$399 PS5 is significantly more expensive than a $299 XSS or a $499 XSX in the long run. Here's why

I find the PS5 Digital a bit revolting tbh, ok i noticed a few days ago, Dark Souls 3 priced at 59.99 on PStore, funny i remember buying the disc for cheaper some months after release 🤔
They want to keep gamers controlled and limited to their store, what about finding some game on sale at a retail store?nope you have to buy it on digital silly.
Yes there will be sales and all that but i fear most people that buy their PS5 digital won't save $100 in the long run, some games will be cheaper others more expensive but there is no choice anymore for them.

Now you might think, well they are providing the consumer a choice between digital and physical, but by making one cost $100 less they are pushing the digital version and helping kill the retail market, good for Sony but i argue its bad for the consumers, there is no freedom anymore.

A very important point, with Xbox at least GamePass box provides plenty of content for a cheap subscription (and cheaper price for the box even if the specs aren't up to PS5) there is no such thing with PS5 Digital Edition, PlayStation store is NOT Gamepass, its not the same value unless they make big changes im very worried about this im hoping im wrong for everybody sake

Im going all digital, but because i don’t usually buy the game’s at release (sales) and besides I usually buy cards cheaper than original price

I was thinking this exact thought this morning, the series s with gamepass is actually great value compared to the PS5DE, despite the big hardware difference.

The PS5DE is a sick joke with $125 AUD games, Sony knows it, but will grandma know it? poor little johnny-six-pack

full disclaimer will be trading in my pro and X1 for the disc version of both next gen consoles.

Sony has the advantage of a few great studios and their output but I actually think the xbox hardware and software ecosystem is far ahead in many ways.

I suspect just like this gen my Ps5 and switch will gather dust between a few big exclusives, majority of gaming to be done on PC and xbox.

The quality argument that Sony fans claim is evaporating in front of their eyes, the last couple of MS titles released were rated anywhere from 85 to over 90, but they are in denial and are trying to write them off with their mental gymnastics.

Xbox is simply the much better overall package when it comes to the ecosystem in which you will spend the next 5+ years into that is undeniable.

For the record, as gamers we are lucky in the year 2020 where the cost of phones have reached $1,500, tech and cost of living is an all time high, we get to choose from the most powerful systems ever released for the cheapest they have been in decades. You can prob thank Microsoft for that. This thread isnt meant to knock PS5 and its value, but rather to give perspective to those that think the $399 discless PS5 is better deal than the $299 XSS or $499 XSX.

The $299 XSS is underpowered (but still solid) but thats the point. Its targeted at budget minded folks or those that could care less about 4k. It also serves as a cheap secondary system, and a competitor to Switch. The true next gen systems are XSX and PS5, PS5 happens to offer a discless option for $100 less, but is it really saving you money in the long run? How many games can you afford to actually play on it?

Lets take a look at a theoretical 1 year cost for both systems:
  • $399 discless PS5 + 5 first party titles + 1yr PS network $60 = $810
  • $499 XSX + 5 first party titles + 1yr gamepass ultimate = $620 ($601 if you use all access financing which is zero down)
keep in mind the $620 you pay for XSX gets you hundreds of titles spanning gamepass and EA access, whereas your $810 on PS5 gets you what you only the 5 games you paid for (not counting the free games given on both services).

5 first party titles most people would want in year 1:
Sony: Demon Souls, Miles Morales, God of War, Ratchet, Horizon Zero
Microsoft: Halo Infinite, Hellblade, Forza Motorsport 8, Fable, Everwild

More points to consider
  • Aside from this you get a disc tray with XSX which means you can buy and trade used games saving you more money. 3rd party games like COD, Watch Dogs Legion, Cyberpunk, Need for Speed etc could be traded once purchased on XSX, not on discless PS5.
  • XSX is more powerful and there is a good chance 3rd party games will look and run better, so there is that.
  • Lets not forget the XSX while $100 more, gets you a vastly superior BC model spanning thousands of titles across 3 generations, many of which are enhanced with 4x resolution and 2x FPS. On PS5, you get about 30 PS4 titles announced so far....
  • Also, you get Xcloud which is included for free with gamepass ultimate, you get to play a large library of top rated titles on your mobile device adding even more value.

Bottomline, you will spend a lot more gaming on PS5, so don't let the $100 savings on a discless PS5 be the main reason you go with Sony, because in the bigger picture you spend much more and get much less. Obviously most gamers will go where their favorite games are, but if you are torn then this is something to consider.

Personally, I will get a 3000 series GPU, an XSX on launch with zero down and use gamepass to continue my games in my bedroom when im not at my desk. A PS5 for me perhaps when God of War and Horizon come out.
Honestly I feel that when Sony drops the disco version to 450$ it's the sweet spot for ps5 because the DE would be at 350$ still not as bad as people rumored them to be

I really hated Nintendo rising the controller prices cause I was worried it would become a trend. I hope all of this price increasing back fires to hell.

Edit: The replies to this thread shows why Fanboyisim is bad, and why Sony can do this, this also applies to the whole Mario 3D all stars.

Wow thanks for showing me the light OP. With all these "educational" threads popping up I can't decide if I should switch to PC or to Xbox. This is going to be tough.

The DS series literally goes on sale at least once a month on these storefronts and can be had for $10-$25 give or take.

Those storefronts thrive off the Steam-like sales.

I don't know how frequent those sales are, like yeah Bloodborne and first party titles drop like a rock, but Dark Souls 3 was right there at 59.99 featured what four years after release third parties won't be dumb about this. And how many days do those sales last there isn't a guarantee you will find a game significantly cheaper years after release, kinda like forcing Nintendo games 🤔

I’m telling you, I see it go on sale once a month at least and it usually lasts up to two weeks when they do those sales sometimes longer. I’ve been almost pulling the trigger on the game every other month, I just don’t have time to play it right now.

They have sales frequently on the digital store fronts and prices dip pretty regularly, it’s nothing like a Nintendo situation, they are a different animal.

who cares i don’t get any fun buying mediocre cheap games. Ps5 is where I Will get my most fun out of video games.i could not care less for MS offerings and getting their games for free subscribing to gamepass. flying over anyones house must be exhilarating.

I dont like all these silly stipulations that i have seen people start adding into discussion to prove a certain point of view.
Fact is XSX and PS5 are $499, PS5D is $399, and XSS is $299. Imo very fair prices for each and every console. No one will feel done over with any of these consoles, and thats not always been the case with new consoles.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is one of the most amazing games ive ever played. When hurricane laura was hitting the US, I flew right above it. Ive also flown over my actual house in the game. You can keep your clunky redundant remake lol

And here you were calling other people fanboys?

You're really convincing people of whatever point you were trying to make in the OP. I think I'm almost there.

I find it hilarious all the cost gymnastics people are doing considering people we're apparently ready to pay 600 dollars for a console lmao.

I am fully entrenched in digital and then the $70 game price made me say nope and I went disc. Demon's souls alone makes the PS5 the console for me. Halo was pushed back so I am sad panda with MS right now.

Sorry, but your argument is down right moronic.

What gaming enthusiast in their right mind would prioritize cost above the games. By your logic, I should avoid next gen entirely and stop by Walmart on the way home for the Atari Flashback 9. It comes with 120 games preloaded for $50.

The Xbox Series X with 5 games at $610 divided by the time each of these games would keep my attention (30 seconds each) - The Xbox would cost me $4 a second until it was put away in the closet never to be seen again.

The same formula applied to the Atari Flashback 9 - $50 for the console with 120 games, 30 seconds per game, that is only a per second cost of $0.013 before I put the console away in the closet never to be seen again.

Xbox fans are in maximum AstroTurf mode today for some reason.

I get OP's point here. However most folks determine Sony will have the better quality exclusives next gen. People will pay for better quality.

Here's the catch though. A new gen, with new studios involved and new deals being made with 3rd pt developers mean that the odds might not be as skewed in Sony's favor as one might assume.

I'm keeping my eyes open, but ultimately I appreciate the fact that Xbox All Access makes the financial burden a bit easier to own both consoles...in 2021...when it'll be worth it to purchase either.

For Now, the 3080 drops tomorrow so...yea that's I'm getting.

Why not go Xbox One S and Game Pass for cross-gen goodness? Or maybe a used 360?

Gamepass will raise drastically in price or go away all together when the 70 dollar next gen standard gets established? Do y'all honestly think xbox is going to eat a price increase?

Sony can afford the higher price because they have more unique titles. What does anyone want with an Xbox Series X if they already have a good gaming PC? I don't want to take sides, but in the current generation Sony has had the better lineup by far. It wasn't even close or anything, it was just humiliating for MS.

This is why I'm going Digital. I primarily play on PC but Sony has games that interest me more. I don't tend to sell their exclusives as I normally revist them later on anyway.

OP Your forgetting that the XSS proprietary SSDs will cost almost as much as the system itself. While the PS5 NVMe SSD will initially be expensive but the Price will come down overtime.
$399 PS5 is the value king.

Since you wanna be sly and add in subscription services. Calculate the hundreds of dollars of value you get from all the games added to the PS Plus Collection versus the B tier games you find on gamepass.

Quality is subjective, the post is just rational facts.

This is a content preference. But without a subscription service, It's highly likely that in the long-term Sony gamers will be paying increasingly more over Xbox gamers. I expect the prices of traditional purchases to rise faster than subscription services.

I do expect that PS platform in the long term will become an increasingly hardcore demographic as that demographic are 'whales' whereas Xbox will become a more mainstream, casual demographic, based on next gen consoles. This looks to be the case.

But based on the reaction of Sony upping the prices, it's becoming increasingly obvious that the AAA industry is not sustainable in any form.

Literally who was this the main reason for a decision? You get a PS5 because of what it enables you to run, you get an Xbox because of what it enabls you to run, each has price tiers within it

because in the bigger picture you spend much more and get much less.

So subjective. Are actual games I want to play "Less"?
