Sony confirms PS5 is getting VRR

Old?

Anyway, the PS5 FAQ has been updated to confirm that VRR is coming in a future update:

Does PS5 support VRR?
PS5 hardware supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR.

I guess we already knew it was coming, or at least expected it to, but yeah, there it is.

Obviously!

And many other missing features will be added over the next months/years . The hardware final specifications were recently finished and it will take time to build the software to support everything that is capable of. Until then I am happy and lucky to be able "too beta test it".

Good for the ones jumping in to the 4K now. Personally I’m not upgrading until the HDR format war is over or at least every TV supports both.

I’m just so confused as to how it isn’t, it’s part of the HDMI 2.1 spec and built in they intentionally had to ignore it for it to not be included.

Its over already, or it never even started tbh, HDR 10 is the standard and Dolby Vision will be used more in the future to help make HDR look good on low end sets. HDR 10+ was never a contender as every example you can find of it is almost indistinguisable from the regular HDR 10 version and subpar to the DV version if it exists.

So just don't buy a Samsung/their clones, get a Sony, Panasonic or LG since the higher end models all support HDR10 + DV in 2020. No need to wait mate, OLED will give you the best IQ overall but even an FALD Sony (Pana has no backlight LCDs anymore so HDR is pish on them and LGs LCDs are all IPS panels so even the backlit ones have terrible contrast compred to VA-type FALD LCDs) will give you lovely HDR.

What type of panel TV/exact model do you have now?

VRR doesn't just magically solve v-sync frame drops btw, it will always appear less smooth than actually locked 60 fps. Even in the video John from DF showed recently you could tell it was stuttering when he panned the camera, its 10x better but its still not the same as locked so I don't care about it right now, I would prefer devs to optimise their games properly but they love piling on those alpha effects too much.

Bugsnax is hilarious, when there are water sprays from geisers or it goes down to like 45 FPS, I really wished the reduced the quality of the alpha effects if they were going to stick with native 4K, PS5 isn't powerful enough to brute force through that.

Billions? In what currency?

Must be in Venezuelan dollars, they paid roughly 357 chickens for their TVs:

The amount shown there is the cost of a chicken, about 14 million VZ dollars.

VRR was delayed while it's TV's are being certified. Anyone trying to say Xbox had it only is just plain stupid or deliberately spreading FUD.

I've spoken in the past about how important VRR is and will be for generations to come.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Seriously how fragile and insecure are you guys? I'm making a fun post about ps vr, the majority are laughing at it, and some insecure person reported it and got deleted.

Insane how I can make fun out of xbox threads and everyone's having a laugh, but when it's about PlayStation you cry.

Take a fucking joke and don't be a bitch about it. How insecure can you be in your life?

This statement for the crybabies reporting my post. I love everyone else on the forum, including the mods who judged my post ❤️

KS then I'm guessing, do you know which one? Its written on the grey sticker on the back. If its not one of the top two models from that year (8000/8500 or 9000/9500) you'll get a big upgrade from getting a FALD LCD this year or next, or better yet an OLED.

PM me if you want TV advice in the future

HDMI 2.1 have been a mess for many manufacturers, not many TVs support it and most had/still have problems with it.

So, seems that Sony did the smart move and postponed full feature set until they have fixed issues etc.

Better to wait some time and release better working version than get bad rep for partially working buggy version.

People have managed without so far so it is not like it would be life & death situation anyway.

I ordered Sony A8H OLED and if the panel is good (LG panels have uniformity problems) I keep it, while it doesnt have 2.1 features other than eARC. I just see superior picture quality more important than VRR. And yes, LG model had both but I like Sony quality and "feeling". My 6 years old 1080p Sony still works perfectly, only reason I feel hesitated as it feels wrong to replace it when it is still working fine. But OLED picture quality is just so good that black friday deal made me do it

It looks like PS5's VRR solution will be different than what Series X offers as the FAQ clearly suggests that PS5 uses HDMI 2.1's VRR feature instead of Freesync, which leads me to believe that it will be available only with HDMI 2.1 displays. It is a shame really, I'm using a Samsung NU8000 that supports both VRR and Freesync (also has a 120 hz panel) but it does not have HDMI 2.1. So if I get Series X I can use freesync at 4K@60, 1440p@120 and 1080p@120 whereas I'll have no options for VRR on PS5. PS5 also does not support 1440p which is even worse, if I want to play a game on 120hz I will have to downscale all the way back to 1080p which is idiotic (I can go for 1440p@120hz on a Series X with my HDMI 2.0b TV).

Sony has always been unnecessarily conservative with this kind of features, One X/S supported 1440p whereas neither PS4s had not, even when PS4 Pro played most games on 1440p. I even remember myself using 768p resolution on 360 back in the day. With my current setup it looks like Series X is the better machine for me, wish it had some games I wanted to play.

How do you play games, with no sync at all? Or with a frame rate cap?
what... vsync prevents screen tearing primarily and the frame rate cap on consoles isnt something i have control over, if you vrr, you can turn off vsync

It’s a KS8000 by European numeration, which was a 9000 in US models I think. Thanks for the advice. I don’t like OLED but I’ll take your offer when I’ll seek for advice for the next toy ;)

Competition is good. As with external drives support, backward compatibility or achievements, just to name a few things the damned competition inspired our Lords at Sony to provide us.
