Among Us 2 Canceled for More Among Us

Among Us Will Essentially Become Among Us 2

Not many games can claim to go from being forgotten to becoming a sleeper international hit to a summer sensation two years post launch, but Among Us has managed to do that. Not many games force the cancelation of their sequel so that developers can continue improving the first game, but Among Us has managed that as well.

Why is Among Us 2 Canceled?

Among Us 2 is canceled because of the success in all markets that Among Us has seen. Since July saw Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris stream Among Us on the recommendation of Twitch employee Pluto, the game has gone from being an international hit in South Korea and Mexico, primarily on smart phones, to being one of the top-selling games on Steam as places like the U.S. have begun picking up the game en masse.

This caused developer Innersloth to review everything again, as things kept getting bigger and bigger, and decide that instead of doing a sequel, they would rework Among Us with better servers, code base, and new features. In their post they explain the following:
Us devs have had several long discussions about what we want to do with the game. When do we stop working on Among Us 1? What content goes into Among Us 2? The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it. We have lots of things planned and we’re excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing!
It will take time for them to rework all the stuff they are looking at adding, especially given it is going to require redoing some of the core code for Among Us, but it means new Among Us content is also on the way.

What New Among Us Content is Coming?

Everything discussed for Among Us 2 is coming to Among Us 1 now which means:
  • A goal of 12-15 Player games with 3 Imposters
  • Matchmaking to better support custom modes and skill levels
  • Better moderations and anti-cheat
  • More roles
Before all of that Among Us 2 content arrives in Among Us over the long term, the shorter term Among Us roadmap includes content that they've announced today is on the horizon:
  • Improved Servers
  • Friends/Account System
  • A New Stage (early in development), that will be Henry Stickmin themed
  • Colorblind support so players like the author can play the game without worrying about properly identifying who is who.
The Among Us 2 cancellation may be the best thing for Among Us as a healthy player base is maintained, and the game can sustain itself with the large player base on cosmetics and other ongoing sales as people are truly enjoying the game and like looking cool in multiplayer games. That said, remember that the new Among Us content promised here will take time to come to the game.

I'll be surprised if the game survives for very long. It is very one dimensional. I have had a few hours of fun with it with a group of friends but I don't think we will play it anymore, it just isn't the kind of game you can play for a very long time. I expect it to blow over quite quickly.
Tell that to Streamers, this game has taken over Twitch.

If that's the case then it will almost certainly not be as relevant in a year's time as it is now.

Streamers go where the wind blows.
How does that contradict what I said?
This time it seems different, its not like Apex legends or Valorant. It's already long outlasted the spike those games had. They seem to genuinely love it and there's depths to the game that you won't find unless you play it the way they do. I think it'll be around for a while especially if they can get timely updates out which might be where they fail since there's apparently only one programmer working on the game.

Sure it might happen, but I myself think that it won't have the lasting power.

I'm surprised this game got so much attention recently, I swear this same concept was around many years ago as a...mod for counter-strike, I guess? Something about one being a killer and the others trying to catch/kill him?

Also, there was one other game that's even more similar to Among Us, with different classes and random tasks, I remember it because Jim Sterling played it

I guess the main reason for his success is because it looks pretty and people can kill friendships with it

Been watching people play this on Twitch.

It's like a reality show and a soap opera in one. Drama, questionable decisions, arguments, treachery, murder...all wrapped in a deceptively simple little package. It's at its best when the group knows each other and they have a past together.

You can expect a wave of clones in a few months, of that I'm sure.

There is a very fine Starcraft 2 mod that is based around the movie Thing. I played it a lot way back. It was basically a zombie survival with the twist that one person could transform to the Thing monster. So you ran around a base, built turrets, barricades, stocked up on grenades, flamer fuel etc. while at the same time trying to figure out who is the Thing and fighting an endless swarm of zombies. You were also leveling up and could get all kinds of abilities. It is a very fun mod.

You could be thinking of the "Murder'" gametype in Gmod. It's a very similar concept and super fun, been around for years.

Also not quite the same but Town of Salem is pretty similar too and I personally find it way more interesting since it focuses far more on the "talking to each other" aspect of the game

The crazy thing to me is that this feels like pure happenstance that the game got popular. The concept has been around in a lot of different forms over the years. More than anything it just speaks to the power of streamers, if it hadn't been picked up on twitch it clearly would never have had the spike of players and interest. I'd be curious to see if it's possible to trace back who the first person to do a big stream of this was that got all the eyes on it in the first place

Game really is a lot of fun, especially when you're playing with a group of friends. It's still wild that it took a couple of years for it to take off, but that's how it goes.

I just wish there would be something like this but more mature and scary, haha.

It's thrilling if you're trying to shit on your friends, I was the Impostor for a straight 7 times in our 10-man mates rounds a few nights ago.
Serious amount of bantz. Wouldn't play it with randos though.

I remember playing that mod years ago.

The same thing that makes Avalon/the resistance and secret Hitler so attractive applies here so this game will be popular for a long time. It's a good idea to work on the existing version and not split the playerbase.

What is the appeal to this? Isn't this just werewolf the game?

It's simple, snappy, games happen quick, easy to get into and hard to master. Arguing with people as to what they have seen, remembered from previous rounds of voting and general banter is fun.
It has hats too!

People in this thread getting a little nervous a multiplayer game made by 3 people in 24 months is more popular than most (all?) linear single player AAA games that take hundreds of people 4+ years to make.

You love to see it.

I'm so glad you mentioned this. I loved this mod so much. Pig sticking corpses to the environment to freak out the soldiers was such a blast.

I hope they don't sink too much money into trying to evolve a trend.
I mean, I'd welcome it, at least in this situation. I'm just curious to see what they plan on doing and how.

Hope this and Fall guys die fast , both absolute boring trash after a few hours.

Really though, I have much more respect for Among Us and Fall Guys than every other survival and battle royale title out there. Not to mention it's always cool to see small teams take risks and put their ideas out there only to receive huge success.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean that it is also great. McDonald's is arguably the most popular restaurant in the U.S., but you wouldn't say that the food is better than a high-end restaurant just because more people eat there.

This ain't the food industry. What we choose to spend out time with speaks volumes.

The amount of laughter, joy, excitement, and intensity a game like Among Us produces makes it a truly brilliant game.

The amount of laughter, joy, excitement, and intensity games like TLoU2, RDR2, GoW produces makes them pretty mediocre in my book.

Fulfilling the basic need for food with products that are addictive is not equivalent to snubbing a fun game to play a fun game.

Is there a GAF community for this game? I'd like to buy it but I don't have people to play it with. Seems like it's more fun with a persistent group + voice chat.

Just wanted to report, lads. Among Us has currently some 43 thousand players, which is still incredibly impressive for such a small game but my prediction came true, the game is slowly fading into the background again. It had a good run and I am glad it appeared but the idea that this will be the new BIG THING was kind of ridiculous.
