DF : Xbox Series S vs Series X Console Review: Can The Cut-Down Console Cut It?

When series s is like 199 on a black Friday in a few years I'd grab one for sure to play all those exclusives I'm going to miss. I like the system.

"The 12 TF monster machine." I mean, it's still really necessary overhyping the series X ? Even after all that chaos of the last days? Of course the Xbox fan overreact when see the same performance on ps5. Until site like this, which should be about tech analysis, are so invested to feed such exaperate narrative, console war will never end.

what a dumb human being.

*that moment where you have to choose between a many hour long tutorial for crusader kings and a DF review* i'll watch this tomorrow

I don't get this.

What the fuck is Richard on about with this line?

Isn't head to head performance literally what DF is about? I don't get this
i think it makes perfect sense, he's saying that half the industry is declining to do a straightup exclusive title boxing match, and instead the main narrative will be about stuff other than performance, etc, it'll be more about gamepass value and stuff.. I mean, i dunno if that's true, but it's a reasonably conclusion to draw~

Digital Foundry's job is to tell me which console plays which game best. What are the inherent issues (if ever) and which performance modes to favour. I don't want to hear about fucking gamepass value and other shit not pertaining to how games perform on different hardware platforms.

Sounds to me like Richard is on the pipe again.

Prices will not decrease, maybe 250$ by the end of 8 years. Series S is basically One X shrinked to save processor die cost, and invest it in better cpu and ssd.

Richard Leadebetter: "This will be a console war unlike any other because the platform holders have very different objectives to the point where head to heads on game performance and what not, are gonna be secondary to what's really going on"

Well isn't that convenient
Hahahahah oh really Richard?

I legit pity the fool who gets one telling themselves that this is a capable next-gen machine, more of a facsimile of the real thing if anything.

This falls squarely in the 'if you don't like it, don't listen to it' category... I mean, his video contains that stuff, so what if he gives a little opinion on the side as garnish? Ah well, whatever, it's your taste, fair enough~

I always have time for Digital Foundry. They just need to focus on the comparison between the platforms. What is this shift now to adding in things like gamepass value or PS Now value and why would game performance all of a sudden be secondary to some other mystery thing. I don't want to hear about PS Now value vs Gamepass etc. That I don't need them to be telling me. I could research that myself. What I can't do is measure framerates, framepacing, resolution changes etc etc. That's their job to do and what they are founded on.

This is what I'm getting at. They started doing minor reviews of games in their comparisons and that started a while ago. Never understood the change of direction into that field. As I say, they are good at what they do and that is measure game performance with good accuracy and it's why i subscribed to them in the first place.

It's odd that they say quick-resume doesn't work with Gears 5. I had no problems with it.
It wouldn't work for me, although my "upgrade" to the SX version was bugged and I couldn't get past the main menu as everything on that main menu was "not installed". Forza Horizon 4 doesn't work with quick resume either for me.

That's strange. It would spit me right back into the game.

Man Richard praising and recommending this low spec machine this much goes against everything DF is about.

If it were a lot cheaper then great but the bang for your buck value of the Series S isn't even that good either.

I'd argue it's a pointless and bizarre to point considering the industry was never about which platform had the best gaming performance.

Where was Leadbetter saying this when Nintendo was dominating both Sony & MS with the Wii for four straight years?

This is what they decide to do instead of face offs?

I have to say it's getting a tad suspicious now.

Yes ok. Lets go into a thread that has nothing to do with ps5 and whinge about it.
We will make everything about PS5... We heard so much about GamePass, everything was about it for a little while, even tho we had a more valuable service on play station for years and years now.

DF waiting for those patches

They're looking for more games like DMC V and have probably reached out to Microsoft for comment so they can get some PR "explanation" for what is going on.

This kind of delay is not normal, they are usually very timely with this stuff. If they've got a legitimate explanation as to why the face offs are taking so long then fine but from where I'm sitting it doesn't add up at the moment.

Is there a comparison with Xbox One X? Would like to know how those two fare aside from the obvious SSD advantage.
Would like to see this too.

It’s still not very convincing that many XSS game modes couldn’t have been achieved on XB1X, minus some things like ray tracing.

Sea of Thieves’ 4K30fps on XB1X, but 1080p60 on XSS, is one egregious example.

I think at least in the backwards compatibility mode the Series S is relying on the One S performance profiles, while it could do 60fps, if the original OneS game didn't have the option for a 60fps mode then the SeriesS may not get that option either unless they go back and specifically work it in with a patch. That's my understanding at least.
They should allow the SS to use the XboneX profile imo.

Doesn't the series S run the One S version of games when in BC mode though?

That would explain the differences in those screenshots.

To get a clear idea of how the two systems perform comparatively we need to see a cross gen title running without RT. Valhalla might be a good candidate.

Its a cool looking little system, but not a good value. Its more of stop gap because you can tell in 18 months when next gen is in full swing its not going to be able to keep up. Developers are going to have to chose to put effort or probably put out unoptimized games. And by then with the price of 4K I think most people will have 4K sets and the selling point of 1080P gaming isn't really there.

I think if you want GP I bet that MS goes Xcloud and releases a cheap Xcloud streaming set top box and that might be a better bet.

I think someone would be better off saving money for another year or 2 and getting a Series X or PS5 at the time getting this and having to upgrade. Most likely Trojan horse to sucker people into Series X pro upgrade.

EDIT: It also feels a lot like Nintendo machine LOL. The way its underpowered to hit a price point.

Xbox SS and SX are different tier of console. So comparison makes no sense. Looks like a ad for the Xbox, get SS if you want this or else get the SX.
