Don’t read too much into the PS4’s million day-one sales

A strong launch is nice, but it doesn't necessarily imply long-term success.

Launch aligned or even in total sales PS4 broke many records for home console history. Selling consoles, selling games. Even with game subscriptions, in users, in revenue, in profit. In mostly everything. And if not it's a close 2nd being PS2 on top of it.

As an example, it had the best launch selling a million consoles on day one, 4.2M in a month and a half and ~7M in the first ~4 months and a half, until the end if their 1st fiscal year. And ~14M on its first full year.

Having Miles Morales, Demon's Souls, Cyberpunk, Sackboy, AC Vallhalla, CoD Cold War, Watchdogs, Godfall, Devil May Cry V Special Edition and so on, in addition to the dozen or so of great PS4 games included in the PS5 PS+ collection at launch and BC with boost mode, plus games coming for its first year like Ratchet & Clank, Horizon 2, Returnal, God of War 2 and maybe Gran Turismo 7 plus timed exclusives in the horizon like Final Fantasy VII Remake episode 2 and Final Fantasy XVI, do you think PS5 is going to outsell these PS4 numbers?

How do you think it compares to the launch lineup of Series X and their announced games or its first year? What big games are going to move Xbox Series X and Game Pass at launch and the during first year?

Do you think PS5 are going to continue their lead of selling the double or more units than Xbox? Do you think Series X or Game Pass is going to block that? If so, since the start or maybe will start to doing it on late 2022 or 2023, once MS starts releasing their non crossgen console exclusives?

I expect Sony to win out in the end by a decent margin, just not this gens levels. Sony has shown every generation to bring it with it's first party lineup, much like Nintendo, and that's why they have been at the top. Regardless of what happens with 3rd party titles and other out of their hands control they will have the best or 2nd best behind Nintendo 1st party selection.

Hell, with how connected we all are they could bring back both Twisted Metal and Socom/MAG with a heavy online/GaaS model and both would likely be extremely successful in this environment we are in.

No one should be surprised when Sony sells more PlayStation Consoles than Microsoft sells XBox Consoles.

But everyone seems to forget that Microsoft publishes Game Pass and Games also on PC and Mobile Phones (xCloud) which gives Microsoft right from the start a potential Userbase of 150 Million PC's and 1.500.000 Trillion Mobile Phones Sorry, I don't know how many Android Mobile Phones are on this Planet

Unless the PS5 has some RROD-like design flaw, yes, I expect the console to break a lot of sales records. They've done a great job of not shitting the bed with the PS4's 'final' year, so confidence in the PS5 is extremely high.

Yes PS5 will continue to dominate but Xbox will be closer this gen. I believe many people are going to buy a PS5 and a Series S Game Pass box. Solid back up plan for MS if the Series X struggles against the PS5. MS buying studios helps but that will die down in a month or two until we start seeing actual games from those studios.

Microsoft has the money, sony doesn't. I see them in big trouble in the coming years. Zenimax purchase by Microsoft is huge. Next year E3 will be huge for Microsoft with all the studios that they have. Sony need to act and act fast, they need to spend money on new aquisitions. They need to make a big effort to try and buy Square Enix.

Sony was an inch away for totally decimating Microsoft this gen, and while the Zenimax acquisition has managed to give potential buyers some possibly exclusive games in a couple of years that might be worth owning the console for, I really don't think it's enough to really make a dent on the PS marketshare. At the end of the day, don't think a timed exclusive fallout 5 and elder scrolls is enough to compete with tons of true exclusives not coming to any other platforms including pc.

These people are invested in the ecosystem, own tons of games, and will probably go to PS5 unless Microsoft can find a way to make them jump ship... And frankly , don't think a subscription model and a couple bethesda games is enough to make people switch sides.

In the beginning of the generation - yes. After 1-2 years, the truly better console (hardware and software wise) will start selling more and more.

That's not the point. The question is will the PS5 keep breaking records. I say no. I don't see a scenario where the PS5 sells more than the Switch or PS4 next gen.

First of all, Microsoft is much more competitive with great consoles from a specs or price prospective and Gamepass. Besides, even if Sony will have the edge early on, I expect the big MS acquisitions to start making an impsct in 2022/23. So sales could be closer than expected.

Secondly, the best seller in town is Nintendo and it's not even close. The Switch will probably sell 26 to 28 millions units this fiscal year. You can expect another 23 to 25 million next year with Breath of the Wild 2 and the Switch Pro. No way Sony can match those numbers.

Thirdly, I doubt Sony will be able to produce enough console to satisfy the hardcore gamers that will rush to the console the first 6 to 9 months. It took 9 months for the PS4 and Switch to reach 10 million units sold. I expect the PS5 in that ball park, but nothing record breaking.

Finally, with the predominance of Crossgen, there is not any urgency to move to next gen for casuals. Not only you can play Miles Morales ou Horizon 2 on PS4, but you don't need to pay the 10$ Next Gen tax.

This will be the longest generation ever. New SSDs and much more powerful CPUs will keep developers happy for a long time. The only problem might be the Series S holding things back at the tail end of the generation.
