Inti Creates has announced Gal Gun Returns for Xbox One, Switch, and PC (Steam). In Japan and Asia, it will launch for Xbox One and Switch on January 28, 2021, and PC via Steam in February 2021 for 5,800 yen. In the west, it will launch for all three platforms in 2021 via publisher PQube. The Xbox One and PC versions will be available digitally worldwide, while the Switch version will be available both physically and digitally.

In Japan, the Switch version will also be available in a 9,800 yen limited edition, which includes a 100-page memorial art book featuring illustrations and more from every game in the Gal Gun series, a vocal album featuring all the vocal tracks from Gal Gun Returns (including the newly recorded theme songs), and a special box with exclusive packaging. Pre-orders for either edition include a scented Kaname Nonomiya bookmark.

Gal Gun Returns is a remastered version of the original Gal Gun, which first launched for Xbox 360 in January 2011 in Japan, followed by PlayStation 3 with additional characters and PlayStation Move support in February 2012. This is the first time the original Gal Gun will release in the west.

What's Gal-Gun? Why no PS version?

Sony's conspicuous absence, along with their content-policy shenanigans and seeming desire to be the place for premium experiences, makes it hard not to draw certain conclusions, even with this being only the dawn of a new hardware generation.

As for the game itself, I'd have been more interested in a new franchise entry. Guess we'll see, whether this stands as a portent for the coming console cycle.

Somewhat related, Inti Create's Bloodstained 2 also currently only has a next-gen version announced for Xbox One. Makes me wonder about Microsoft and Sony's potential relationship with smaller developers.

No Playstation? I hope that's a sign Japanese developers start giving Sony the finger about censorship.

That is very strange. Thing is, Japanese games sell way better on PlayStation and the Switch than Xbox. Not sure if it will be censored on Xbox or not, but it will probably get way less sales though.
Guess we’ll see what happens.

Nice! Never thought I'd see such a game on Xbox. DOAX2 on 360 seems to be the last (make both games BC already MS)

The Xbox One era has certainly been a different beast, but the original version of this remaster was a XB360 title, later ported to PS3. Not that Gal Gun is some amazing franchise, but hopefully this is further sign Microsoft is again seriously trying to work with Japanese developers.

Didn't know that! And yes, I hope MS keeps working with Japanese devs, more variety is always good.

Yeah, it worked out so well for Omega Labyrinth.

Maybe someday there will be Gal Gun Returns for PlayStation 4/5 but well be renamed Gal Gun REEEturns where instead of shooting Pheromone Arrows, you be shouting some Female Empowerment quotes.

Oh, I forgot about that. That’s on the Switch though which are also a big threat when it comes to Japanese support. I think the Senran Kagura developers had issues as well with Sony and the 7th installment is up in the air I think. The day when an XBOX Japanese game sells admirably well or very comparable to the PlayStation version is when Sony might want to really reevaluate their inconsistent censorship policy. They could end up losing some favoritism or even support from Japanese developers. They definitely don’t want that because that’s one of their huge advantages.

When Soyny became so prudish, anyway? After taking HQ to California, or before that? it would be really funny to see japanese people give middle finger to ps5 and to see xbsbxox outsell it (it most likely won't happen but..)

It's 2008 again when Xbox got the niche Japanese games over Playstation. But this time, there's no Cell hardware/$599 price tag to blame it on.

For real nostalgia, lets see if Team Ninja joins the bandwagon and makes only Xbox games again.

If you follow the censorship thread at all, we know exactly why this isn't coming to playstation. They pissed off half the japanese companies with their nonsense censorship "Think of the children".

I'm a big Sony fan, but this may be my final gen for them for a while, cause the decisions that Sony of America have made since moving offices to here have all been terrible in regards to alot of things, but I'm not gonna pretend that it's enough this gen to miss out on all the exclusives and sequels that are only on their platform. Gotta hope the censor pendulum swings back quickly.

This won't be the title though, as these kinds of games just don't sell on Xbox platforms. I'll likely grab it on the Switch since that is apparently my new Japanese game console.

It was after the move to CA. Can't be there without being forced into the cult of no personality that these types of morons enjoy. I don't see Japan turning on them, the titles that are getting censored just aren't big enough deals YET, but these do end up selling well on the Switch which is obviously bigger in Japan so I think it's a case of it just not seeming like a big deal at the moment. You don't want to piss off too many of these japanese companies so they consider some of the Xbox deals when they have all been Sony franchises in the past.

I see original and sequel all the time on discounts on PS store.

It's literally "moaning shooter". Probably super uncomfortable if anyone else is in the house.

Quite surprising Xbox got a version over Sony, probably has to do with the censorship.

Also interesting that the original released on Xbox first in Japan then again Xbox had somewhat of a presence back in the day even if it was still quite small.

Anyway, I had a surprising amount of fun with Gal Gun 2 on Switch so i'll probably pick this up.

I hate japanese game trailers.

They always show those stupid waifus to attract pathetic weebs and never show any real gameplay. Same as looking for screens/info on google images. Only artworks, waifus, more artwork...

Because they're the market for these games?

Chad and dudebro aren't going to switch over from COD or Gears of War, no matter how much they try.

It's sad that more and more indie & Japanese devs are going to be moving away from the PS5 in the upcoming years. If I look at my PS4 library at least half of the games I've played are non-AAA projects.

They should be applauded for daring to go against Sony by not supporting PlayStation 5.

New girls, a new school. Good.
I have GalGun2 on Switch, it's technically very good, like it's painted. Very funny game, very replayable. It's a pity you can't play it with just one hand.

The funniest part about was that D3Publisher went out of their way to mock Sony and their censorship policy:
