So how is PS5 Backwards compatibility?

I generally play new games on PC, and with more exclusives coming to PC it sort of dropped my need for a PS5 (at least for now).

However I do have a stack of unplayed PS4 exclusives and I have a regular PS4 Slim (no pro). So I was mainly interested in PS5 to see what it could do in terms of BC.

Until launch it seemed the information was lacking a bit. Now that it is out has anyone tried it? Which games have you tried? What kind of benefits are you seeing? Is there anything that isnt compatible at this time?

A mixed bag.

Days Gone for example, looks absolutely fabulous on PS5. Its locked 60fps too. The game feels extremely good and kinda next-gen. But the load times are less than stellar. Its faster than PS4 but still slower than you will get used to on the PS5 (its like 10-20 seconds for certain things).

Crash Trilogy is 30fps trash. Unaltered.

TLOU2 loads quite a bit too.

RE3R, well, maybe it was my external HDD I have it on, but it glitched. Tony Hawk also stuttered like crazy. I should try those on internal.

A lot of games have near doubled framerates if they are unlocked/have that option. If the game has a quality mode you can usually play in that and still keep 60 fps instead of having to use the performance mode.

Some games like God of War 2018 and The Last Guardian need patches to unlock their framerates because updates capped it, but you can cancel the update download on PS5 and play the 1.00 version of GoW and TLG to get 2160p/60 and 1800p/60 respectively. Otherwise TLG is 30 capped and you must use the performance mode of GoW to unlock the framerate but its only ~1080p.

So a few more patches for some of the games should make them sing on PS5. Its really awesome imo, I am patiently waiting for a Shadow of the Colossus patch that removes the 30 cap in resolution mode before I replay that, and one for Gravity Rush 2 to unlock the framerate but thats a mental pipe dream lol.

The first comment here gives some information:

The place that has no nose also has a list up: https://www.resetera.com/threads/list-of-unlocked-framerate-games-for-ps4.322519/

I just tried it from the PS Plus Collection and the input lag was AWFUL. Is that just how the game is/was?

Crash 1 was really unpleasant but 2 was a bit better, still quite ass though. I know Crash didn't really ever have great responsiveness but this was way worse than the original trilogy on my PS3.

I don't know if 60fps will help that, but I hope so. Its way worse than 30fps games' general input lag, like missing jumps level of lag.

Also motion blur was really needed for a 30 fps lock, looks too stop motiony this way. Kinda glad I never bought it, but maybe PC solves these issues by allowing 60+fps and adaptive/fast v-sync.

Might get KH3 again. Its framerate was clearly unlocked on the Pro. Love the data battles.

I haven't played the game all that much on Pro but afaik its the same.

DaysGone is so good with that 60fps and everything else is enhanced tbh. I remember I played a little on PS4 Pro but PS5 version is just amazing.

I've tried Overwatch, which was exactly as it was on PS4, and Modern Warfare, which doesn't work. Like, it literally will not open. It's stuck in a loop of "Delete this app and reinstall", a problem I'm seeing a lot of people have.

So so far my experience has not been good. Luckily it's extremely limited and I'm not basing my full opinion on a bad first impression, but man that Modern Warfare bug has annoyed the hell out of me.

It's been amazing so far with the games I've tried. Most have good to great load time improvements. Other games like Monster Hunter, Genshin, Tsushima, etc are transformed into 60 FPS beasts and feel incredible to play. The PS5 is honestly the first time where I felt having a next-gen console on day one really paid off as a lot of already existing games are significantly improved, on top of the console UI being fast as heck.

Seems to be a mixed bag to me. A bit of a shame. I hope they can improve the experience.

Thanks for the replies.

Works fine, just as good at the PS4 pro or better for almost all games. This is the first generation we expect our bc games to work better than the consoles they were made for. So we should really try and keep our expectations correct. The games can only run as good as the developers coded for (aka uncapped frame-rates and resolutions), a failure to do better than what the developers intended is not a fault with the console's implementation of BC, but just with the nature of creating games with spec targets on locked consoles.

last I read the number of PS4 games that were not backward compatible with PS5 could be counted on one hand
