SNES Game Club - May 2021: Super Metroid

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

How it works:
Each month, we'll choose a game from the vast library of the Super Nintendo Super Nintendo . We'll all play the same game and discuss it in the thread. Think of it like an old school book club, but for retro games. And just like a book club, you don't really need to finish the game to talk about it with us. There are lots of ways to play SNES games on modern systems, or you can choose to play on original hardware like a badass. So let's hop into some 16 Bit awesomeness together.

Game of the Month:
May 2021: Super Metroid

Ways to Play:
Original Hardware:
First of all, the most "pure" way to play these games would be on original hardware. I personally recommend something like an Everdrive or SD2SNES cartridge if you go that route, unless you're a millionaire or just happen to have the games we choose in your collection.

SNES Classic Microconsole:

This system can be hooked up to modern TVs and comes with about 20 games pre-installed. However, they can be hacked to add additional games.

Switch Online:

If you have a Switch, then Nintendo offers their online service for $20/year which includes access to a select number of SNES games. Not every game we choose will be available here, but some will!

RetroArch:

RetroArch runs on damn near everything and it's a great way to experience the SNES. PCs, Macs, Linux computers as well as Raspberry Pi and cell phones. You can even run this on other game consoles, though it usually requires them to be hacked. There is even an easy and free Steam version

RetroArch can also be integrated directly into GOG Galaxy, courtesy of yours truly

Standalone Emulators:
There are a whole host of standalone emulators available. SNES9X has been around since the 90s. If you have questions, ask in the thread!

Retro Achievements (Optional)
Retro Achievements is a community-run website that integrates directly into RetroArch and provides a modern flair to classic games. Think of it like Xbox achievements or PlayStation trophies, but for SNES games.

These provide a fun way to re-live games from the past, but obviously setting them up for this challenge is 100% optional. Comparing or showing off achievements in this thread is strongly encouraged! :)

ROM Files
Do not ask where to get ROM files. Don't post links to ROM files in the thread. Do your own Google Research.

That's one outstanding list! Voted for Mega Man X, it is among my all time favorite title. Damn, I miss those times... :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Go Go Neo Rangers!
Fuck yea. Would be great if we included lesser known titles in the future. Also, are RPGs going to be included? I'm always looking for an excuse to play FF6 and Chrono Trigger again.

I enjoy it and would gladly play through it.

For sure.

I'm in for this, it sounds fun.

I think Super Mario World is the best start. It's a great game that still holds up, and it's easily available legally.

We should start the club with the canonical SNES game: Metal Marines. Best strategy games on the SNES (and one of my favorites).

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
No sane person. A rom hack to bump up the framerate or a remaster would be great.
Whew, I thought I was the insane one here. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

You can play it at 60fps on emultors already. Havent tried it but looks like a much better experience.

I am so in! I have my Switch at work, so i’ll be able to participate. Looking forward to it!

What better way to start than with the grandaddy of launch games, Super Mario World?!

As someone who has been experiencing the SNES library for the first time recently, this is a great idea and couldn’t come at a better time. Excited to talk SMW with all of you.

Voted Megaman as I've yet to finish the first one (X4 is still my favorite of them all though. Zero 4life)

I stole mirrored Nikana Nikana 's idea and made a sega genesis/mega drive one. Don't at me, we discussed about it. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

When the next months include Konami shooters, I'll join the discussion. Out of all this threads game list, of course I played SMW like everyone else. Great game, but don't remember much about it to be honest. Although the cool mode 7 scaling/rotating and jumping on Yoshi added that coconut clapping echo to the music were awesome.

Nikana

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I expected mario to likely win but I didn't think MMX would be second.
