Clarifying HDMI 2.1 support in 2020 Sony TVs - READ!!!

That's ridiculously stupid - your freaking game division is launching new console this year - how the hell do you ignore hdmi 2.1 and VRR on all tvs except one.

Looks like LG is only company that get's what people want.

Vizio is reportedly putting HDMI 2.1 on all P & PX series TVs. So they are smarter than Sony too. 😉 Although I prefer Sony flagship TVs for my main theater room, I own several Vizio TVs & they are generally very good. The 2019 PX Quantum is a great TV (very similar to Samsung QLED) so with HDMI 2.1 the 2020 model should be a wonderful bang for the buck option. They're also selling an OLED for the first time in 2020 (also with 2.1).

Bought the Samsung Q6FN 55, and i'm very satisfied with. The 900F has quite high input lag, even the RU71000 beats it easily, but Sony image quality is considered one of the best.

Visio unfortunately is like Xbox and they are not interested in selling their products to people outside America ;)

A company that makes TVs and is a huge player in gaming isn't bothered to make sure that their devices are the best choice for each other. Weird how little attention Sony gives to gaming on their TVs.

Seems Sony doesn't care anymore. Their lose money almost everywhere. Mobile department, Audiovisuals department, etc.

Vizio's next-gen feature set is really robust, so great news there, but...

Again so that nobody's confused, "HDMI 2.1" is not the thing that matters when you're buying a TV. It's a standard of support, not a standard of feature set. That's what this thread is trying to get the word out about.

All of the Sony TVs have "HDMI 2.1" support, but it's all for nothing in this case. Their feature set is woefully lacking, and that's what people are angry about. (Partially because I guess we thought high-end features like VRR and 4k@120 would be ubiquitous once the bandwidth allowed it because they're big selling points in a market that needs a new drug, but also because these are high-end Sony sets and yet the "high-end" features that HDMI 2.1 helps incorporate are absent in all but one of the sets.) It's not that they're not "HDMI 2.1 TVs", it's that Sony sucks at building in the new features of the HDMI 2.1 spec.

In the case of Vizio, their feature support is pretty good. Like you said, P and P-X have 4K@120 and VRR (which they also extend include AMD FreeSync; also there's an "Auto Game Mode", which I assume is their ALLM support). The M series has VRR as well, but only for 60Hz max instead of 120Hz (which on paper sounds find, since 60 is what you want anyway for most couch players, but VRR is a math game and I would think you'd want more frames to divide across, would like to see the two in action to tell the difference? Sounds like the P Series are running 240Hz sets and the others 120Hz, so it's probably fine unless games actually push 120.) Then Vizio's budget line (which is the only range that goes below 50 inches) of V Series has no VRR and is missing the "ProGaming Engine", which may mean no 4K@120 as well. (Note thought that every Vizio 2020 TV, even that V Series, has "HDMI 2.1" ports, it's just that the lower models don't all have the horsepower to run the best of those features.)

Bottom line as always, look for "HDMI 2.1" to make sure you're buying something that's not going to be behind-the-times and lacking compatibility right out of the box, but be sure to do your homework well past that when buying a new TV.

If they have HDMI2.1 ports then features *could* be patched in down the line, even if they aren't there at launch.

For the "Auto Low Latency Mode" ALLM feature, maybe, but VRR would I would have to guess be something the visual processor would want to be programmed for from the start. (If you look at Vizio's TVs, even the ones that do VRR still have different capacities than the more expensive sets, though some of that might be down to the screen refresh rate?) So if it doesn't do VRR out of the box, I'm not sure it could be just patched in no problem later? And 4K@120, same difference, you need the more elite hardware inside to do it, not just software.

Not meaning to drag up an old thread for no reason, but I was seriously considering getting a XH90 / X9000.

Yesterday I did a bit more digging and it appears that HDMI 2.1 features are only available on 2 ports (HDMI ports 3 & 4). For many this may not be a problem, but if you have more than one HDMI 2.1. source device (i.e. PS5 and XSX) and also wish to use eARC you will be out of luck. When looking around I also saw that the Samsung Q90 only has one HDMI 2.1 port. It seems like it might be best to wait for next years models from all manufacturers when HDMI 2.1. is available on more ports (same applies to AV Receivers too).

🤷‍♂️

I'd avoid the Sony X900H/XH90 if you intened to use the 120Hz output, owners across multiple avforums have found its 4k 120hz mode to be blurry. See example here, Rtings have confirmed it and HDTV-test asked Sony who said that's by "design" to optimize for motion clarity instead of picture quality, their chipset clearly cant handle it and is resorting to image quality bandwidth downgrades to handle the 4K 120hz signal.

The best HDMI 2.1 display as of now remains the LG CX OLED provided you use it responsibly (because of image retention). 4 HDMI 2.1 ports, no blur at 120hz, no downgrades to image quality in game mode as most LCD's turn off some of their video processing to get lower latency.

I bought one last month, love it, great value for money and a great display for a mid range tv. As above there’s an issue with 120hz apparently, but as I don’t use it as a computer monitor and sit 8ft away to play games on it I see it as an non issue personally. I also only intend to use it with one console so the number of hdmi sockets is perfect for me. If you need more go look at LG OLEDS but of course you’ll be paying a lot more for those, otherwise wait til more TVs are available.

Oh damn about the Sony. Unexpected, and unacceptable. The Q90t is also rubbish with ghosting. Also mentioned on hdtv test, can confirm from personal experience.

I'm happy with the XH90. I want it for 4k 60fps gaming on PS5 and it seems like it will be fine! Almost nothing on console will run at 120fps for a few years.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that as it stands the CX or waiting for next years Sony models is the logical choice.

Problem is, you would want to set your PS5 to 4k/120 as the default output. Doesn’t matter if the game is 30 or 60 or 1080p within that.

The 120 signal would also reduce latency from what I gather. Bad Sony!

2020, bad year for tv upgrades.

Black Ops Cold War and Dirt 5 have 120hz mode. I'm sure more shooters, racing and sport games will have 120hz modes.

Bottom line if you want a Sony TV in 2020 thats take full advantage of next gen consoles, it's pretty much the 900H or bust.

This is a special level of stupidity from Sony.

It's like they are begging people to choose the LG X OLED series over the Sony TVs
Yep. I’ve ALWAYS bought and owned Sony TV’s. Up until about 5 years ago. I’ve bought 3 LG OLED’s since the . Latest one being the GX. Love it. My jew consoles are going to make that bad boy sing.

Christ glad someone posted this was about to buy a X90H, looks like waiting until next year would be the best thing to do rather than spend £1000+ on something that's below par.

Why are people so horny for 2.1 i mean goddamn. You'll play minecraft and sidescrolling games in 4k/120hz that's it

The LGCX is I think the obvious winner at the moment, But some of these reviews make it seem like everything else is shit and its not. The Sony 900h and the samsung q90 are still great tvs. Just not the best at the moment. I know there will always be people who can spot every significant difference in the pictures but I have never been one of them so Always if your able too go see these tvs in person before purchasing , dont just rely on online reviews. Maybe you will realize the best most expensive TV is worth the extra cash and maybe you realize Something cheaper is good enough. I got the Sony x900 and I love it and for the difference in what I paid at the time I paid 850 a little over a month ago using some Amazon Rewards) I used the extra cash To get a half decent Soundbar I am very happy with.

the LG OLED is on sale today for $1,399 for 55 inch and $1,849 for 65 inch.

i am going to return my x900h back to amazon. this blurry 4k 120 fps mode on PC is nonsense because PC is the only device in my house that can do 4k 120 fps.

Amazon is good about returns and their latest return policy extends to January 31st but I hate returning things and I cant even imagine repackaging this giant 75 inch tv.

Yeah if you're spending that much on something and looking at it that much, you want it to be right. Think I'll wait and see if the CX drops to £1,000 here in the UK around Black Friday, then might go for it. I was always concerned a bit about burn in on an OLED, but having watched some Videos (like RTings burn-in tests) I think it will be fine for my usage.

i have heard that LG's replacement policy is excellent too. Sony is awful because you cant even reach them during the pandemic and when you do they treat you like shit (At least when it comes to playstation). I read some youtube comments about how LG would replace panels for free even after the manufacturer's warranty period expired.

I got a x800, Sony can’t even put hdr on all inputs in 2019, not holding my breath for wide 2.1 adoption from them.
