I need a new coffee maker

I ran out of K-Cups this morning, so I made sure on my grocery trip this evening to go and pick some up. Bought a box of Dunkin Donuts Original Blend cups and took them home. Followed standard procedure, except my Keurig just started squirting out water from the nozzle as soon as I turned it on, rather than actually making coffee. This isn't the first time this has happened. My Keurig had been on its 'way out' for a while now. Usually I could resolve the issue by unplugging it for a while, wiping down any part which may be affecting the brewing process, etc. I think if you hold down the small and large coffee buttons simultaneously it resets it also. This had started about a month or so ago, and was only becoming more frequent. I had a good run with this thing. It's lasted me like 3 years.

My quick fix didn't work this time. I just wanted a coffee. Just one cup of coffee. Frustrated at the thought of having to do this, I grabbed my Keurig and chucked into the trash. Went to Target to see what newer models Keurig had to offer, and was disgusted at just how much more they were asking than Amazon. I grabbed a cup of coffee at the nearby gas station, and headed home. My intention was to see what in God's name the difference was between the K-Classic and K-Elite that made it double the price. Iced coffee setting is dumb to me when you can just add ice to hot coffee. Now, looking further into Amazon reviews for Keurigs... it seems like what I experienced was a very common issue. I think I've had it with these damn things.

I already have a french press and grinder at home, but the process is so pretentious and laborious... I just can't be bothered half the time, hence why I feel back in love with my Keurig. I'm looking for something where I don't have to be a hipster about. I just want coffee. Every normal drip coffee maker I see online appears to have some reviews where they're like a fire hazard or the coffee tastes like plastic residue, etc. Maybe I really am better off with my french press. I need to drink less of this crap anyhow, I'm too hooked.

Isn't there just like a normal drip coffee maker out there that doesn't suck? Am I doomed to forever just use my french press like a snob, or deal with cheap ass Keurig crap?

Please, suggest suggestions.
Mr. Coffee? Cuisinart? Hamilton Beach? Black and Decker? Bunn? Mueller Austria?

Which model is that Ninja? Looks expensive

CP301. Amazon has it for $180. Yeah it's a little pricey, but as much as I drink the stuff plus the convenience of just one cup that's not Keurig is nice.

I definitely get my moneys worth.

My max is $200 so that's not bad. I dont want junk. I enjoy coffee too much.

Thank you

I just drink regular powdered coffee these days at home. Can't get any simpler than that... that I like my coffee super strong and sweet like Vietnamese iced coffee, usually iced.

But if I had a choice of buying a coffee machine, it would be Breville espresso machine. (870xl?)
yes, it's expensive as hell and also would need to clean once in a while - but cleaning process seems to be very easy and relatively quick, and pretty automatic.

is your French press large enough to make more than one cup at a time? that’s what I do, takes a few mins tops and I’m good for the day

worth it if you love coffee bro

I mean, yeah. I can get like two or three cups at a time. It's just a pain in the ass to clean, I always get coffee grounds all over the sink, etc.

Maybe I'll just switch back. Save some money.

I've been using my Bialetti Moka pot when off work, would advise saving for a good burr grinder, a moka pot would run you 50$ tops for a quality "6 cup", but good burr grinders will leave you flat broke.

Otherwise a V-60 with a good kettle with a steady flow long kneck thingy, a little involved too.

I keep a pot of instant around for emergencies like this. I can't face people without my morning routine of 6 cups first.

I also have a backup Mr Coffee ☕ pot but if power goes out its back to instant.

I also clean my keurig out to get hard water deposits out every couple months. I use white vinegar or buy a solution at the grocer.

Is that what might have happened to mine? I have coty water but still. I never did much in the way of cleaning it out

Very possible. I'll find and post what I use. They do clog up.

Here it is. It's called descaling.

White vinegar also works just the same but you gotta brew about 20 cups of just water to get the vinegar taste out. Even if you use a descaler you still have to brew several cups to get the cleaner out.

I've used both.

At home I have a Breville all on one espresso machine, pricey but totally worth it. Once you find the right beans, grind and tamp settings it literally could not be easier to make a great cup. I use a french press on the road with an electric kettle as most of our offices and hotels have k-cups and I cannot fucking stand that bullshit. I tried for a little while and the convenience was nice but it’s like drinking liquid shit (or so I imagine).

Luckily i dont have to deal with coffee makers (they look expensive), i just drink Turkish coffee.

If you upped your budget you could get one of the better coffee makers out there right now which is the Breville precision brewer.

I personally use a Technivorm Moccamaster and it has served me loyally well for 8 solid years so far.

Flying Toaster Flying Toaster

Wow that Technivorm is wild looking

What justifies the $100 increase over the Ninja CP301 mentioned earlier?

The major difference is more control of the process. I usually would not suggest this but if you were to ever want to change it up a bit having control of temp/brew process in an automatic is godlike at times. I used to be a major snob about coffee after one of my first jobs was as a barista in an actual coffee shop (not some Starbucks). The one thing that makes a huge difference in brew quality is temperature control and an automatic maker with settings like the Breville really is an amazing feature to have if you ever get adventurous.

I went to the cup system in 2010 and burned through 2 Keurigs with the amount of coffee I drink. So I upped it to a Technivorm that was the coffee maker one of my coworkers swore by as his household brewed coffee like addicts. The thing has never let me down but its only purpose is dump in ground coffee and shit out nectar of the Gods. So having some control over temperature would really be awesome in the future if I were to change out systems.

I have the below coffee device as well, it is the best. Look for it to get sub-$100 if you feel like waiting a month. I've been much happier since this device entered my domicile. The mrs love it too, and always thanks me for bringing it into the home. I just tell her I love her and that I wouldnt subject her to a lesser coffee experience.

I have a fantastic drip Ninja maker I just love. Even just does the one cup as well.

In my experience buying beans and grinding them yourself will always taste better than the espresso coffee from those machines. Of course it's not as fast or practical but it is what it is.

Better coffee, freshly roasted and freshly ground, really makes the biggest difference and not hardware.
The next biggest difference is using softer water.

Hardware is where you go chasing the few percent improvement.
I was using a relatively simple French press that you can buy for 10 dollars for a long time.

It's much easier (more efficient) for pre-ground coffee to go stale because of the air contact. Whole beans, freshly grounded is always the correct answer.

V60 is easy as hell to get a perfect cup every time.

Pour over is the way to go, especially if you already have a grinder.

Look into the Chemex for larger quantities of pour-over. It's good for about 2 large mugs of coffee or 4 smaller cups.

This is what I have right now. I'm just gonna stick with it until I feel a need to drop some serious dough on something fancier. Might gift my leftover K-cups to a friend. I don't see myself going back to Keurig, but you never know.

Every time my Keurig breaks I just call them and explain I followed all their care instructions and it still broke. They’ve always sent me a new one for free (with super quick shipping too) even if it was out of warranty. I think they know the machines aren’t built the best and want to keep people buying the cups, so they don’t put up any argument with replacing them for free.

I also have a Hamilton Beach drip machine I got off Amazon for around $60 I think. I’m happy with the coffee it makes.

Did you register it or provide proof of purchase?

I’ve got a Ninja coffee maker as well. It’s pretty amazing and my wife ended up getting it pretty cheap from Kohl’s. The normals Kohl’s sales plus Kohl’s cash and shit like that. Think it ended up being $85.

No I just call. They use the serial number and can look it up somehow I guess. Look up the machine care instructions in your manual and mention to them you have been following those. I’ve had them overnight be a new one on a three year old machine breaking. Warranty is two years I believe. I’m always polite, but sound disappointed that it broke so easily and mention I’m might go back to using my drip machine since Keurigs break easily. My current one has been going strong for years so I haven’t had to do this in awhile, but I’ve had three machines total replaced in the past. It might depend on who you get on the phone though. Not sure what their actual policy is. Worth a shot if you still have the old machine.

They will ask you to mail the Kcup insert from the old machine as proof after you receive the new machine, but I’ve never bothered to actually do that.

might be worth it to try and dig that dude out of my trash tbh

Worst thing is they say no and you lose 5 minutes for the call. I’ve always found their customer service to be really good. My current one is around four years now so it’s been awhile since I’ve had a replacement. My original Keurig was a gift a long time ago and all the ones I’ve had since have been free replacements.

Nespresso. Don't look back. I told two of my friends/co-workers about my Nespresso machine and how much I liked it. They asked me a bunch of questions and gave Nespresso a shot. One dude got one from the original line; the other guy got one from the new line that was made for North Americans. I'm not going to tell you more than that. The rest is up to you to discover.

Trust me though: you will be impressed. You will also wonder why you were drinking that Kuerig piss water.

Cold brew, homie.

Less acidic and tastes better IMO. You can make a large amount and it’ll stay fresh a few days in fridge

Here's my coffee advice.

First of all try this thing - just make sure you use reasonably fresh ground coffee and follow the instructions to a tee. You will get coffee that has barely any bitterness. And this thingie is dirt cheap.

Myself I use Nespresso 90% of the time - great variety, original line also has unofficial pods by Peet's Coffee, etc. Also they give you a free recycling bag which has a UPS label on it, when you are done just drop it off at any UPS location.

Before I used to have several completely automatic machines - the coffee was decent but not great and they break down eventually.

Currently also have a top of the line Breville and I don't like it. Grinding/tamping is not consistent and water pressure is not consistent so the end result is often nasty bitter coffee. Every time I start it I have to play around with several shots to get a decent one.

In the future if I ever have time to play with coffee I'll get myself one of these.
