Xbox Series X/S will let players free up storage space by ‘selectively uninstalling parts of games’

"Xbox director of program management Jason Ronald discussed the new feature during a podcast with Microsoft’s Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb.

“Even beyond the hardware, we’ve actually made user interface improvements to make it easier for you to manage your storage,” he said. “As an example, one of the new features that we’re adding is actually for—if a title chooses to support it—the ability to selectively uninstall different components of the game.

“So, let’s say you play a campaign as an example, and then you want to focus exclusively on multiplayer. If the developers chose to support it you can actually uninstall the campaign itself so that you can be more in control of how you’re actually using your storage, so that you really get the most benefit out of the available storage that you have.”

Xbox Series X comes with 1TB of internal storage and Xbox Series S has 512GB. While the former reportedly reserves almost 20 percent of its internal SSD storage for its operating system, leaving around 800GB usable for software, it’s unclear how much Series S storage is reserved for system files, but Ronald has said to expect smaller install sizes in general on the cheaper console.

I heard about this feature a while back.

Would be cool if PS5 had that feature. Would instantly uninstall all the cinematics/cutscenes from TLOU2.

It does, but it's not going to be "remove cinematics". This was announced on Mark Cerny's talk "Road to PS5". You will be able to install just the single player campaign, or just the MP, etc. They haven't given the details yet, to know exactly how many "parts' the games will have to be able to install/uninstall.

I remember the PS4 let you select what parts to install first. This was supported on one title I can remember - Killzone: Shadow Fall. With that in mind, because this is optional, I don't expect it to get great mileage. I hope I'm wrong though.

So basically the same thing that Sony announced last year... just with this you need to install everything first, then remove it because of smart delivery?

It's pretty obvious that most games can easily use much less space. Just include English audio and if someone needs different language put it on PSStore.

Video < audio when speaking of storage.

The only way I would like it to have it as a system level option like an Inclusion list of audio tracks or if I was able to do it in-game.

It also had a quick boot up, was super fast for its time, think it was the only game to do that also. A game ahead of its time. Hope it gets a ps5 boost patch as sony seem to forget killzone exists these days.

Great feature - I'd never install MP so it's well handy :)

It is present on Halo MCC and is called "Intelligent Delivery". You don't need to "install everything first".

This is good news, I'll probably just keep multiplayer and Zombies on Call Of Duty on my Series S to save space.

This is an old feature, but in don't see why most developers would want to use it. They spent years creating something only for you to download half of it.

Cerny said the PS5 had this kind of feature months ago.

Sounds like it's more a developer thing than a Sony/MS thing. Which is good. If both consoles support it, it means third parties will almost definitely support it. Although I'm having difficulty how it might apply to me, maybe in the new Watch Dogs you won't have to install the online components. The new uncharted you can just have the campaign etc.

This was/is possible on the Xbox one too btw. Barely any developers used it. I don’t expect significantly more will this gen.

These consoles have a much higher cost per GB of storage and games are getting bigger so there could be the chance that the game they do not buy or play and then spend money on is yours ;). Conditions change... support should change too.

This is great. As a whole the Xbox OS is just more mature thanks to things like this

I hope I can get rid of the multiplayer crap of the games so I can enjoy the single player modes without having to have that cancer occupying space on my SSD

Remember this gen when both companies promised you could start playing a game that was only partially downloaded. E.g. start playing the campaign but not MP, or vice vercer.

Except it never actually worked. 9/10 games allowed you to browse your settings, that's it. I have my doubts about whether devs would be bothered putting in the right indexes and partitions in their game file structures / code bases to allow for this.

And there you have it...a feature somewhat similar to PS5s selective download feature. This sounds like you would have to download the whole game first then delete portions. Im not sure PS5 works this way
