These prototype units are using an old UI. However, since the One X interface is 1080p, I'm not letting MS off the hook. They better fix this. There's no excuse. None. Even the One S should be able to do the UI in 4K.

If the ram usage of the 4K interface becomes a pain in the arse they probably should work on it again. I hope we will get a 4k ui soon but that's not a massive desire from me personally.

Why does it matter if the UI is 1080 or 4K? I didn't even know it was 1080, never really thought or cared about it to be honest.

I'm really not trying to be a smartass, a lot of people seem to be upset about it so I'm curious why people feel it's a big deal. Is it just so the UI looks better in 4K or is there some other advantage that I'm unaware of?

I love, love, love the look of the Series X and it blends perfectly with my design aesthetic.

The hideous dumpster fire of a PS5 OTOH, I'd need to hide in drawer, thankfully I'm not getting one so it won't be an issue for me.
Yes you are. I've already ordered one for you so we can stream Goodbye Volcano High together.

So it's CF Express and a 2230 m.2 size. The chip included has a max throughput of 3.75gbps read and write. They advertise 2.4gbps because that is what it will run at on average due to thermal throttling that all SSD's suffer from. Jeff Grubb took one apart and the part number is the Phison 3.75gbps chip. Should mean that the SSD on the main board is replaceable and not soldered on.

Crazy that it uses the CF Express connection, if these work in SLRs expect them to be bought up by photographers as all the CF Express cards are ridiculously expensive for smaller sizes and lower speeds. Jeff Grubb has been great with his XSX coverage.

Watching Jeff Grubbs latest series x video and he’s talking about diminishing returns of the games, a lot will look like this generation, he loves playing all his old games and cross gen is fine and so on.

Not being funny these systems costs $500! I don’t think I’ve ever known a console launch period like this particularly for the constant chatter about older titles. If anything what he was saying made me think am I better off just keeping what I’ve got now.

There is a pandemic playing a big part of course , something just feels off tho, like what he’s saying isn’t the norm for upcoming console if you see what I’m getting at.

Maybe I misheard what he’s saying in the video, it feels uninspired what he’s saying basically. To me anyway.

Hey Bernkastel Bernkastel -- Since you did such an amazing job in making this OT, would you consider making a Series X review OT in the near future since YTers and influencers are now giving their reviews and final thoughts of the world's most powerful console?
Like this?
We better wait for the actual release. Although I am happy to assist anyone willing to do that now. Honestly I have never done a review thread.

People actually care this much about the resolution of the UI? I didn't even notice it to be honest. Yeah, it would be nice but it's not a dealbreaker.

On top of that, the PS5 UI has interactivity of the game integrated with the OS at 4k HDR. How can this not hog up more OSfootprint? Not trying to spread fud or troll, I do think its cool, but prefer 1080p SDR clean UI that takes up less of an OS footprint so more RAM and bandwidth is available to 4k, HDR, Raytracing at 60fps

I don't know why people care, either. Could they not just upscale the 1080p assets to near 4K through DirectML image upscaling? I know the consoles don't have DLSS 2.0 and their solutions probably won't be as robust as Nvidia's, but if there's a valid reason to use it, it'd prob be in the console UI.

Keeping the assets at 1080p saves system resources (RAM, GPU, CPU) for developers, which is always preferable. But like other people are saying, it could just be 1080p for the preview units and they implement the 4K mode in an update. Though if they could apply DirectML image upscaling for it, native 4K is honestly a waste of resources.

Looks even smaller than I thought it'd look. It's basically two jewel CD cases high on all sides, and maybe a little wider than one jewel CD case wide on top and bottom.

Seriously impressive for what's packed inside.

Don't think we're at the point of diminishing returns yet. Until we can get in-game what we saw in stuff like the Power Your Dreams TV advert they released last week, we've got a good ways to go in terms of visual IQ, density, scale, and fidelity, for sure.

Jeff's reacting mainly to the early launch phase stuff. I think what we're seeing is moreso the reality of game budgets and dev time eating into the window of what we'd normally get during launch. The cost and time associated with a massive AAA these days is just too much to promise full-blown generational jumps in graphics right out of the gate. However, we'll start truly seeing those next-gen style visual leaps a couple years in.

One by one the console warrior narratives are falling apart. Console noise "concern", heat "concern", the internal SSD can't be removed "concern", etc.

When one "concern" is addressed the next "concern" is brought out. The fact that we're now at "I'm "concerned" the UI is only 1080p" must mean they're getting desperate for ideas.

We're less than a month from launch. Xbox showed the system Dec 19, 2019. They showed the breakdown and full spec reveal, including having people come in and go through the process in-person in March, and hundreds of people have been playing on actual consoles at their homes all month with no Microsoft personnel supervising their actions. There has never been this level of transparency before a console launch in history. I have no intention of buying one as I'm content with my PC and the Switch, but with all the developments in BC and optimizations for my old Xbox games I kind of want one for that reason alone, and the fact that it runs Gears 5 almost as well as my PC is astounding given the form factor and price. Gamepass on the console is another good push, as there are a lot of games that aren't on the PC version of Gamepass.

Probabily we will see something similar to this soon

Thanks everyone that answered. So it's just about aesthetics and warrior losers desperate to find something, anything wrong with the more powerful console, well I could not give af.

I really wondered if I was missing something important about the Dash not being 4K. It looks fine and if it leaves even a little extra RAM for my games I hope they don't change it. I play games not the UI.

The Xbox One was able to gain a substantially amount of resources by removing PiP. With PS5 having a 4k front end as well as PiP that's a lot of stuff tied up. And not just Ram, but CPU cycles and GPU as well for the PiP video.

I really hope it's HDR though, having to switch between HDR and SDR sucks

Holy crap, these are MUCH improved textures and lighting FX. Wowza. I really wasn't expecting that. This really is going to be something special as it seems like they're dedicating more resources to it than I would have thought. I loved my time in the beta but decided to only play a bit to save myself for release as this "micro" genera is something I adore and really want more devs to explore. Honestly didn't think it was going to improve this much graphically. Can't wait.

I'm getting really confused about the whole Ray Tracing situation. Is it delayed on XSX?
These games will have Ray Tracing at launch
  • Bright Memory(Bright Memory Infinite is 2021, this is a demo)
  • Man Eater
  • Observer: System Redux
  • Watch Dogs: Legions
  • CoD: Black Ops Cold War
The Medium releasing December 10 will also have Ray Tracing. Only DMC V:SE will add ray tracing later. Apart from that DF tested this in a functional unit back in March.

Avengers next gen support just got pushed I believe on both PS5 and XSX/XSS.

Alighty, took me a little longer than expected, but I just got done doing the conversion successfully on my son's account. It went a little like this:
-Turn off recurring billing on Ultimate days before expiration
-Cancel membership(you'll still have it through the expiry date)
-Allowed a couple weeks to pass
-Bought 12-month Gold and 1-month Ultimate codes from Eneba with promo it was $59
-Login to Microsoft.com
-Goodle "Microsoft Redeem Code" and follow the link to Microsoft code redemption page
-Redeem 12-month Gold
-Offers 1-month free if you activate recurring billing. I did it.
-Redeem 1-month Ultimate
-Flashes info popup that describes the conversion rates
-Go back to subscriptions page and it will have the converted membership...

My result:
GQPQS7r.jpg

13-months of Ultimate for $59. That makes me, my daughter, and my son I've done this for recently, and now we're all set for a year.
