Sony now warns users that others may record voice party chats on PSN

It boils down to a China-like social credit system. Having a bad day? Report your friend and take something out of context for the troll-rush.

The fear of the thing that will never happen.

Real friends won't do that. So if you're not talking to someone you know and trust, don't give them any rope to hang you with. Aiming for shock value with complete strangers is just stupid. And unless it's a group of people you've gamed with for a long time, and have some social media ties to, there's no point in saying anything controversial. Fortunately, the only times I've ever said anything even remotely offensive was with clan mates I'd known for a few months, had added on FB, had heard them say some mildly sharp things, and they were all in their late-20s/early-30s, and a few were married with kids. Grown-ass men, not looking for anything more than a chance to relax after work. We didn't trash talk each other.

For hardcore trash talk, I reserve that for my closest personal friends. My boy and I tear each other up in NBA2k, FIFA, or MLB. Then we go out for a pub/club crawl. Gaming chat should be no different than chatting in public. You don't cuss out strangers, unless you're ready for the possibility that one of them might feed you your teeth. Likewise, someone online might get you banned. Civility should exist online and in person. Some twats don't get that, and that's why these policies exist.

Lets be clear,

At no point will be specifically notified when your being recorded.

No consent is required at the time.

The recording is being done by Sony on behalf of the user, then sent to sony.

Any attempt to rationalise this as different from Sony recording chats without your notice is false.

The recording is done by Sony, without your direct consent or knowledge.. and is provided to Sony... without your consent or knowledge.
Exactly!

I've asked this already but does the Ps4 currently record voice chat with game play clips? I know the Xbox One doesn't. I always assumed it was due to privacy laws.

Thread title is misleading..

Sony will be doing the recording.

Somy will be provided with the recording.

There is no indication you can opt out at the time or your even notified.

Please update the thread title...
The recording process is initiated by the user. Otherwise, you can say that Microsoft is doing the recording when someone posts revenge porn from their laptop, just because the OS has the cam functionality built-in. That's very specious logic. I get the impression some of you are the jerks we encounter in public lobbies.

Tweet was deleted. Don't know how you get to the archive version of it.

"Voice chats may be recorded for moderation".

Nothing else to read into it. Its right there in front of you.

To cover all legal bases in order to never be held legally accountable by what others do, It's not rocket science. Why would Sony spend large sums of money on infrastructure recording what idiots say in party chat?
Then they could simply word it like: We are not responsible what other users may do using the voice chat function.
Instead of outright saying; using the voice chat you agree to your voice being rcorded. So once I use the voice chat I forfeit every right I have, it's clever wording but I don't know it will hold up in court. And why would Sony do it? So the Kinect issue back then were also way overblown by users on this board because why would MS do it right? They didn't even have clever worded disclaimers in there legal notice like Sony has now. The device only existed and it was because of that the concern issues were a hot topic on this board for weeks.

Other people could always record me and send it so Sony if they had the know how. What's new?

Nothing except I think this can be done retroactively like the share feature captures the last 15 minutes of gameplay. It's me speculating but it sounds like if someone is breaking ToS, harassing etc you can just snip the last few mins of audio and upload it to Sony for moderation. I think you can opt out on the PS4 via an audio setting to allow your voice to appear in any shared broadcasts, but this still allows people to report any nobheads.

Why is anyone surprised by that?

First off you have to join a voice chat - so activly participate in that social feature for it to be possible to be recorded.
Secondly - You'll now be able to report players that can't behave, troll or maybe even do illegal stuff like try to sell drugs, recruit you for al qaida or some other shit.

The only real news here is probably that sony will now pay attention to whats happening on their "social" network and accept reports with voice recordings about such behavior.

Xbox has the exact same functionality and has done for a very long time.

Uhm the point went behind your head. Can you point me to a passage in their TOS/Legal Notice they say that by using the voice chat function you agree that your voice be recorded.

... or get reported for misgendering someone, using the wrong pronoun or causing some other social injustice current year offense. Jeez, I wonder which is more likely? Getting a job offer from Al Qaida on PS Plus or getting reported by some zealous SJW's?

A rhetorical question.

The sentence that has caused all this concern should be a captcha type thing to be allowed to join the forum, get your drivers license, get a credit card, vote, or reproduce lol. “Read the following sentence and write what it means to you”. If you come to the conclusion that OP and seemingly 75% of posters did about Sony recording your chat, you fail.

The world would be a much, much, better place.

Just an FYI for folks out there that might not be aware. But if you talk on any device with other people you can/will/might be recorded. Choose your friends carefully.

Even after PSUK tweet clearing everything up I keep reading "outraged" users (who apparently can't read to save their lives) and my brain goes:

You gigantic self portrait helps nothing...

Sony records the voice chat (at the initiation of the user).
Sony gets sent the recording.. all without your specific consent or knowledge.

This is way different from some random person reacording you using their own device.. that's why they need your consent, and they put it in the TOS.. because Sony is the one doing the recording and the "moderation".

Reading comprehension, how does that work?

It’s fine and has always been this way. You should always be reminded that whatever you say could end up trending on YouTube or Twitter.

This does give me horrible flashbacks to the time I incorrectly thought I was playing Overwatch with my mic muted though...

I love how fanboys called xbox One a spyware machine, yet has no issues with this

Worst kind of hypocrites lol

Can you guys read? It doesn't say Sony is doing the recording.. it's talking about other users in the chat making the recording and sending it in to Sony.

Yeah Sony are smart. Why pay for ads or pay for spies when their Fanboys does all the work for them for free haha. It's genius

"By others". In what way is that not clear? Every time you're in a voice chat with anyone on any platform, there's the possibility that they may record it.

Actually, if you play on Xbox One in a party, and someone records a gameplay clip, the voice from the party is not included in the clip.

So why is there a specific reason to do this on the PS5?

How strict are they?

Can I assume gender?
I can say that there are only 2 genders?

Probably depends if its a mental illness moderator or Neil Druckmann that gets their hand on your report.

But given how Sony and all the other devs are going full woke atm, probably not as you hurt other people's fragile feelings.

On the xbox you cannot record party chat, Microsoft deliberately provides no way to do this.

If as a user you wish to record it you will have to create a custom solution and then record it outside of xbox. Microsoft will not do it on your behalf, they will not record the party chat or store it on their systems.

With the Ps5, sony provides a way for you to instruct Sony to record all users in party chat.

From their quote.. it is extremely clear that the Playstation and Sony will do the recording.. and its a new "feature".
"Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review."

Do people go into voice chats with people they dont know?

I have had ps4 since launch and only people I have had party chat are friends.

And on most online games nobody usually uses mic, and annoying ones can be just muted

This is not a problem, more than someone taking your pictures at public place. If you fear it, fear a ninja suit.

If you fear being recorded, dont go chat with strangers, why would you need to anyway

And anyway if you have to and some stranger calls you a homo-faggot-turd = be an adult/better person and just laugh it off

Only simple minded and selfish people get offended what some strangers says to you, their words should have no impact.

They don't give end users the option to ask them to record anything, because they already record everything by default, just like Facebook and others.

This thread blows my mind.

This is how it always was:

You have the option on PS4 if you want your voice to be shared. If you didn't check that box your voice won't be recorded, not in your own videos and not in other peoples videos.

Example:
I play great and want to make a video via sharefactory. I save the clip, when editing the video you can hear your own voice and anyone in the party (if you were in one obviously) who also checked that box. Let's say you were in a group of 4, 2 people checked that box, you will only hear those 2 people out of the 4.

It really isn't that difficult to understand and it was always like this. Sony just decided to put in a warning information this time.

You can find the option in settings, sharing/broadcasting if I remember correctly.

Didn't miss anything. I wouldn't be here posting what I did post if I didn't know what I was talking about.

The only thing which might have changed (can't be sure until I see the settings on PS5) is that you can't uncheck that "share my voice" box which I talked about on the PS5. The only option then would be to not join randoms, don't talk shit if you don't trust your buddies or don't join parties at all.

But I am pretty sure the option will be available.

Edit: UPDATE: Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.

This is such a complex issue and posters have made excellent points either side of the argument I honestly don't know where I stand. I don't like the idea of people recording everything i say and also the potential misuses with today's snowflakes but no one should have to put with racism, death threats etc. The potential of been online or console banned is serious and that kind of action does need to be backed up with evidence.

Honestly don't know which side I fall on this.

By signing into psn ... even on a ps4.. you have to consent to be recorded in any voice chat session. It has nothing to do with the “share” option.

I mean you're clearly very concerned that other people can record your voice within the PS5

Why?

Im not lol but many others here are.

Some people because they see it as an invasion of privacy.

Some because they think its all part of a right wing conspiracy.

Some because they think its all part of a left wing conspiracy.

Im just here to set the record straight ... and have some fun whilst doing it.

I think it's only going to affect dynamic lobbies with non real friends. You always have that one bitter fucker in a raid who will report someone else in the group for saying summat stupid. If anything it hurts temporary or game focused parties (e.g. Division raids for example) as it facilitates a level of distrust. Part of me thinks this might be a non intrusive way to make people gravitate back towards game voip ratehr than stay in parties unless you're actually real life friends.

Either way, most people (rando's) use discord on their phone now anyway so don't see it as a big deal
