Digital Foundry's John: Been talking to developers, people will be pleasantly surprised with PS5's results

We haven't actually had hands on with the PS5 yet, but just talking to developers... I think people will be surprised in a good way. [I have been] hearing some good things about that PS5.

A bit vague but it's hard not to read this like doing better than its numerical grunt. What comes to mind is Sony (correctly) saying that flops are just a paper calculation of CUs, it's ALUs * 2 * clock speed, but other things on the die scale with clock speed, caches, buffers, command processors, etc, plus API differences and so on.

Update: Perhaps some more flavor

Digital Foundry are miles better then the hacks that consume the gaming media and press. Like night and day difference! Do they have a favourite...maybe. is it in your face? Not really. Is their content detailed, professional and interesting? Certainly. Will I stop answering my own questions in this post? Hopefully!

The sound cut out before he finished, but as a professional lip reader I was able to get everything he said.

The full sentence was

"We haven't actually had hands on with the PS5 yet, but just talking to developers... I think people will be surprised in a good way. [I have been] hearing some good things about that PS5[running at 1440p and dynamic 4K]. :messenger_beaming:

The fact that so many people pile on DF around here is disappointing. They have been incredibly fair to both Sony and Microsoft over the course of this gen and have criticized and complimented both. They called Uncharted 4 a technical masterpiece and they criticized Microsoft's launch Xbox One. The whole notion pushed by fanboys that they are "paid shills" is pretty sad. They're one of the few outfits that provides real analysis on games as opposed to publishing articles about colonialism in Animal Crossing or war crimes in COD.

Multiplat games will look almost identical next gen.

Makes me wonder if this will make DF redundant.

Naw, GPUs, CPUs, ports, they'll always have something to do.

Even if multiplats are extremely similar, maybe people will be even more interested in the pixel peeping for their epeen measuring

I 'member when people were saying they were shilling for Xbox. Surely people will be consistent!

Current shilling is only to negate previous MS shilling, as that previous shilling will be shown to be misplaced when first head to heads show little difference.

I reckon that the Geometry Engine's elimination of unnecessary calculations also contributes to better rasterization performance relative to what rasterization performance would be otherwise.

PS5 is lookin really hot. Gimme a reason to wait Sony. There has to be something wrong with this thing.

All they did was listen to everyone’s concerns about the PS4 gen cooling and noise and address it, impressively. Put together the best launch lineup in 3 generations and include an SSD that, if released tomorrow, would retail for about$350. All for $500. They need to do more,no?

We literally have no idea if this runs cool or quiet. Let’s wait before declaring it impressive.

Why would some developer even consider talking to any of the 5 stooges? Not just that, but also share "juicy secrets" with any of them? How did he get some devs. personal email? Or did he by accident enter a devs. only discord channel? and started questioning them?

These get like any other youtuber, twitter insider "fed with information".
