At the moment Microsoft are given the public a large choice on how they play their games. You can sign up for Gamepass, buy the games as a digital purchase (in some cases even on Steam on PC) or even buy physical copies. However, what if that were to change and Gamepass was the only way?

Think about it. Take away the option to buy these games outright and make it so they can only be played with an active Gamepass sub and people would then have little choice if they want to keep playing these games. They would have people subbed for life!

I personally could see Microsoft going down this route. What do you think? Do you think buying games is an archaic and outdated concept?

According to your screenname you've got all the weapons AND keys, can you not easily Keycard your way into the MS HQ and then hold them hostage with a BFG until they tell you their plans?

You'd be doing us all a favour here.

No, I think you are missing one of the hooks of Gamepass, which is that some games eventually leave the service. The idea is to rotate the game out of the Gamepass and offer you to buy it at a discount. That's why even while it's on Gamepass you have an option to buy it.

then no retail shops would sell their consoles.

Yeah imagine having like a £20 profit margin on selling a XSX and then you don't get the 30% cut from each game on top of that, if a shop assistant spent an hour helping someone decide to buy it then thats probably all the margin accounted for. Completely pointless for them to do that as you say, the saleman would be told to start tripling down on the fake-insurance/"careplan" stuff and it would be an even more miserable experience to shop there.

How the fuck did you come to that conclusion?! Seriously? MS is the most open publisher, it’s all about CHOICE. They allow you to play ALL their games on PC, Xbox, Android and maybe some day on iOS.
they are even releasing their new games on Xbox ONE still
Why do you think they would go this route?
Doesn’t make any sense.

If they want to stay in the hardware business they should maintain exclusivity. If they want to become netflix for games, they're gonna need to become platform agnostic.

Bad example since it made more money on Disney+ than it did in theaters.

Hmm didn't ready that, but after looking into it I have my doubts. Sounds like they are guessing it did well based on some serious questionable math. Saying that 29% of all US subscribers rented it at $30 bucks seems extremely generous.

Now it's about choice, but they want to be the Netflix of gaming right?

Can I purchase Stranger Things or The Witcher on Netflix? Nope.

Can I purchase The Boys from Amazon as a digital download? Nope.

The reason I cannot is because Amazon and Netflix want to keep me locked in. They want me to keep paying that sub.

Now if Microsoft did the same, especially with a huge game like the Elder Scrolls, then people would be locked in for life. To ensure they are locked in, make the games exclusive to Gamepass and give everyone six months free when they buy an XSX. Once that six months is up, people are going to have a considerable number of MS first party titles that would disappear unless they paid into Gamepass.

fucking stunning plan

Not a viable business plan, Gamepass cannot offset the cost of producing these games and won't be able to do so for at least 10 years even if it picks up.

no and frankly im stunned so many people want to rent their game library.

Habits are changing. I think this could be the last generation where purchasing games is an option. Soon it'll be subscription models for streaming and downloads and that's it.

It definitely won’t be. Maybe it will be the last gen with physical media, but there will still be purchases, they will just be digital.

Nope PC gamers like steam, if games not there might as well not exist to many. Epic learning that the hard way.

im not a fan of the pc app but with the big dick moves Xbox is making I’m in for the long haul.

Lmao, Jesus Christ, no! Give your fan base choices. Especially in a world where not every customer is going to have access to decent internet. I mean, I know it sounds crazy, but those people still exist. Plus you don't want to alienate other potential sales.

Works fine for Netflix. They don't give people a choice. If you want to watch the Witcher of another Netflix original then you have to sign up for a Netflix sub.

Except you can purchase Blurays of those shows and own them without even having the service. It is true it several months after the show was released, but you have the option.

There will always be people who can't do streaming or downloads.

It's a completely different kind of media, entertainment, industry. I get what you're saying, I just don't see that really working out in a number of ways.

They don't even make their games exclusive to their own store on PC, they give players options on where to purchase and play their titles, even on specific platforms.

They want as many people funneling money into their accounts bin as possible. Forcing Gamepass down people's throats won't make people rush to adopt it. Instead they're slowly nudging everyone to the same destination and looking like the good guys while doing it.

Wouldnt that go against their play how you want to play, where you want to play it mantra? Just saying....
Em no, because Gamepass is on Console & PC... Xcloud on mobile too, it's only not on Playstation and Nintendo. Hilarious to see how the "muh exclusives" crowd have quickly changed opinion after yesterday.

Fuck Sony and Nintendo, MS need to be brutal and make them exclusive or at least times exclusive for a year, day one game pass or $70 up to you gamers

I am voting Yes under the condition that if they want to release on other consoles, maybe that is one of the stipulations of Switch/Sony owners.

I am not implying put their games on PlayStation.

Microsoft puts their pc games on Steam, Windows Store etc...

Making all of their games only Gamepass would go against play the games you want on the device you want mantra they have been preaching. I am not saying open it up to console rivals, but pc is a big market for them.

It makes sense for them if what they really care is about gamepass, i doubt that gamepass would be making them enough money to recoup those 7500 Millions they invested, but maybe they just want to corner the marke at the Amazon style.
Gotta wait and see, it matters very little what we think is right for the industry if we keep jumping at every deal that looks cheaper. The production of games it's just gonna adapt to the most succesful model and not the other way around.

I don't see them going down this route. To me, it more looks like Microsoft wants to be a powerhouse publisher, even going so far as to put their IPs on rival consoles. They don't seem eager to close off the games to a walled garden, even if they are flexing gamepass as the next big thing.

Awful idea that will not happen.

I got you, just misunderstood the context of the OP's question. I agree, not exclusive to Gamepass is a good thing and they should stick to what they've been preaching.

No. Ability to purchase digitally on Xbox Series X/Xbox Series S/PC and Windows Store. Disc for Xbox Series X. And Game Pass as well. More options, the better.

Good way to kill the games industry.
People are shortsighted what a subscription based future could look like but this something MS will do 100%. I bet they already have a timeline and plan how to do it too. At first it will be some games timed exclusive to gamepass then take the next step and so on.

Wouldnt that go against their play how you want to play, where you want to play it mantra? Just saying....
You actually believe that? The naivety in this thread.
People really dont understand how huge corporations operate.

Would that be more or less profitable?
Is it more or less profitable for Sony to release their games exclusive to PS5 and maybe release them later on PC?
Replace Sony and PS5 with MS and gamepass because thats how you should view it.
