After looking at some details of the PS5UI video, there's some people who thinks PS5 can suspend multiple games and switch to one from another in a similar fashion of the Series X's Quick Resume feature allowing you to move from a game to another without having to load if from scratch and without losing your progress since the saved last checkpoit. Do you think is it the case? These are the hints that created this 'conspiracy theory':

1: When it switches from Sackboy to Destruction All Stars, the confirmation screen that appears in PS4 letting you know that if you open a new game will close the previous one doesn't appear. Does it mean it always closes the previous one without confirmation or what it does is to suspend the previous game and to run the next one?

2: When it switches from Sackboy to Destruction All Stars, it takes around 7-8 seconds since it clicks to launch the new game until we see the Sony logo. This is way more than the under 2 seconds it should take to launch a game, and seems that the server login and wait for other players is made in other screens that appears later. So seems the console is doing something else than to launch the new game. Maybe is it suspending the previous game (dumpling its RAM to the SSD)?

3: In the bottom menu there's a 'Switcher' icon that shows the icon of the game that you are currently playing. Do this mean you can have multiple games 'open' and switch from one to another or like in PS4 just between the game you are running and some app you can have in background like a web browser, YouTube, Netflix and so on?

Look at this extra detail provided by Tripolygon Tripolygon in the following image. Before loading a game (1:38 of the video, when it's resuming Sackboy from the Rest Mode) that icon shows like 3 similar icons one behind the other, suggesting it allows to switch between at least 3 games (or maybe apps?). Maybe it only allows to switch between a game and a secondary app like in PS4, or are they going to allow you to switch between multiple games?

4: A year ago Jim Ryan said that PS4 Pro uses between 1.0W and 6.4W while in Rest Mode, while all PS4 modes while totally switched off consume 0.2W (to basically detect power/eject/etc buttons, USB chargers, etc). He said "PS5 will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than PS4 (they estimated it can be achieved at around 0.5 W)".

https://blog.playstation.com/2019/0...-the-united-nations-to-combat-climate-change/

So we can assume that when in Rest Mode very likely the PS5 basically is switched off + suspended game stored somewhere + button press detection + USB charge + maybe partially switched on for update downloads when needed (probably via some sort of soft wake-on-lan), so the state of the suspended game instead of being in the RAM would be very likely dumped in the SSD. This also would explain why when resuming a game from the Rest Mode takes a couple of seconds to resume (it would be the time needed to fill the game's RAM with the content it had when put it Rest Mode). And doing it with a single game, nothing stops from them to do it with multiple games (at the expense of SSD space, obviously).

5: When putting the console in 'Rest Mode' (stand-by), it mentions that it will 'suspend your games'. Are they talking about that suspending multiple games at the same time, or do they mean that you can suspend a single game but you can do it will all the games of your library?

What do you think about it, Neogaf? Do you think it will feature a Quick Resume feature or not? Do you think PS5 doesn't need it because thanks to its SSD+I/O stuff it already will load games faster than Series X even if loading games from scratch instead of resuming them, and using the activities you will save more time because of skipping menus and logos?

I promise I didn't vote for the stupid option.

Of course it will ma pal, it has shortcuts directly to levels in the games via the UI, surely thats an extension of what PS5 quick-resume would be like.

Even if it "only" does two (2) games I'll be happy because thats generally how many games I'd play at once on a console.

They did purposely say that they were only showing "some" of its features.

I didnt come away with the impression it had multiple game quick resume. Which I want it to have, but then again, if it takes 2 seconds to load a new game from the menu, whats the point? That's multitudes faster than the quick resume works anyway.

Yes, and they mentioned that will share more stuff in the upcoming days.

Same here, this is what I personally think.

Even if doesn’t, it’s not like the XSX has a special hardware for it and PS5 is just as capable (if not more due to SSD speeds). It may take some time for the update, if it’s not there at launch.

You can read it two ways:

When D:AS was started you should have got a message saying the other game was suspended (indicating it was closed)
When D:AS was started you should have got a message saying the other game would be closed (indicating it was suspended)
Or assume confirmation notifications are now disabled so we will have to wait.

I think Switcher just relates to switching the cards for that game.

You cant always save where you want to resume from though (e.g. middle of a game on NBA/Fifa in career mode)

it most likely has the same suspend feature the PS4 had.

Sony seems to bet on their system where games can give you the option to directly jump into a specific level, which is ultimately similar but not exactly the same. both approaches have pros and cons

I'm with you there, but if it only does one game at a time, then you still always have that, at least. From what they showed, its guaranteed to at least work the same way ps4 already does.

What I find weird is the "activities." So for some games, it's like there's a clickable card that just puts you in a specific place of the game in 2 seconds.

So maybe you can't have a quick resume spot saved and ready for some game you played 2 weeks ago, but there's a card telling you that you were on a specific level that you click and it just puts you at the beginning of it. Very interesting stuff.

People need to stop talking about FUD on here all the time, its making all the Scottish guys (and Lesbians) horny all the time.

I vote we change the acronym to PNUS: "Pretty Nasty, Underhanded Scaremongering"
How about F.U.C.K (Fear, Uncertainty, Charlatanry, and..... Krauts?Kunts? )

Yeah I'm deffo not going to use the suspend feature on multiple games. I'd end up forgetting and wipe a save or summat. One is OK in my simple head.

What I find interesting in activites is obviously some content will be gated by progress. You won't be able to chapter select 18 in UC4 when you haven't done the previous 17. So will the cards not be there? Be obfuscated/blurred etc. There aren't that many entry points into games really. It would be cool if on Valhalla it let you resume 'main quest', 'nearest side quest', 'nearest harbour', 'ravensthrope' etc.

Like a save state would be cool as well. I think they chose Sackboy specifically to showcase all this stuff, but I kinda wanna see how the big games use it.

Maybe?

MS uses a hypervisor; a technique that allows them to do the RAM dump.

Sony may be using that technique this gen based on their picture in picture stuff (hypervisor is also how MS did "snap" last gen.) However you can do PIP without a hypervisor so that isn't proof of anything.

But if they aren't using a hypervisor/virtualization, then no, they are unlikely to have quick resume.

I don't think Sony needs such a feature explicitly. I think the preview graphic when you go to a game is loaded in the blink of an eye and as soon as the game starts, the data is loaded from memory almost immediately. Presumably Sony will have developed a corresponding file system for the PS5 and its SSD.

I think it's been leaked months ago before the quick resume on xbox that PS5 has it? Part of the SSD partition?

I believe if it switches without closing the other game it is limited to switching between two games. That is all we were shown.

It’s a cool feature, but this can kill your ssd on few years if you abuse every day of this feature. A current SSD have around 10 years of lifetime if you are writing 50GB everyday. This is writing around 12 GB every time you are suspending a game

There are hundreds of consoles, computers of arcade systems emulated that do this 'savestate' stuff dumping the ram in a file to load it later, and like half a dozen consoles also did it in the past to resume games when you put the device in stand-by. None of them did use a hypervisor/virtualization because to copy a portion of the RAM in a HDD/SDD file you don't need them.

What? Please tell me more and provide source of this, I'm interested to know more about it.

I think its a given. And was obvious without the closing application notification while he switched between games.

I'm having a hard time finding it, but it was something old maybe from WIRED? Not sure, something describing such a thing. If I get it I'll share it.

I think if there was a quick resume feature for multiple games on PS5, they would have mentioned it in the video. It's not impossible they kept it for a later reveal, but I find it a bit unlikely since they did exactly that. Moreover, I would expect some kind of warning prompt when switching from one game to another even with quick resume, so I don't think the fact there was no prompt on screen means much. Warning prompts could just be something you can turn off in the system options menu, or Sony did it specifically for this presentation.

Do we know how much space is dedicated for the OS on PS5? If there is a similar feature, the console needs to reserve as much RAM (excluding the one for running the OS) on the SSD for each game it will let you suspend, which would definitely show for 3-4 games supported.

I think you should stop making FUD until the system's released, it's just 30-40 days away, play some video games until then.

I am not sure that feature will be supported by all games. It probably depends on the dev.

"Suspend your GAMES" would be a strange way to word it if you can only suspend one. Good catch.
It looks like it was written that way to be consistent with the grammar. It also mentions controllers and updates as well. They wanted all the terms to be plural.

If it's a memory dump (like on Xbox), it should work with everything regardless of the game code, even with backwards compatible games. It's like a save state on an emulator, it's not something the developers ever accounted for, but it works since it literally saves everything of the state the game is in at a given moment, and later restores it exactly as it was.

If Sony is implementing it in a more refined way in order to save SSD space, then it's definitely up to the devs, and since it sounds kinda complicated to account for in multiple engines I can realistically only see first party games using it.

Gotta imagine most of these “features” will be parodied between the systems. How useful any of it will be remains to be seen.

I'm fine with the way it works on PS4 and Xbox currently, and don't need multiple games queued up like on Xbox.

I don’t think so no. It would be highlighted in the UI reveal if it did. We will see it probably when the media get their hand on the console close to launch. IF they get it.

I imagine it would be a thing, it just won't have a slick name like "quick resume" In all seriousness, is there anything that would be preventing the PS5 from doing this? Isn't quick resume like a suspend mode, but for multiple games? It's like having multiple apps open on my iphone.

Switcher doesn't sound like Quick Resume feature. For me, it more of a game supporting Switcher feature, by switching levels instantly on the same game.

I don't really see the need to be able to quick resume multiple games. As long as the last one I was playing resumes I'll be happy. If there's at least one then I'd say it is a successful implementation.
