EA Dropping The Ball With Next Gen

Sorry but we have to call EA out for a historic failure in terms of their readiness for "next gen". We know that EA has typically been one of the major companies in a new console generation with their staple franchises such as Madden, NBA Live, Need For Speed, Battlefield, Burnout, and more available in the launch window of most previous consoles. However, this year they are a virtual no show and seem woefully unprepared. Let's recap:
  1. Their EA Play 2020 showcase back in July was virtually void of anything next gen. The only bits they showed looked like something you would see at a conference such as Siggraph or GDC for a vision of what the future can look like. Considering we had new consoles (and GPUs) coming out this year, there was no gameplay and nothing tangible to announce in terms of next gen titles and release dates (Dragon Age looked super early)
  2. Madden and Fifa are the only games currently confirmed by EA for release on next gen consoles and yet a mere 3 weeks from launch we still have not seen any gameplay or any evidence of them actually running on a PS5 or Xbox Series console
  3. Why is there no next gen version of their premiere holiday title Star Wars Squadrons?
  4. Why is there no next gen version of the recently announced Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remaster?
  5. Where is the next gen console update for Battlefield V with Ray-tracing support (i.e. PC version)?
  6. Why is there no next gen update to Apex Legends?
  7. Where is the next gen Sims game?
I could go on about the states of Anthem, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Star Wars etc but you get the point. How could they be so woefully unprepared for next gen is pretty disappointing especially when other big 3rd parties like Ubisoft literally has Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Rainbow Six, Far Cry, Just Dance, and Immortals Fenyx Rising all coming within the first few months of next gen. :messenger_astonished:

EA are doing very poorly I have to assume their deal with Microsoft is because of how bad they're doing right now. Battlefield 5 was a flop, anthem was a flop and I feel like they're still recovering from the battlefront 2 fiasco. Apex legends has pretty much cratered though I'm sure the microtransactions from it are still their best source of revenue right now. They need to do something big but doing anything big is going to take time.

They are literally doing a complete engine re-write. Shit takes time.

There's a reason the next Battlefield is next gen only. Also one of the reasons Dragon age is also so behind in production, from my understanding they are trying to use new engine tools that are being made for new engine but shits not done.

I feel like EA is known to shoot themselves in the foot frequently. A lot of their latest releases have been their sports titles and they're all under fire, or have been for various reasons. So yeah, it's not unlike them at all. I just feel like their own idiocy is constantly catching up with them now.

EA has been dropping the ball for the past 7 years, this is nothing new.

I assume a next gen patch for BFV isn't coming because the game is a giant piece of shit and they are done with it.

Aside from their usual sports games what do they have that's making them money right now?

And yet , they are making more money than ever. 5 years ago they were trading at $74 dollars a share and now they are trading at $127 dollars a share. EA is not going to change a damn thing . Why would they ?

You are expecting to much from the next Gen.
Screenshots and streaming videos will not give you the same feeling like last time "next gen" was shown. The games don't look so different it are "just" small details and the overall better performance (hopefully) that will get better. We saw this with the streaming reveals. All the quality was lost due to streaming quality.

Patches etc, will come but you should really just expect, what you get from the PC versions right now.

All we do is call out developers and cry about how everything sucks. I wonder why some of you even game in the first place.

FIFA and Madden are their biggest revenue drivers, always have, always will. Most people here don't pay attention to those since sports games are not this forum's target demographic, but yeah, they are doing more than fine.

I do agree that they seem awfully unprepared for next gen compared to last time around when they had Battlefield 4 ready.

i remember when new generation meant a full overhaul of the engine for FIFA

the fact they havent shown FIFA 21 on next gen makes me think its just minimal improvements

EA drops the ball with everything other than hoovering up revenue from gambling addicts and compensating its executives well. (I did enjoy Battlefield One and still play it occasionally).

Edit: as noted above, their share price is quite healthy. You'd think all the missteps identified by the OP would cause problems but it's not showing up yet.

Same with the PS2, PS3, PS4 launch.
Fake news.

PS4 had FIFA, Battlefield, NFS, NBA Live and Madden.

All we have for this one is FIFA and Madden. And they've been missing in action. No details on what PS5/XSX will bring to the table. We got that last time (at least I know we did with FIFA, American sports not for me so I don't know what the revealed for Madden or NBA Live...)

Similar stories for the older consoles too. A third of the PS3's launch line-up were EA titles....

EA basically give up their AAA gaming business other than sports and Star Wars game, though their sports titles and micro transactions should be good enough to keep them growing. I’d rather they stay this way as every AAA single player campaign they touch usually ends in disappointments anyway. Rather those developers work somewhere else and create better titles.

PS2 had SSX, which I give you that, is a stellar launch title, but all the sports titles were terrible. I don't remember anything for the PS3 launch from them, or at least nothing that stood out. Battlefield 4 at launch for PS4/X1/PC came with a TON of issues across ALL platforms. It was quite a while before it was stable and working properly. And again, their launch sport titles are always last gen games with slight touch ups to graphics. With the amount of resources behind them and the eagerness of new buyers, they should be launch at minimum 3 or 4 quality games, instead we get last years version with better graphics.

I wouldn’t mind having the EA that made Mirror Edge, BF3/BC2, Burnout Paradise, Dead Space, NFS Hot Pursuit, ME1-2, Dragon Age 1, Dantes Inferno, etc. back. EA used to be pretty damn good at this. What the fuck do they do now? Sell casino spins to children.
Oh, absolutely. I'm from the generation that remembers the old cube-sphere-pyramid-logo - they were great back then. One of the best publishers/developers.

...but it's been downhill ever since. While Origin Systems did eventually end up being bought by EA (and later dismantled, naturally), I've always found this funny: https://casualaggro.wordpress.com/2...reference-to-how-terrible-electronic-arts-is/

EA has the problem that most of the games they release are mostly just skin packs for 60 bucks. Of course they have problems to offer something cool for the release of the next generation.

The sad truth.

As a publisher of video games, they're pretty awful. Their quality has been going down hill for a while.

As a business, they've never been better! They're making a lot of money off of very lucrative business decisions, and they're not having to burn a lot of money pushing the envelope. Best of all worlds for them.

It probably won't change as long as they can milk American football, soccer, and The Sims.

they are working on actual next gen games instead of wasting everyone's time with cross gen games with ray tracing support. you want the shitty bfv with ray tracing or a brand new bf game like this?

5ka60P4.gif

that comes out next year. i'd rather they stay focused on a truly next gen game than give us the same shit we have been playing since 2005 with prettier graphics.

Even the Criterion next gen game looks more next gen than Forza and GT.

EA is fine. they havent released many if any remasters this gen, and thats a good thing.

Good points and I hope you are right. I truly hope EA brings the thunder next year with some awesome looking games. I'm just saying this is weakest presence they have had at the launch of a new console generation....probably ever!

What's new? I didn't buy Madden this year, or last, but my friends are telling me it's a hot mess

Seen my cousin play on Xbox. Not at all impressed by the AI or animations

Same old shit

I actually disagree.

like Ubisoft literally has Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Rainbow Six, Far Cry, Just Dance, and Immortals Fenyx Rising all coming within the first few months of next gen. :messenger_astonished:

You mean Ubisoft delayed a bunch of last gen games to play on new systems?

So I think EA this time around is making the smart choice here. They are not rushing to add in all this bloat of last gen games and claiming "next gen", they are instead just waiting until those titles are actually READY. So last gen they did have a bunch of games ready to launch....did you really fucking forget how that turned out or?

.

I think the smarter choice is that they really do focus on BF6 and their other titles for fall 2021. Better to have quality when its ready, the launch last gen games with bugs and issues.

How could they be so woefully unprepared for next gen is pretty disappointing

Next gen is only launch 2020? Not anything beyond that? You think maybe you are reaching a bit here or?

"I'm just saying this is weakest presence they have had at the launch of a new console generation....probably ever!"

Ok...but doesn't that fucking show you that they likely are seeking to NOT DO THE SAME SHIT like they've done every gen? Last gen we saw EA make many changes. Rushed BF4 at launch, delayed BF hardlines as they didn't want the same issues BF4 had. BF1 had solid sales, but people questioned the season passes, BFV had free DLC no season pass. People questioned the season passes on Battlefront 1, Battlefront 2 had all free content in terms of maps. They actively made changes where it made sense to make them. This very much shows they are not just doing the same things with zero regard to feed back, clearly something is being heard as those changes would have NEVER been made if they had zero intent of listening.

So I'm not shocked at this launch as EA this gen has shown they will change things based on feed back. I find it odd for anyone to claim they are not prepared for next gen, when it was them that revealed Dragon Age next gen, Battlefield next gen, Need For Speed next gen, shit I would say the fact that they have them planned for 2021 and BEYOND shows this isn't the same fucking EA looking to flood launch.

Think about this instead of trying to find ANY reason to complain about this stuff. If they flooding this fall, you'd just have another post talking about EA rushing it, not taking it seriously, another gen another flood of last gen ports by EA etc.

As a long time Battlefield fan, I'm happy that shit is coming fall 2021 giving DICE TIME TO FUCKING MAKE a proper next gen title and not a rushed, last gen port.

they are working on actual next gen games instead of wasting everyone's time with cross gen games with ray tracing support. you want the shitty bfv with ray tracing or a brand new bf game like this?

This.

So I actually support that EA is doing this time around. They are not wasting time with last gen stuff. Their focus on completely on next gen and making a strong showing instead of jumping into this rushed mess and flooding the market with last gen games claiming to be "next gen". So if the team is working on BF6 for fall 2021, I have no issue with that even remotely. Folks can't fucking complain about how bad last gen's launch was with some of those titles and then get mad when the publisher actually addresses that by ONLY fucking focusing on titles for next gen when they are ready and not rushing shit out to get launch cash grabs.

C chonga "A third of the PS3's launch line-up were EA titles.... " Agreed. I'd argue this is against what EA normally does. This time around they seem to want to only reveal those necessary titles and focus on getting out quality then flooding the market at launch.

Thats true.....sooooooo thats probably why they decided to put more time in those actual next gen games and having them coming 2021 vs now don't you think?
a good move imo
i'm really curous what a more experienced respawn after the first game can do with jedi fallen order 2
i hope it's next gen only

Same. I was hoping for Titanfall 3, but after playing The Fallen Order, I want them only focusing on that IP. I think its very likely we end up getting both though as the other half of that team that did Apex might be doing Titanfall 3. So logic might suggest if they can do Apex and Star Wars at the same time, maybe they can do Titanfall 3 and Star Wars at the same time.

I think they will end up using Unreal Engine 5 too! Very hype to see what they do.

So the point about the level of revenue they get from their sports games is definitely noted. But that's not all they want to be, they launched their own game launcher for PC they have their own little EA access app and no matter how much sports games can keep them afloat they can't be happy that everything else they do is failing lately. It's not just about those games not making money it's about the level of investment they've lost and then the question of do they invest again in new entries and if they don't what do they do when they don't have solid franchises besides those. You can say they could rest on their laurels on their sports games but few companies do things like that especially not ambitious ones. The fact is they made these games seasonal content games with microtransactions because they want to make all the money and there's no way they're not planning a comeback to do exactly that.
