I just built a new gaming rig (was using an i3 sandy bridge from 2011)

Ryzen 3600
16gb ddr4 @3.6ghz
B550 Asus mobo
450w psu evga
500gb ssd for windows
2tb hdd
GeForce 1650 super gtx @ 1950mhz (brought over from old pc).

I purchased a Acer 27in 144hz 1080p 1ms ips display on Newegg.

It runs great, setup gsync, etc.
I look online and people say a 1440p is better and say 1080p is not good for 27in..


I then see the next day Newegg has the 1440p model of same monitor on a new 3 day sale for near the same $200ish I paid for the 1089p screen. The thing is this monitor is 75hz not 144hz

I could buy the new one and return the 1080p set and pay the 15% restock fee.

Would getting the 1440p be a good idea? I don't plan on upgrading gpu until a 3060 rtx or new amd gpu comes out in sub $300 price range. So I will be sticking to 1650 super for a bit.

I tried testing out ac odyssey using nvidia dsr factor and pumping up my resolution to 1440p (which scales back to 1080) for testing and am getting on high preset, 35 to 45 fPS. On the 1080p set was getting 50 to 70fps.

Other games like mount and blade 2 am getting 95 to 129fps
Older games I am getting the 144fps.

If I get the 1440p I know I will loose performance. Is it worth it? I don't play multiplayer and usually play rpgs. FPS, and strategy games.

Do you think I will miss the buttery smooth fPS I am getting on this 1080p display? This sale is $60 off and ends in 15 hours.
Not sure if I should take the plunge and do this or keep what is working good now.

Got 1080p monitor for $200, the 1440p ips @75hz is on sale for $219. Marked down from 280.

144hz is more beneficial than 1440p, but if you're mostly playing games that can't reach that frame rate consistently (which I imagine will be quite a lot on a 1650 Super), then it's something to consider. It really depends what you play the most of.

In your situation? Personally I would just stick with what I have, then later down the line upgrade to a 1440/144 and a card that can handle it. It's a really nice sweet spot to be in, I'm probably not gonna upgrade until there's a card which will spit out 4k/144 on games like RDR2 high, which is a little while away yet.

That's something I was thinking too. In a few years 4k gpus will be cheaper and monitors too. May be good idea to wait and use this monitor for now.

Depends what you're playing but stuff like AC Odyssey is gonna dip well into the low 40s I'd imagine. And yep, going back to low framerates sucks. Keep what you have for now, put that new monitor money into a savings account!

Depends on how you feel about the argument of frame rate vs resolution. If you rather have better frames than sharper visuals, stick with your current monitor, if it's the other way around, buy the new one.

At 27in, 1080p is fine, it's 32 and up where you really start seeing the blurriness of 1080p in comparison with 1440p. The RTX 3060 (which is what I'm waiting on) would be aimed at native 1440p (4k with DLSS) at 60fps with most next gen games. However, this means at native 1080p it'll do closer to 120fps, which the 1080p monitor would do better with.

But as I said before, it all depends on if you want higher frames or higher fidelity.

75Hz is worthless as an overall set refresh rate unless it has SOME form of VRR in there. If it does not and it's just static 75Hz then you'll find video content, etc, won't be smooth and have some stutter (unless you plan on ONLY watching old PAL 25fps stuff for the rest of time). With a GTX1650 too, yeah just stick with 1080p/144Hz, get the most out of games now at that resolution and push some older games into that 120Hz+ zone for proper high refresh rate gaming.

1440p 75 Hz as said above is useless and if you upgrade to a better PC in the future, it will be the bottleneck in your system. In fact for gaming it will be noticeably worse than 1080p 144 Hz.

Also you could argue that 3060 rtx card you plan to buy in the future will be a 1080p card if you plan to use ray tracing and all other bells and whistles.

Have you considered an ultra wide monitor?

2560x1080 works great with my GTX 1070, a 1650 should handle it well too.

It looks is amazing in-game and is fantastic for working, editing, multitasking, etc. It's a win-win.

1440p 144hz save the extra money you dont want to compromise on resolution or framerate. 1080p is just too low of a resolution these days. 1440p or above is the minimum for me.

144hz is only worth for really fast paced games or competitive games like CS (and I even have my doubts for that, skills are still more important)

On the other side, 1440p is not too different from 1080, and all the movies and shows at native 720 or 1080 wont look as clean.

If I had to choose, I'd go with the 1080 144Hz but for the resolution, I dont car about that refresh rate.

What matters most to you? Frame rate or resolution? I doubt that card is going to consistently give you high frames especially at 1440p. I always go for higher frame rate.

144hz and 1440p. Except no substitutes. Though I'd certainly choose the hight frame rate over the resolution boost. If your hardware isn't going to give you 120fps minimum, I'd go with the 1440 at 75hz.

I just bought this, it's slightly smaller than my current monitor but it's 240hz instead of 144. I've heard the difference is pretty noticeable

75hz is lulz but regardless of hz don't get an 1440p unless you have a high-end gpu to back it up. And playing @ 1080p on a 1440p is ugly as hell due to how they don't scale well. Get an 1080p144+hz monitor with g-sync and ure set.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Much better explained and diverse set of thoughts on the matter here than the few response I got on reddit (they all were resolution is king and 1080p is shit answers).

Going to keep the 1080p 144hz set. Now that I have off work for a few days I have been able to use it and it looks and works great.

My biggest decision maker was trying to play no man's sky on dsr 1.78 (I think it was that number) which simulates 1440p using nvidia drivers. I went from 60 to 90fps down to 17fps and even lowering setting didn't do much. I'd rather have eye candy and good fPS than a extra high resolution.

Plus some of you have pointed out that when I get an rtx card using those rtx features will push the fPS down too and I may as well be at 1080p. Think I'm going to keep this until 4k displays (which I hear can down scale to 1080p and still look good) are more affordable and gpus can do 4k /120+ hz for a reasonable price.

Does having gsync on supposed to cap fPS on the game like vsync or is that only mess with the monitor hz? I just want to know if it's working right. On old games I still see 300+ fPS and hz @144. I thought gsync made the values match so it would lock at 144fps/144hz. On lower fPS I sometimes see it fluctuate between different hz vales but they don't always match the fPS values.
Numbers aside it looks and plays great so I guess it is working and no screen tearing. I am using a monitor that isn't gsync certified but is compatible by using freesync and enabling gsyn through nvidia control panel on displayport cable.

Pretty sure gsync only works between 30-144fps. If you want a game to never go over 144hz just cap it in rivatuner to 143

Which caps all games at that.

however i don't really care much for the fps going over it. I rather have the added smoothness then gsync at that point. 300 fps > 144fps with gsync.

The 1080p monitor is better for your setup. If you are thinking about the future than maybe the 1440p one. If you don't plan on a GPU upgrade anytime soon(say with in the next year or so) I'd get the 1080p monitor.

Then when you do have the money, use it as a second monitor.

I have a 1440p 144hz monitor that was my main monitor for years, and then 2 years ago I bought a 3440x1440 120hz monitor that I use as my main and my 1440p as my second monitor. It's always annoying though, because my friends who never want to spend money on monitors are always trying to convince me to give it to them. My 1440p monitor I bought like 5 years ago for $700 is still worth $450+ or so. I always tell them they can buy it off me.
