Sackboy: A Big Adventure - Review Thread

"An extra disappointment is that you are Sackboy and only ever Sackboy, despite Scarlet being a Sackgirl. Of course you can play dress up through the game, with some of the earliest costumes to unlock or buy being for Red Riding Hood and a punk rocker girl in a tartan skirt. We’re at a point now where girls, women and non-binary people should be able to choose to be referred to as Sackgirl, Sackling, Sackthing or a handful of other options in the cutscene dialogue, but there’s no option, and it leaves Sackboy: A Big Adventure feeling a bit behind the times."

I'm super-progressive, and yeah...I can't get behind that complaint. This is the titular character. It's like having Drake be called something else in a game titled Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. This complaint rings hollow with me.

According to some there are over a hundred genders so Sumo should actually have made a hundred optional characters. What a shame!

I never thought the LBP were ever really great games, but I've always found ways to enjoy them. They have a really infectious art style and some of the user creations are just insane. Glad to see the series still trucking. I could totally see a lot of children really losing some hours playing this. Glad it's scoring well.

Anyone know how the costumes and emotes with the digital deluxe work? Can I just buy them in game without the deluxe?

Someone can have my pre-order digital comic if they really want.

Couple of questions if anyone has time.

is this more 3D Mario World in terms of level design or Crash?

as an adventure. Is it more Mario or BanjoK?

how does the character control feel? I really struggle with platformers where the control isn’t highly accurate and spot on. Again. Compared to MarioO? Or looser like Crash?

one Note. Seems very expensive for a PS4 platformer?

We don't need games media anymore. They were dying before YouTube and now it's time to put them out to pasture.

Can you please answer my costume question then? Is there an ingame store or something for emotes and costumes?
As in microtransactions like previous LBP games? If so then no.
You unlock costumes as you play, and there is an in-game seller/store which sells costumes and emotes for in-game currency that you also collect as you play.

Edit:
About the pre-order costumes, there doesn't seem to be any way to purchase them as of now. There are 3 free costume add-ons in the PS Store but not payable add-ons so far.

This game is a gem with copious amounts of charm. They did an excellent job mating the soundtracks to the levels.

It also has one of the kindest difficulty curves I’ve ever seen. Incredibly kid friendly.

I broke down and bought it last night. Looks great and it is dripping with charm. The game play is very old school and fun. I'm glad they had some family friend launch games.

I seriously want this studio to make Halo games instead of 343, I'm not even joking.

Anyway I've been on a platforming kick this year (halfway through Spyro 2 now) and I would get this if I could get a PS5.

No Sackxir? Well then maybe I wouldn't get it if I could get a PS5

Reviewers are selling this one short. It deserves +10 on its Metascore. Nintendo levels of pure joy in a year when it’s never been more needed. Sumo could not have done a better job.

In fairness, Sony has also sold it short too and hurt it by only sending out review copies a day before release and leaving it at the mercy of critics who rushed through it before Demon’s Souls.

It starts out as a competent 3D mascot platformer. By the end it eased its way me into my top five of the year for the use of music alone.

The family of four that gets to play this together on their PS5 on Christmas morning will have the best day in front of a new console.

It's a good game, but the way. Not a new Rayman Legends or Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, but still. Just what I needed in these trying times.

Its brilliant, managed to drag my wife so deep into the PS5 that I haven't touched MM or Dirt 5 since release yesterday. ALL been on Astro and, since this morning, Sackboy. Its overtaken Astro so far as the familys favourite game. Such a stress free, feet up kind of game. I'm SO hopeful for this generation and the return of more of these types of games.

Awesome. Really keen to try it out, maybe tonight after some more demon slaying. Imagine it's a very nice "breather game" from something like DeS.

Hey guys, what’s the length and replayability like? That’s my main concern with no create and share mechanic. Better controls sound awesome, that’s all LBP has been missing IMO.

Thats exactly what it is. Its one of those "Go on then, just one more level" games

Quite high I would imagine if you want to collect all the orbs. There are between 3-5 per level and they can be easy to miss. Reckon me and my wife have gone through 3 hours-ish and have just done the first World and still have to go back and collect them all. Mind you, me spend a lot of time getting all the coins and costume pieces, so it can be quicker, but the whole thing is an absorbing time sink.

My wife and I have been playing every night for 4-5 hours for the past 3 days, and we're only a few levels into the third world. Granted, we've 100%ed everything thus far.

The only reason I haven't bought this yet is because I haven't played 3D World yet and I've been absolutely desperate for a Switch port.

Now that it's coming in February, I figure I should play 3D World first and then this afterwards as I'm worried it'll ruin my excitement for 3D World lol
