[Gamers Nexus] Weak Design: PlayStation 5 Thermals, Power, & Noise Testing

The thing is,we don't see what frequency ps5 was running at start and through the duration of his tests. 🤷‍♀️
I'll tell you what the frequency the PS5 was running at or should I tell you what you really want to hear eh? Your subtle fangirl attempts to cast doubt on PS5's capabilities. Your pathetic, worse than the fangirls because you should know better. You have any amount of excuses for SX lack of performance tho!

So this guy that everyone is saying is super legit is saying the APU temp is good and no coil whine, which puts to bed two of the biggest fud narratives lately. Now all the concern trolling will move on to that memory module which may or may not be too hot. And Sony already said that they are monitoring temps and will adjust the fan accordingly.

It’s obviously not positive with the video headline of “Weak Design: PS5 Thermals, Cooling, and Noise Levels”.

It’s VERY worth noting that this guy is a pompous ass who basically finds fault with everything and revels in negativity.

But I won’t personally be watching a 37 minute long nitpicking of the internal components of the PS5.

As long as the games are good and the thing doesn’t explode, I’ll be happy.

Someone is salty. /wonders why

This seems cute and all but i wonder how do they get to install those thermocouples without disturbing the heatsinks and heat contacts already in place to get accurate readings, seems as pointless as taking a thermal imaging if we are gonna be picky about finding the real temperatures of the silicon.

An exercise in futileness.

I did think that too, as soon as you open that thing up you are definitely affecting the thermal balance in there which makes the readings not entirely accurate anyway.

He said there is no coil wine in their unit, and can vary by unit. Don't twist words.

I'm starting to wonder if the vast majority of folk who say they have coil whine actually might be hearing the fans. I bet 90% of people don't know what it sounds like to be honest.

...

There are dozens of videos on the internet where you can hear the coil wine. Not saying that every PS5 has it, but it definitely is something that is real.

I don't doubt it chief, aye. But if the average person hears the term "coil whine" and then goes and sits with their lug up against the PS5, they're bound to hear something and assume the worst. ;)

People were claiming that EVERY PS5 has coil whine, even though I said that mine doesn't. Now here is a tech expert also saying that he didn't hear it. So clearly not every PS5 has coil whine. It's a lottery like it always is with any console or PC.

The console might work fine, but imo +90°C doesn't seem too good when talking about components longevity.

Haven't watched the video yet. Does the guy give any possible reason for such high temps?

That's a ridiculous notion. Risk overheating failures for awhile to fool people into thinking the console is quiet and then crank the fan up? Not saying they won't up the fan speed, but no way they would do this intentionally.
Well almost all were released in winter markets. Also pretty much the first thing they said is they will monitor and possibly up fan speeds. Wouldn't be the first time something like this was done to get to press early.

Ok? I never said any of that.

  • No coil whine at least on the console he tested, after that it is not impossible that it happens on other games.
  • Fan noise level is 33-35~dB at full load.
  • The machine's fan can run at a much higher speed and thus improve cooling further, but this will be at the expense of noise.
  • Quiet console.
  • SoC temperatures are excellent.
  • The heat dissipation of the memory chips is poor, however, so the temperature is a bit hot, although it is possible that for Sony this data is still quite good.
  • The side panels (faceplate) increase the temperature on the VRM, memory, SoC ... etc, by removing them we gain ~5°C.
  • One of the GDDR6 memory modules is thermally a bit warmer than Gamers Nexus would like at 93-95°C, but this is a package measure, so it is possible that the silicon itself is a bit colder than that. You can only be sure of this if you have direct access to the chip temperature sensor to find out the actual temperature of the silicon in the memory.
  • The memory cooling system on the back of the PCB could be improved in future revisions of the console.
  • It is quite efficient in terms of power consumption given its power.
  • In any case the apu temperatures are good and the same goes for the SSD.
  • Overall Sony has done a very good job of managing the fan noise compared to the older consoles.
  • Tests of the Xbox Series X are also planned.

I know that Sony have worked miracles getting something to perform so well with such good acoustics and within what is really a very budget conscious price for 2020 but surely it would have only cost pennies more to get all of the RAM running at such safe temps that it would never be a problem.

Yeah because place where the memory chip is so toasty, does not have the big heatsink on the other side of the plate.

Series X GDK (game dev kit) is still in development, devs have had less time with it, and it's new. The Series X is the superior console, unless you think Sony has managed to alter the laws of physics.

Superior console in what exactly,

Multiplay games where it matter---- that's a no
Ssd speeds--- that's a no
exclusive games---- that's a big fat no
A controller--- that's a no
Price, you can pick up a system that is 100 bucks cheaper and better performance than the x--- that's a NO

Tflops--- a metric which tech people are telling people not to use.

Please no more Dealer gaming podcast rubbish.

Big yikes. Could this have something to do with the decoloration on the case some poeple have been reporting?

And this is with a new console on winter... I wonder how they'll fare on summer and with some gathered dust.

Could this have any solution? Maybe temporary fan speed increase?

Well the issue which I am seein is that you need to take the heat of that place and radiated it somewhere, if you don't have thermal mass above it, just movie air does not do much, obviously it helps, however sticking there something like a small RPI type of cooler would help way more.

Doesn't matter the game, he got the power draw close to max which is around 230 watt. And yes overclocking becomes an issue when u can't handle the heat resulting from it and here the heat is handled great for apu so clock are just fine as they are.smart design rather than buying offshelf I guess and trying to brute force 🤷‍♂️

holy sheet, no wonder you 'doesn't matter the game' :messenger_open_mouth: :messenger_ok:

I just watched and it was astro! 95°C on the bottom memory running frickin astro! that is worrying AF

I hope this is just steve sample, or by tinkering and inserting his probes, that affected the cooling.

This would be good if it Shit on Xbox in every way, but that’s far from the truth.

Does it shit on it with 120fps backwards compatible support for Warzone and Rocket League? No. Xbox has vastly superior BC altogether. The Dirt devs have already came out saying there are problems with the Xbox version to be fixed soon.

Also, the value of Gamepss shits all over PS as well, as in proudly stands above it and dumps all over the PS. The differences in tech analysis between the games has been minimal at best too.

It does shit on it in every single way. The only thing the Series X has offered up to now, other than being a slightly better one x with zero exclusive games of its own, is a desperate list of excuses for why it keeps failing to live up to expectations. Xbox fanboys and the devs that Microsoft have deals with have been forced to keep making excuses every single day, each time pulling them from deeper within their asses.

It performs like shit with multiplats, has a bunch of hardware and software issues, has no exclusive games and is a glorified emulator to play old Xbox games.

Holy shit man... that doen't sound like something the average user is able to do to it's console.

Is there any possibility that his lectures are wrong? Really hoping so, because if not the system could fail at any moment, specially during hot seasons.

Look on the video, he is showing where the hottest chip is located, and above that is only that shieleding plate, not really that big ass cooler, so no I don't that he is wrong. It's strange to be honest. As far as I know MS has whole vapor chamber sticked to whole surface APU and Mem chips.

More compute units in the GPU and therefore more ray accelerators and shaders, faster CPU, greater bus width and more memory bandwidth. Not to mention hardware features like VRS, mesh shaders, SFS, and ML silicon that are not present in the PS5. Good luck.

add this: ps5 uses 100w just at the xmb menu! :messenger_open_mouth:
that is your 4k hdr fancy menu. wtf..

Yep, I'll check the video after work. Anyway thanks for all the feedback mate! :)

By the by, I think the "staining" on the faceplate is unrelated after discussion on here. Seems to just be the tooling and that it's a little thinner in that portion and you can see the black undercasing through it a little.

yes it is weird to see sony chose not to cool the ssd nand flash and the gddr6.
just a few dabs of thermal paste and spread to the steel internal chasis.

here is your nand 'cooling' in ps5... :messenger_open_mouth:
doesnt even have direct contact with the main big heatsink.

There is an issue with these for of "heat distribution" layer, that many times, components get's heated by this approach rather than cooled. What GPU was that, I mean I had...maybe 5780...I think there was this sort of distrubtion plate on back site on memchips and voltage controllers, it was really strange design and basically mem chips got heated to the point of artefacting by that VRM part. So I remove it, stick some off the shelf passive coolers on VRM and it was stable and like 15C cooler.

is there something i dont know here? 🤷‍♀️
PS5 is really efficient while sleeping.

could be wise to wait for the ps5 mini or pro. This choice of cooling worries me. Isnt a new guy was handled to design ps5 cooling? I like to see publication scrutinize him more.

sounds like a lazyboy.
do you mean SX 'sleeps' at 30w?
how weird, i guess that figure measured was still not deep sleep, but while turning to initial sleep.
