I'd heard of this in passing during its zeitgeist and forgot all about it until the other day. I'm not a follower of Japanese animation for the most part - I enjoy animation generally and have seen a bunch of the higher-profile titles that get some recognition in the West. I wear my 'dirty gaijin' badge with pride.

I really enjoyed this.

All I knew in advance was that it was very well received and that it was a teenage body-swap movie. So my expectations were at 'Freaky Friday' level (the Lindsay-Lohan-before-bad-life-choices level, not even the Jodie Foster level). The foreshadowing before the opening credits kept me interested and as the film leisurely evolved from trite high-concept fluff into something richer, I was very happy to be taken along for the ride and completely at its mercy by the final act.

Heartwarming without being excessively schmaltzy. Recommended.

Just watched it while at work. It’s a fun movie and adventure, i loved the Sheik character and his friend. Ben Kingsley character needed more development, i remember this was my only complaint back when the movie released.

The Personal History of David Copperfield - Really enjoyed this. Quaint with some funny moments. Dev Patel is really good in this, then again the whole ensemble cast is.

Was fun. Real simple suspense throughout that kept you on your toes. The "preacher" kid was creepy as hell and the ginger psychopath was brutally believable. Makes me want to keep an eye on kids in public. Make sure they not about to murder us. But honestly I have no idea what this movie was about. Can someone explain it if you read the book? The literal Corn was evil? In the end it felt like a Stephen King story. Lots of build up to very little climax/resolution.

Edit: I looked into it. Turns out it was a short story that it was based off. No additional details really. Just less characters. Apparently as simple as a "demon'" was in the cornfield.

Moneyball was trending for a bit, so I gave that a shot.

Solid 7.5 type of movie. I’m not huge into sports but I was along for the ride during the 2002-2006 seasons. Good time to be a Red Sox fan. After seeing Moneyball I got the urge to watch some documentaries, including “Faith Rewarded.” As for the Oakland Athletics, I completely forgot that they had a 20-game win streak in 2002. That plus my Red Sox fandom made me realize how kickass that era was for baseball.

Miller's Crossing. I didn't really get this one. I've loved a lot of the Coen movies, including another around the time of this movie, Barton Fink. Miller's Crossing was very stale and boring. None of it's parts came together into anything very good to me. It's not thrilling enough for a gangster movie, dark enough for a noir movie, or silly enough for a farse. I can't see wanting to ever watch this again.

I finally watched Whisper of the Heart last night and really enjoyed it.

Outrage was a superb Yakuza film. Per the subject matter, it is super brutal (a few fingers get chopped). But damn if was not a fresh feeling take on the typical Mobster plot of backstabbing underbosses with delusions of grandeur. Solid story, great characters and fun action. Highly recommended for those (with the stomach) who have run out of traditional Mobster movies. Beat Takeshi is once again amazing.

Spoiler: If you like that..

Check out Boiling Point. Its also a Beat Takeshi Yakuza film, but on a much smaller and intimate scale.

I have the sequel "Outrage Beyond " on my server too, just haven't watched. Might watch it tonight if I don't do another Horror film. Will look give Fireworks a look, thanks for the heads up. As a certain bending unit pointed out I do love me some Beat Takeshi!

Edit Update: Watched it. Was actually pretty decent. A step down in plot and weaker characters, but better production overall. Story is just another way to repeat the "spider-web" of Yakuza back stabbing from the first, but is less convincing and telegraphed. On the plus side its more Beat Takeshi being a supreme badass and has less finger chopping (and when done its less graphic) Id give the first film an 8/10 and the sequel a 6.5/10. Both good fun if in the mood for some Japanese Crime stories.

The 2nd Edit: There is a third one! Outrage Coda. I have no idea where the story would be left to go after Beyond. But ill still be all over this as soon as I can obtain.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

Been a couple years since I had seen this, but already knew I loved it, but watching it again ... man this movie is so good. Even Keanu Reeves, yes I know he is the sore spot, but not enough to pull the movie down. The music, the acting, the set design, the effects, the little details I didn't even notice until this viewing like how they hide his reflection from the glass as he is walking around the shops of London. It has this great mix of medium and genres, some of it gives off a vibe like your watching a play, some of it seems like the old mid century monster movies, and it also plays like this ultimate love story "I have crossed oceans of time to be with you".

If there are any crazy people out there that haven't seen this, I would highly recommend it, but make sure you have the audio turned up so you can really take in the absolutely fantastic score.

I watched The Final Cut of Blade Runner again last night.

Each time I watch this movie, my appreciation for it grows deeper. It's story is told so well and I can think of no other movie that embeds you into it's environment as deep.

I've never seen the sequel, and after viewing this again last night, I decided that I don't want to. I know some of the plot points and have no desire to see those answers.

I got Outrage Coda and watched it tonight. Was about on par with Outrage Beyond. A completely superfluous story that is just a repeat of "And this time its over!". As with the previous two films it focuses around the backstabbing of the various factions within the Japanese underworld. Where this film departs from the previous two is the deemphasis on the business and traditions/code side of Yakuza and instead use that screen time for more plotting and a shit ton more "action" scenes.

Story connects well to the previous two with Otomo in S. Korea just like it was implied at the end of the second. Yakuza brings him back to Japan to settle the score with the Hanabishi clan (the new antagonists from the second film. The guys from Osaka that helped get revenge on the Sanno clan form the first film) So if you have been watching them all it makes sense, otherwise its just random less than memorable goons swapping posts hastily and violently.

Overall the Outrage trilogy was fun. I see my self watching them all over again in the future. However if you dont have the time, just watch Outrage and consider it as a stand alone.

Before that I watched Violent Cop, another brilliant Beat Takeshi film (yes I know I need help). A very raw police drama that gave me vibes of the Dirty Harry series. As a role reversal, Takeshi is a hard as nails cop who beats offenders (and Yakuza) instead of wasting time with paperwork. Just like like East Wood in the Dirty Harry series, Takeshi as Azuma will make you crack a grin often with his salty demeanor and quick wit. As a film it was a great production start to finish with a lot of picturesque cinematography. Not bad for Takeshi's directorial debut.

Thanks, you reminded me I had been wanting to watch this for a while (my backlog is only about ... 1,739 deep or so) and it was pretty darn good and you are spot on that its message resonates with 2020 on multiple fronts. Also nice that it wasn't a slog, a nice brisk 85 minutes, got in, told a story and got out. That is one thing I would fear with a remake as a lot of them have done that, it seems they always need to add an extra 20-30 minutes to flesh things out. But this told its story efficiently I think, you didn't need to see the lead up from years ago. They were able to explain it on the fly and you could see the tension between the people as he was running around trying to get help.

Rogue One

I think this the best Star Wars movie that Disney has produced. It looks phenomenal on my 4K set up and the final battle on Scarif is gorgeous eye candy. The aerial dog fights are exhilarating as well. Very impressive stuff.

The story is good too, and makes the Death Star flaw much more believable than the convenient non explanation it got in A New Hope. It's well acted with a good cast of characters. None feels out of place or annoying. I also like the non traditional approach to the premise, in that it feels more like a war movie than a space opera.

Too bad Disney couldn't follow up the quality of Rogue One on the big screen, but luckily The Mandalorian has picked up the slack on + where the tent pole movies failed.

So far Star Wars output is very hit and miss.

Probably my least favorite in the franchise. Rogue One just feels so cold and there's not a single memorable character in the bunch. I'm not particularly drawn to war movies and do prefer the more majestic nature of the other Star Wars movies.

I always say theres not a single Star Wars movie I dislike, but if there were, itd be Rogue One.

I feel my opinion is more of the outlier however

Watched Oblivion earlier and I thought it was pretty decent. This film clearly had a huge influence on Kojima and Death Stranding. Looks gorgeous on OLED in 4K also.

Watched this with the wife last night - absolutely fantastic film, Clint is of course brilliant but the villain does his bit too. The action scenes feel so much more tense than in modern films because they're so grounded in reality, with proper stuntwork instead of CGI bullshit. It's well-written, the plot makes sense, every location used fits and there's a reason to be there.

Rogue One and The Mandalorian are the only Disney Star Wars material that I've really enjoyed.

When Rogue One was sold as a Star Wars 'War' movie I was 100% on board. At the very least, it delivered the best Star Wars action that we've seen on screen - some of those X-Wing and Tie Fighter shots are incredible.

Personally I didn't mind the characters, I thought Cassian was a decent classic rogue-like character (definitely much better than someone like Poe) and K-2SO is easily a top Star Wars droid and genuinely funny in parts.

I hope the Cassian Andor show is decent.

I rewatched Inglorious Basterds. It may be the 3rd time I've watched it since it came out like 10 years ago.

It's surprising how much better it is than Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Every scene is just so impactful and the running time just flows by completely unnoticed.

Finally got around to sitting down and watching Vanilla Sky.

Very interesting movie. Thanks so much to kunonabi for convincing me to pull the trigger here.

This started out a little cold, maybe intentionally so? Then as the plot unfolded, and the reality and surreality of the film's universe began to unravel - I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen.

Much like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Inception, or hell - even Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Vanilla Sky is a movie which is anything but afraid to play with your perception of what is really happening.

Maybe a bit ham-fisted with all the nods of classic films prior, and dripping with Hollywood star power of its era - also this sorta works to its strengths. I wish they had left even more sorta open ended here.

Like kunonabi had explained, this is a remake of a foreign film... and I'm sure there's a bit more unanswered there.

This is a solid movie. Glad I got the DVD for little over a dollar. Maybe not my favorite Tom Cruise joint; both Minority Report and Eyes Wide Shut are very strong contenders (Edge of Tomorrow too); but this is legit kino right here.

Very pleased. Gonna take me a second to digest it all.
