Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which originally released in December 2017, is confirmed to have sold over two million copies. It currently sits at a total of 2.05 million units worldwide as of June 2020.

160,000 copies were sold in the last few months. The last official number we had was 1.92 million copies in December 2019.

Earlier this week, Nintendo revealed the latest sales for another Xenoblade Chronicles release. The May-released Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is currently at 1.40 million copies.

Here’s a chart comparing sales of Xenoblade 2 and Definitive Edition:

Cue another round of screams of “sexism! Objectification!“ from a certain crowd that probably never even played the game.

With a little better performance and some QoL adjustments, XC2 would be almost perfect. I haven’t touched it in more than 2 years, but it was such a great ride. I like the first XC a bit better in terms of story and environments, but XC2 easily wins on the gameplay side of things.

I feel 2 millions is on the low side of things, considering XC2 came out when there weren’t many exclusives on Switch. Probably too close to Mario, Zelda, Splatoon and MK8DX. Or maybe JRPGs are an even smaller niche than I think these days.

I absolutely love it.

I felt Monolithsoft was on the brink of oblivion during that Xenosaga debacle in the 00's, but it looks they've rebounded quite nicely . It means more Xeno games for the fans!

If you're reading this and you haven't played XC2, do yourself a favour and put even next gen aside. It's that good.

Mythra may be one of the best written female protagonists in JRPGs, IMO.

I need XB2-2.

Hello friend, have you heard the good word

I just can't play it, although I love Xenoblade Cronicles and replayed it on Switch recently.

I just can't stand the art style for the characters.

Ok. Art style won't change, but maybe later in the game they'll have an interesting development as the game continues ?

I just love the exploration of XBC games and would love to love this game, but I just feel the cringe when I play this game.

Can't wait for the next Xenoblade (be it Xenoblade Chronicles 3, X2 or something else) and this new fantasy IP they're working on (for which there only exists some official artwork they used when they were hiring for that project).

I remember reading in an interview around the release of Xenoblade Chronicles: DE that Monolith Soft have 3 teams, right?

well deserved. It definitely is one of the best stories I've experienced in a videogame. The slow start put aside, the way the story unfolds and how it ends just blew me away.

The Switch had a terrific launch year. So many stellar games. This game is actually the only one I haven't bought or played yet. I had to finish Xenoblade Chronicles 1 first. I am now finally very close to finishing it, so will probably buy XC2 soon. I've already listened to the soundtrack and it's very promising. I'm so excited!

Or should I dust off my old Wii U and play Xenoblade Chronicles X first? What do you guys think?

I own it but never got to play it. I know I'll need at least 100 hours to finish it, it's a huge commitment I'm always postponing.

You have to remember the first Xenoblade didn't even sold 1 million copies on Wii and it was a niche niche release.

Then we never got proper number for Xenoblade X on Wii U but i doubt it broke 1 million because Nintendo would say it.

Despite Nintendo keeping pushing the series Xenoblade wasn't a sure commercial name it seems Smash + Switch finally did the trick, maybe the artstyle being more Anime helped too, 2 million is an outstanding success any way you look at it

I agree with the other posters, it's a fantastic game and easily the greatest J-RPG on Switch, so it's very much deserved. Glad XCDE is on that same successful track and got more exposure as a result.

Seems a bit low compared to other Nintendo first party games. Specially since it's still on of my favorite games on the system. But as long as it was profitable I'm glad.
Looking forward to whatever new game Monolith does next.

Is it better than XC/XCX? The latter is just a concept that doesn't go much further than the initial pitch and XC is a fun adventure but not amazing.

Haven't played XCX.
But compared to the original I liked the story, world and locations better in XC1 (not that they are bad in 2), but I liked the gameplay and particularly the combat a lot more in XC2

Came out the same year as Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 DX, and Splatoon 2. A lot of competition. It definitely got overlooked.

Fantastic to see it doing well. My favorite in the Xeno series and among my favorite games of all time.

Really wasn't sure I was going to like it at first but after a couple of hours it just clicked and kept getting better from there. Loved the characters, the story was epic and the world building was absolutely top tier.

The gatcha system for the blades is the only thing that dragged for me, but the depth of the combat and the range of options with all the different blades is absolutely fantastic and incredibly satisfying once you get it down.

Monolith Soft games are among my favorite series. Eventually (hopefully before I croak) they will come full circle and we'll see how every game they've ever made ties directly to the Conduit/Zohar and how they are part of the same grand timeline. I have pages of theories scribbled down about how these games all tie into each other.

What's there to continue after Rex is in paradise with his 2 Waifu's? 👀

Forgetting Nia? Typical.

Fully deserved.

Just an incredible game from start to finish, would make a top 10 JRPG ever list for me easily.

I heard mixed opinons on XC2... I started XC1 but never finished it.

Is it worth starting 1 again (remake, or skipping to 2) for a classic Square Enix JRPG fan?

I'd honestly just say try out XC2 and see for yourself, there aren't many JRPGs I haven't played and XC2 is up there with the best of them. Definitely think you'd enjoy it.

So skip 1 and go ahead to 2? That works for me as my backlog is massive. Thanks for the advice!

TBH I think you should play 1 first. Some of the payoffs are more satisfying if you've played 1. And if you can't get into 1, I don't see 2 being much easier to get into as both of them have extremely clunky and convoluted combat systems and continue to throw tutorials at you for 50h.

Fully deserved. The game of the generation in my book.

Hope to hear some news what Monolith is cooking up soon.

I liked it quite a bit but it took me some time to get into the combat system. I remember it clicking for me after someone on 4chan equated the combat of XBC2 to a rythm game with all the auto-cancelling, art-cancelling, etc.

I am really looking forward to what Monolith Soft are doing next. They are working on two games, right? This fantasy action-rpg thing which we have seen concept art for and possibly a new Xenoblade game?

Monolith Soft has been expanding lately, so they probably have multiple projects ongoing. We know they are working on BotW sequel, but not much else is known. The next Xenoblade should also be in development, as it's their main series.

In my dreams they are working with Square-Enix to remake Xenogears.

2 games really! I hope they show it soon, it's been more than 3 years now since Xenoblade 2. I like the serie too but I wouldn't mind if Monolith could lower the sidequest count of their game. Or at least, making them easier to complete by removing some requirements like day and night cycle and do something else than collecting objective.

Would be better if running on a proper hardware. Game really needs it.

Yeah, it looks pretty rough on handheld mode. That it remains stunning even though the Switch clearly struggles with its global illumination system and texture streaming is testament to how amazing Monolith's art direction is.

Yeah the sidequest count was higher than it should've been. And Torna coupled this with the community system which gates your progress at one point in its story, which I found annoying tbh.

I also kinda hope they bring back the mecha stuff from Xenoblade Chronicles X in the next Xenoblade game. Maybe we're getting a Xenoblade Chronicles X2?

Oof, community system sounds like a chore.

Yeah they won't be leaving the Xenoblade series in the dark with these sells numbers. I'm also in for more Mecha !

Yeah Torna was pretty disappointing to me to be honest.I really didn't like the community stuff.
During the main game you hear about the previous war and it sounds like this other big epic adventure....but then you play it and it turns out it was like 70% just your group running errands for people. With progression of the few interesting story bits gated by boring MMO style sidequests.

And yeah, bringing back the mechas would be great.
I'd love the next xenoblade to be a mix. Keep the story focus of 1 and 2, but add the mechs of X. Maybe also go back to the art style of X (with less ugly characters though), I think overall it looked nicer than 2 and wasn't nearly as blurry despite running on weaker hardware.

Loved the game and really wished my gaming friends and family would play it. I put nearly 200 hours into it and nearly had everything collected character-wise. Can’t wait for the next game in the franchise.
