I hate the Series S...

... but doesn't it basically exist to render at 1080p? What marketing BS are you talking about?

No. MS PR and their minions (Jen, Tom Warren, etc) made it pretty clear it was a 1440p machine to XSX 4K. This was the messaging they chose in order to quell fears among the hardcore that it was wholly underpowered and prospective buyers that could be afraid of investing in a piece of kit that would be outdated on day one.

I said it was 1080p from the beginning and believe MS should’ve been straightforward. This tells me they are gambling and don’t truly believe in the product.

Was looking through some old interviews with Mark Cerny and found this one from Gamesutra, it's about the customisations and design philosophy of the PS4 and I think a lot of this is very relevant for the PS5 as well.

I'd highly recommend giving it a read, here's the link!

The CPU and GPU are on a "very large single custom chip" created by AMD for Sony. "The eight Jaguar cores, the GPU and a large number of other units are all on the same die," said Cerny. The memory is not on the chip, however. Via a 256-bit bus, it communicates with the shared pool of ram at 176 GB per second.

"One thing we could have done is drop it down to 128-bit bus, which would drop the bandwidth to 88 gigabytes per second, and then have eDRAM on chip to bring the performance back up again," said Cerny. While that solution initially looked appealing to the team due to its ease of manufacturability, it was abandoned thanks to the complexity it would add for developers. "We did not want to create some kind of puzzle that the development community would have to solve in order to create their games. And so we stayed true to the philosophy of unified memory."

"To understand the PS4, you have to take what you know about Cerny's vision for it (easy to use, but powerful in the long term) and marry that to what the company has chosen for its architecture (familiar, but cleverly modified.) That's what he means by "supercharged."

I've been saying...
That XSS was their perverted way to sabotage the whole Gen.
They fucked their 1st party and fisted multiplatform third parties without lube and consent.

What's extra dumb is nobody buying the thing is gonna give a shit about 1080p vs 1440p lol

Half of the storage for one fucking game...
I think they are including the entire modern warfare game along with warzone with black ops which is probably 100GB.

I remember the warzone update being 20 GB on its own but the fact that the weapons and progression was tied to MW they forced everyone to download MW as well.

Now that Warzone will be tied to black ops as well, they will be forcing everyone to download MW+Warzone for Black Ops. It's the dumbest thing ever, but im guessing thats coming from Activision who want you to install the full game so you are more incentivized to purchase it.

We have no clue how much other devs were even using asset duplication. I think the only number we ever got was for Spiderman.. I could see that being the kind of advanced technique Sony used that not every dev used.

Beyond that, we have increased texture compression. Different devs might also be compressing textures different amounts.

And then we have the expectation of increased detail.. higher resolution textures, more detailed objects (people think textures are the only large files, the actual 3D models also take up a ton of space). For a lot of games the increase in detail will easily outpace the savings of compression or not having to duplicate assets.

And we are in the "cross gen" stage.. meaning assets should get bigger and bigger as games get more and more detailed.

Cerny mentioned back in the Road to PS5 presentation that one of the goals was being able to choose which part of the game you want to install, right? I have a feeling that a lot of that space is also Warzone data. You probably don't have to install that if you don't want to. I know a lot of people like Warzone, but I'm one of the few that doesn't, so I'd choose not to even install that stuff.

Once I beat the campaign, that will be removed. If Modern Warfare is included and I can delete that, I will. I have that game on PS4 and couldn’t care less about improvements on that game. I don’t usually do the survival stuff or zombies stuff either. Remove what ya can.

I don’t think the Cold War size is right.
The official account just tweeted out how to pre-load the game on every console and PC and this is the file sizes they listed. They said you can make the overall size smaller by uninstalling different parts of the game.

I wonder if that’s just Cold War. I mean, it makes the box for the physical edition stating the minimum even more confusing.
