Star Citizen vs Cyberpunk 2077... What's going on?

CyberPunk will probably join The Witcher 3 as one of the very best games ever made. On the other hand I'm surprised a place like Gaf is still more or less touting Star Citizen.

Star Citizen is the most ambitious scam in the history of gaming thats for sure. Cyberpunk 2077 is just ambitious standard open rpg with branching story and detailed setting. Also Cyberpunk 2077 is not developed since 2012. 2012-2015 was just concept stage with skeleton crew or even less with the finalization of the contract with Mike Pondsmith. They started full production after Blood & Wine dlc for witcher 3 in 2016

I didn't think anyone on here is still buying into Star Scamtizen

We'll have the same talk when cyberpunk 2077-II comes out.
Truth is star citizen will never be completed, whether the fans like to admit it or not. Heck they sell virtual ships for THOUSANDS of dollars there and people buy it so why should they bother finishing it? Just make some new ships and rake in the cash.

Ok, now I get it. You guys just think "ambitious" means "bigger map"

Nope. I believe "equally massive" is literally referring to the size of the games being "equal". They factually are not.

Reizo Ryuu Reizo Ryuu "A bunch of planets generated by code, that are populated by prefabs isn't, by default, more "massive or ambitious" than something carefully crafted by hand" Yes it is bud, it will factually be more "massive" as in the fucking size is much more extreme then 1 city.

You feelings on what is made by "hand" has zero relevance to actual size of each game.

1 is about 1 city
1 is about an entire galaxy.

Your feelings on how that was made, if it was by hand etc is irrelevant. 1 game is FACTUALLY larger then the other, the thing its doing isn't normal and is not done by many games, if any to my knowledge that has ever even pulled that off.

A fucking city "made by hand" isn't brand new, its not a new concept to even remotely be acting as if a revolution has been started because "crafted by hand". Thats nice...most games are. That isn't a brand new concept bud. The fact that you can even reference AC Unity proves this isn't a brand new concept though....

Honestly rather than a scam, Star Citizen seems like some kind of money laundering or trafficking operation. Very rich people have given them a ton of money, and continue to do so. You would think they would realize they were scammed a long time ago. What are they really buying?

This.

The claims made by this team are so wild, its like Fable 5.0. We are talking about a game where an economy will exist between A.I and human NPCs, wars and shit, different species lol If they pull it off, hats off to them, but this title just sounds like Fanfiction thus far. How anyone thinks Cyberpunk 2077 is even NEAR what they are saying about Star Citizen is beyond me.

Your feelings
Nobody is talking about feelings, but the fact that you are so hung up on that, and using virtual space for the sole metric of how ambitious something is, and the tone of your posts, makes it clear you've got some "feelings" you need to work out before replying to someone.

Then according to you Star Citizen has nothing on No Man's Sky or Elite Dangerous because their universes are way way more massive than Star Citizen.

And trying to paint procedural generation as some kind of hard to do design revolution is hilarious to say the least. Nobody goes this route because you always end up with a large, repetitive, shallow world, impossible to be filled with satisfying content. No Man's Sky is a living proof of this - an empty shitshow nobody even cares about anymore. Star Citizen is quickly fallowing this route of 99%+ empty planets/moons which are generated mostly by procedural means. Yeah, not many people are into sightseeing simulators.

So tell me again how's an empty, bland, repetitive, big playing area created by code just scattering some assets considered ambitios compared to a more compact, lively, content rich area? It's just 2 different design philosophies. You think CDPR couldn't make some assets and procedurally generate a bland, repetitive city the size of the earth akin to ArcCorp?:pie_roffles:

Nah man, you are stuck on this "made by hand" somehow disregards that factually 1 title is bigger then the other. No one is asking your opinion on if you like how one is done vs the other.

1 is factually larger in scope then the other.

Thats it. Nothing to do with "made by hand" or you liking games made that way as thats irrelevant.

Its why you keep trying to change the subject as how on earth are you going to argue against 1 city vs a galaxy and then try to pretend the actual scope of the "city" is larger?

1 of these games is literally talking about an economy with A.I and humans. Wars shifting the economy in the game, different species, the ability to have different jobs to make money in the game. My god, even if we just talked about 2 games both in 1 city, by default what Star Citizen is trying to do is just waaaaaay too grand and massive to believe the game that has a ton of removed features, can't change from 3rd person to first person, doesn't have customizable cars, its not even BASE GTA, yet we are comparing it to a game that has so many wild features, its literally doubtful they can even make what they are claiming?

Why do you even think we keep seeing Star Citizen threads about it being a scam? What they are saying the game will be is unlike anything that has ever been entertained in a video game. Cyberpunk 2077 I'm sure will be a great game as I've had it pre-ordered since 2018 myself, but fuck no is that game doing a "star citizen" in terms of a massive wild scope talking about economies, aliens, different jobs, wars, planets etc. You are stuck on your personal like for a title to understand what is being stated.... This is much more then how big 1 title is vs the other in terms of just space, the thing Star Citizen is claiming isn't even remotely like anything we've seen before to the point of being doubtful that they can even do it....as to why we even see those scam threads lol.

Who here is arguing Cyberpunk 2077 just CAN'T BE REAL? A smaller city the size of Witcher 3 can't be real? Cars in a game can't be real? I'm hype for Cyberpunk too bud, but nothing they are showing is in some realm of "this must be a scam as this has never been done in a video game before"...

M MadAnon nope. never stated anything like that so....yea.

You never stated it except here...

You feelings on what is made by "hand" has zero relevance to actual size of each game.

1 is about 1 city
1 is about an entire galaxy. (It's not anywhere close to a galaxy but several solar systems)

You are telling that procedural generation - scattering of assets to create bland, empty areas equals more ambition than handcrafting an entire city. 🤡

No Man's Sky is entire Universe
Elite Dangerous is entire Galaxy

Star Citizen has a lot of catching up to do with their ambition.

Not really bud. Like I said " in terms of a massive wild scope talking about economies, aliens, different jobs, wars, planets etc" Nice cherry picking though. :pie_raybans:

Well, good thing then I never gave my opinion on what I "like" or not, but a factual is this your favourite word?statement on the difference in effort and techniques made between something that's auto-generated, to something that's been curated. Which is why the Notre Dame is something that was extremely ambitious to replicate by hand. Star citizen's approach to making "a notre dame", would be to take something like the google earth data mapping data for it, subdivide and optimise the mesh a bit and finish it with a bunch of nice looking textures.
Ubi could've done that and called it a day, but instead they had a single artist work on a single building for as long as entire games get made.

For something to be "ambitious", it's not about whether it has never been done or whether it can't be real, so if you believe in that definition, your perception of reality is skewed.
Something is ambitious when it's difficult to achieve; Notre dame was ambitious, Cyberpunk's curated world is ambitious, a "large auto-generated virtual space" is not by definition more ambitious.

Good thing its doing more then just that.

Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are the victims of scope creep. The scope of the project changed the moment there wasn't just success, but overwhelming success. As the game has bread success raising money the ambition has continued to grow. In fact they restarted development on a new engine. I mean that is one way to burn up a lot of money. Moving from the CryEngine to Lumberyard set back development. I am a fan of Wing Commander, and I want more Wing Commander. Chris Roberts games have always been fun to me and I want to play another one. But he like Caesar is ambitious. The game being released is a victim of its own success in raising money.

SQ42 is all I really want out of the project. But they just seem to have never made as much progress as they promised to make. With development that is fairly normal. I do wander if they are using an AGILE development approach, as I assume that would make the most sense for this type of project. Another factor is having so many studios spread out, probably does not help streamline the development. And they will delay some more, due to Covid. It is a built in excuse and they will use it.

Just my thoughts on Star Citizen. I sound like a Roberts apologist, but I am not trying to be,

Different jobs like go trash this rock for few seconds, pick up minerals and go sell them? Or go kill this randomly spawned ship and collect a reward? Such ambition, It's unreal. I can't wait for their repair job of "hold multi tool at this damaged spot to repair". :pie_roffles: You talk about that kind of ambition? Aliens? You mean like CP has uniqely designed and crafted gangs with members?

Maybe you don't get whats being stated. I'm not arguing what will be better or if you like one or the other etc. Clearly one is reaching for something much more grand then the other, regardless if they even get there.

So yes, a whole ass species is going to be much more ambitious then "street gang".

Pretty hilarious for you to assume these are some insane killer app features, when every MMO from 2004 and onwards has those server side automated features, even 2003's Freelancer had a persistent virtual galaxy for 128 players :messenger_tears_of_joy:.
Even funnier to think you apparantly have some kind of inside info of how "difficult to achieve -ambitious-" those automated processes are to implement for CIG; honestly says more about the state of their studio, than how ambitious they are.

But I digress, even if we take your automated-2004-mmo-features into account, it's not by definition more ambitious(difficult to achieve), than someone having to spent two years replicating a building in 3D space; it's on a different branch, they don't run parallel.

This. They even stated shit like wars and stuff would effect the economy in the game. The scope of what they are talking about just sounds way too unbelievable and very much sounds like a whole "feature creep" situation.

ripeavocado ripeavocado You won at Cyberpunk 2077 is releasing. Star Citizen be like "time travel being added to the game" (release date moved up from never, to more never)

Reizo Ryuu Reizo Ryuu Thats a great story. Thats nice. Thats still more then what Cyberpunk 2077 is actually do so... I'm sure it will be a great game, but its scope is limited and I'd argue thats a good thing. Its reaching to do something that clearly can be done as this isn't the first time we've had a game in a city with cars.

That....that isn't some wild concept.
