Not really.

Demon's Souls and Ratchet and Clank are the only next gen games at launch, and this will be for a while. But you have to remember that Demon's Souls is the same game we know more than a decade ago, just with a different skin, and Ratchet and Clank is fun, but not a big deal. Everyone will be playing third party games on the next gen console that are going to launch on past gen consoles, and they're not that good in comparison with it.

Everyone was expecting that Halo Infinite was the true next gen game. Was going to be the greatest thing since the original game on the original Xbox... than it wasn't, and is never going to be because of what everyone saw. It was the best move to delay, still, it was about the "lesser evil" than the real thing.

Also, for Playstation dumb fanboys, God of War still is not confirmed as a real PS5 game. Could even be a PS4 game launched exclusively for PS5. Just the developers know this shit, so don't bitch about it
Ratchet is a 2021 game not a launch game.

2021. If we assume that "launch window" is the first year, it should make that no problem. Besides, I think we could see Hellblade launch in that timespan as well. And maybe Forza?
In this page Forza and Hellbade 2 doesn't have the 'Smart Delivery' and 'Dual Gen' (crossgen) checks, and there isn't XBO logo or mention on their website or recent trailer, which means they aren't crossgen:

They said that during the first couple of years of Series X the MS games would be cross-gen. So it means Hell Blade 2 and the next Forza (and others like State of Decay 3, Fable, Everwild or Avowed) will be released late November 2022 or later.

I think the thread title does not need too much explanation for the informed gamer. However lets refresh on the thought process. For every console launch we've become accustomed to console manufacturers competing against each other very hard to release the best first party software at launch. They do this in an effort to differentiate from the competition to sell the box. Unfortunately, with the Xbox Series S/X from MS; this will be the first time we see a departure from said practice. If gamers reward the practice by purchasing the box without levying the proper criticism at the manufacturer (and/or hitting them were it hurts - the purse) I personally think this sets a wrong precedent that other industry players may try to emulate in their search for higher profit margins - in other words - to coast and do as little as possible for maximum return. Considering the console industry is an oligopoly of only 3 established players (Nintendo/Sony/MS) the options for gamers are few when they all lower standards in search for profit by copying each other.

Due to poor studio management, and putting all eggs into the Halo: Infinite basket MS is finding itself releasing its next-gen family of consoles without a big AAA first party game. This is a stark contrast to the competition in Sony, that's is releasing the console with multiple AAA first party titles. But more revealing of different culture and values is Nintendo's management and approach when faced with similar circumstances after the failed console life-cycle of the Wii U. What I mean by that is that Nintendo delayed releasing the very popular Nintendo Switch only until it had Zelda: Breath of the Wild ready (a big AAA first party exclusive), despite the Wii U affording them little time to get ready (while facing all sorts of investor pressure to completely change the company's business model). In other words, Nintendo respected and was fearful of their fans expectations, of industry expectations and as such only released when truly ready on both the hardware and software front - despite enormous pressure. Microsoft however is releasing the console without a care for such expectations - and instead trying to shift the attention to other areas. This is of course smart marketing but not necessarily great for gamers as a whole. This is a stark contrast to Microsoft own past with the Xbox 360 under Peter Moore, or Xbox One's launch under Matrick which saw AAA exclusives like Forza Motorsports, Killer Instinct etc.

Regardless of whether you're a PlayStation, Nintendo, or PC only fan (with no interest whatsoever in ever buying an Xbox console), this dynamic should concern you for one big reason. These companies compete against each other and try to emulate each other on any area of success (as defined by them - profit). In other words, not only do they copy what a gamer could consider "best practices", BUT also the bad practices (as long as it fattens their bottom-line). It may look to a gamer like a bad practice to paywall online MP access (Xbox Live and PS Plus) but to these companies it's just another profit play. Doing less for more, or simply doing less for the same - in both instances, if rewarded by hardcore games, only increases shareholder value for these companies for little to no gain to the consumer (gamer).

Do you fear that this will set the wrong industry precedent if rewarded across the board for other industry players like Sony and Nintendo?
Do you care at all despite having no intention of buying an Xbox console?
If you're an Xbox fan do you think hardcore fans as yourself are doing enough to let Microsoft know this is unacceptable to you? Or do you simply don't care?
Is this a reason why you're switching (as a now former Xbox fan) to competing platforms this coming gen and thus that is your way of voting with your wallet (making your voice heard)?
Should Microsoft have done as Nintendo, and delayed launch until both the hardware and software (in this case) was ready?

Feel free to opine.
Terrible , absolutely asinine phrasing of the choices OP. You basically have FUD option 1, FUD option 2 and just a little less FUD option 3. Obvious FUD post poll a Sony fanboy.

How do we feel about Xbox: 1. Hate them a lot OR 2. Hate them much OR 3. Hate them a little bit......about right Knitted Knight Knitted Knight ?

I don't care, gimme Cyberpunk 2077, that's all I care about at launch.
Regarding myself, I don't need a system seller game... I have already chosen the system I want to play on for many other reasons. :messenger_beaming:

As far as I remember the phrase was uttered in 2019 and was something like "couple of years". I absolutely believe, that in a year or so, we will start seeing next-gen only games from Microsoft.

edit:

Also, on that list, Ori doesn't show as "dual gen", which seems rather odd, considering it's already released.

It's a rather damning endictment of their management's and particularly 343i's competency, but it's not like there's no games, or that we don't know more are coming.

Lack of launch exclusives shouldn't mean the console is bad or not worth it. Exclusives will come down the line. At launch there are a number of titles to play.

You're not wrong.

I truly think at this point, with Halo's problems, Msft are hoping to coast the next eighteen months or so on GamePass and third party. Whether this strategy is successful or not, we'll have to wait and see. I see no reason why it wouldn't keep things ticking along nicely for them, but I also don't see it having much of an impact on Sony's dominance in the first part of the generation.

Ori is a backwards compatible game, meaning there is no specific Series X version. The version you play on Series X is the XBO one.

Dual gen (so cross gen games) means they have a different version of the game for each generation.

After so many billion dollars spent you would expect xbox to have some exclusives. And i mean the aquition of ninja theory etc, not bethesda.
On the other hand, their new strategy may mean that everything will be released everywhere except maybe for GoW and Halo.

Spider man, horizon 2 and who knows what else are also cross gen. In terms of quality ? I find every MGS game to be trash so I don’t even understand what that means. Next gen resolution ? I have been playing AAA native 4k games for quite a while on the Xbox one x, though I get why the concept might be new to ps-only gamers.
My god are you serious. For every cross-gen game on PS there is a next-gen game.
Spider-Man : Demon's
Horizon : Ratchet
God of War (maybe) : Gran Turismo

When I said quality I meant visuals. Halo did not and will not deliver here.
Demon's Souls does. So does Ratchet. It's that easy.
So MS does not only not deliver a next-gen experience day one. It's not gonna deliver one until Fall 2021 at least.
That's assuming Forza comes out then or Hellblade.

Enjoy a whole year of cross-gen games lmao.

Unless you mean everywhere as in PS5 too... Good luck with that :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It shows bad management, but also rushing games to hit a console launch has always been brutal.

Now that consoles are backwards compatible, I'd much rather wait a few months post-launch for a great game, than to launch with a half-baked good game. I don't think it would really stop me pre-ordering so long as it offered some substantial upgrades on current gen stuff.

We need more AA titles like Ridge Racer again, which show the graphical improvement without needing years in development.

Halo will probably arrive 6 months after launch (give or take), and after that we might see the next big releases "Holidays 2021". But yes, 3rd party and GP needs keep the momentum going for in the short term.

Wouldn't that fit Forza Horizon 4 and Grounded, as well?

The ascent, scorn, the medium, gears tactics to name few are coming to Xbox series x during launch window, in addition there are “remasters” (Xbox series x enhanced games) like gears 5 and forza horizon 4 that will get a proper next gen patches beyond standard bc. There seems to be couple interesting AA/indie games launching on the console launch day.

Yeah, fair point. Halo probably is a bit closer, and will be their big tent pole game for those first few months and years.

The Xbox’s biggest pull is going to be if it can run third party games a lot better than Ps5. That’d probably tip the balance more than anything. Early adopters will always just go for the platform they favour, whatever the comparison, but those buying after six months to a year can be easily swayed if one console looks markedly better than the other.

Again, we don’t know how any of this will pan out, but Msft will be content to bob along with the status quo if needs be, if they know they have big guns waiting in two years.

I will, much better than paying 80€ for «next gen» experiences like the demon’s souls remake. Oh and I didn’t know that GT is coming in 2021 and will be ps5 exclusive, thanks for the info.

If people had not made fun of the visuals, the game would be launch ready. They delayed it to make it look better, change? every asset with HQ ones and polish it a bit more and if time allows it, add more content, fix things.

Else they would have it released it unfinished like Grounded and would fix it over time. Halo will not launch within 6 month (Holiday 2021).

Yes, both games are current gen games, released while ago when Series X didn't exist. So shouldn't count as 'dual gen'/crossgen.

They aren't crossgen games released with the next gen console or later with different game SKUs for both consoles.

People keep saying Cyberpunk, when next gen version of Cyberpunk is not releasing until next year. Sure, you can play the netbook optimized, old-gen version of Cyberpunk on your brand new expensive PS5, but why would you ruin the game like that?

The same applies to Sony, though.

Miles Morales is a cross gen title, Demon's Souls is a remake. Both titles aren't tapping into the biggest upgrade of this gen: faster storage.
What's left is that Destruction Allstars game, which looks fun (and might even be the title I have most interest in), but doesn't scream AAA either. And Sackboy... well... yeah.

Both consoles lack a game like Killzone Shadow Fall. I've yet to have that "wow"-moment I had when I saw Killzone back then.

Cyberpunk comes out on PS5 launch day.

We both are right.
Don't forget Ryse. That game was a system showcase.

True. Which is why you don't put all your eggs into one basket (game). And if you do (like Nintendo with Breath of the Wild), you better make sure it's ready aka no excuses - or delay launch until ready (like Nintendo). Cause you know if that basket breaks, you're f*****. MS is like, well we fucked it up... please forgive us, now look this other way, you'll feel much better. That's one way to go about it but there are other ways. Don't think it should be pushed under the rug.

We need more AA titles like Ridge Racer again, which show the graphical improvement without needing years in development.

We have those, albeit third party, in Kena and the Medium etc.

Horizon : Ratchet ( ok ratched can be next gen, but its not a launch title!)
God of War (maybe) : Gran Turismo ( what? both of these are not launch titles. They have shown nothing on god of war, for all we know its 2 years out. )

Your argument is pretty shit.

I think MS should have had one launch title. It would have worked out better. I think they will have more next gen looking games next year, then sony will release. Before this purchase we still hadn't seen anything announced from half the studios.

? A remake can be a next gen title.

Thats like saying Resident Evil 2 remake or FFVII remake can't be current gen and your response is "its a remake". It doesn't really many that much sense.... Demon Souls is a next gen title as its coming out on PS5, using the PS5 for it to exist.....that is as next gen as you get my friend. I don't even know what someone would even define it as if not that.

Next, Demon Souls is using a NEW ENGINE, its not simply updated graphics like a remaster, its literally made from the ground up.

I'm really not worried about MS first party at all. I have little doubt that they are going to put a lot of money and resources into constructing high quality games and we will see them in due time.

Nope I have finished the original demon’s souls and other than the graphics (not even the animation, that seems to be exactly the same with the ps3 game) the game is exactly the same or at least it seems to be from the footage Sony has provided.

The latest DF analysis of Demon’s Souls shows side-by-side comparisons with all new animations. How well do you remember your playthrough of Demon’s Souls on PS3?

Launch lineups are not indicative of success or failure. Remember last gen when Xbox had exclusives like Dead Rising 3, Ryse, Forza and Killer Instinct going up against Knack, Resogun and Kill zone Shadow fall.

For me I don't see this as Demons souls going up against nothing. I see this as Demons souls going up against Game Pass+ EA play. The megaton value in the Xbox series s is it's launch day exclusive. If I was still a ps4 only gamer, that would sell me on getting an xbox over a PlayStation at launch. Demon's souls is probably one of the strongest launch titles ever made, but it's 70 dollars for one fucking game. What happens when I get tired of it in a week or so and want to play something else.

You can either buy a 4k blu-ray player and avengers remake director's cut. Or you can get a fire stick and netflix with hulu. I mean. Come on.

Kind of but PS2 also had a decent number of third party exclusive games.

I bought my PS2 at the UK launch with Timesplitters and Tekken Tag Tournament (both of which were exclusive next gen only games at the time).

Gran Turismo 3 then launched not much after launch and also ZOE which came with the MGS2 demo.

The console also launched with no real competition since GameCube and Xbox came out much later. It's not really comparable to the PS5 launch.

what's the big ps5 exclusive? just curious

As far as I can tell the big PS5 exclusive is supposed to be Demon's Souls?

My original point was that although PS2 didn't have many/any decent Sony exclusives at launch either it did sill have decent third party exclusives and therefore the PS5 launch isn't comparable to the PS2 launch.

It's a huge failure on MS part because of expectations for Halo that they caused, and especially due to how hard they worked to reposition themselves starting this November. But life goes on and they do deserve some credit for delaying the game when they realized it was necessary. And on the notion of fairness, I am excited for some of PS5's launch games, but primarily for remasters. So it's not like Sony is really dunking the ball when it comes to next gen offerings at launch IMO.

Nah, not even remotely.

A fucking REMASTER is like a DVD to 4K, its literally a restoration.

A remake is not the same thing. It would be like saying the True Grit remake is the same content. It doesn't make that much sense.

You can go out and buy the PS1 version of Final Fantasy VII too, your not fucking playing the remake, they are not the same things, they are LITERALLY on different engines.... Its a massively wild stretch...

I don't think its in the same league whatsoever as RE2 and FFVII as far as remakes go. If it were 30fps and i didn't know it was PS5 I would think its running on the PS4 Pro.

Same league.

Remaking a game from the ground up in a new engine very much puts it in the same league. You can think what ever you want, but when a game is literally made from the ground up on a new engine, that very much is in the same league as FFVII remake and RE2 remake.

edit. Using your logic, even RE2 remake shouldn't be seen as one, its using RE7's engine... Simply sounds like senseless nitpicking

Its the same game with tweeks to gameplay. I could show most normal people all 3 of those remakes and they wouldn't recognise RE2 and FFVII as the originals as tarted up unlike DS.

Not the same game, its not even the same engine.

From RE2 and FFVII you are also talking about games that are from PS1, not from PS3. The gameplay in the Souls series is its main feature, it must actually support the standard concept, RE2 and FFVII's gameplay is more so conceptual, it can be altered greatly and still drive hope the main idea.

It would be like trying to ask for DMC1 remake to play wildly different.

Hint.

It won't. You won't see some huge RE2 type shift with DMC1 remake if they ever make one because the core gameplay is the main focal point.

Do most people even care for exclusives to start with or first party games? pretty sure most people play 3rd party games at this point. The next fifa or madden or call of duty will be enough to sell people those boxes.
