back in the day and there was a lot of (deserved) backlash. Now a lot of people are ok with this "smoth" transition from both MS and Sony but the result wont be so good for the consumer.

It's inevitable we all know but I will never play along with it as long as there's options. Then we'll see.

Will be in a conundrum as well choosing between digital-only or disc. $100 USD difference will hurt bad here in Canuckistan, in a province where we have to pay tax...
