P.T. - the best demo ever made? an ARG meets Silent Hill

Recently I was thinking a lot about unreleased games (probably because I was just playing some unreleased Atomiswave games I got sent from a collector)....or games we got a taste of before they were ultimately cancelled; and you really can't think of a subject like that without thinking of P.T. and Silent Hills.

From P.T.'s announcement to ultimate reveal of being part of the Silent Hill universe the entire process was amazing and confusing and layered in puzzle solving. Even the fake studio invented for the demo reveal (7780's Studio) factored into the whole world building. I mean everyone knows Kojima loves to layer his games with hidden meaning and fourth wall breaks but P.T. somehow felt like the culmination of all of those wild ideas come to live as their own game.

Plus this wasn't even a main project for Kojima. This is him playing around to "see what happens"...and somehow what happened was one of the best horror experiences of the last gen. (still seems weird to call PS4 last gen)

I absolutely loved following along online as people unraveled the mysteries behind P.T. and finally "solved it" just to find out the entire experience was just a playable teaser for a new Silent Hill game starring Norman Reedus...and Guillermo del Toro was involved as a writer too? That's not something you get every day.

Plus people can't even agree on how the puzzles are finally "solved". I remember hooking up a microphone into my PS4 controller and talking into it because I read that might help. I have zero idea if it did but doing all these weird and random actions in hopes of cracking the P.T. code was an awesome experience for sure.

Then Konami screwed it all up like they always manage to, fired Kojima and cancelled Silent Hills. Probably made another Pachislot machine after that lol

But as far as demos go? Hands down IMO the best demo ever made.

I cant remember many other demos that never made it to final game status? Anyone have any other instances of that? I think the only other one I remember was Thrill Kill

No real spoilers look at P.T. :

I hid any real spoilers since you can force load this onto PS4 or play a remake on PC. Mods : if the link is an issue just remove this post and let me keep talking about P.T. lol

Nice work as always. P.T has got to be the most revolutionary game to never be an actual game don't you think? It's inspired so many games afterward. I hope Kojima gets to come back to it. Drop the Silent Hill branding and just make his own horror game.

Agreed. I just want to see a true horror game from Kojima. Whether or not it involves Silent Hill is irrelevant

I never played it 😬

I'm a big scaredy cat though, I mean I'm a man so I can do whatever I need to do but it doesn't mean my arse isn't making buttons the whole time.

Sorry I didn't see the 2nd post until now, how can I force load it onto my PS4?

The demo was really something else but I'm honestly not surprised it didn't pan out in the end. Kojima being Kojima I imagine he wanted to do the whole game with this many quirks and secrets so I can imagine Konami looking at this and saying... Man, this shit's never going to get finished. Better pull the plug early on.

Vick Vick might take umbrage that you'd call it just a demo.....Prepare for his rant.

----------------------------

There are copies of Thrill Kill that float out there in the ether. You can certainly play it. But I am struggling to think of demo's that don't pan out to at least a release.

Not this shit again...every 2 weeks someone makes a thread about a looping hallway demo could of been made into some epic game. As soon as it was out, people found out it was Kojima behind it just as he made before a fake game studio "moby dick". Then he got fired and that REALLY made PT popular because now its Konamis fault, the game is not being made (even tho it was made with their resources without approval and they got tired of Kojima bleeding cash at every corner). Then it gets announced its deleted from PSN and it becoms CULT CLASSIC BEST DEMO EVER....

Its a creepy looping hallway demo, get over it.

I can't fathom why we haven't seen a clone of it with a different name already.

He and Sony both have to know the gold mine that demo could have turned out. People were flipping out over it being removed from PS Store.

I am still fascinated that nobody recreated this marketing move to hype an upcoming game, create a very small playable teaser that you can play over and over again with different outcomes.

Shame the project was cancelled

It was a super unique marketing roll out no questions asked. Wish we had more stuff like that!

It's a really good and creepy looping hallway demo tho and honestly better than all the attempts to copy it (although mostly indies). I mean, can you point me out in the direction of all those other looping hallway demos that set the internet on fire? i know a couple of indie games that made something similar before, but P.T. was the first to really tap into the potential of the design and make people look at it.

I'm not even mad nor want a real P.T. As long as Kojima gets to experiment with his games beyond just inserting hollywood actors, i'll be happy. Death Stranding felt pretty out there too, in the AAA space i mean.

The fact that P.T. it's a cult classic it's not a revelation in 2020 tho, it's old news as they come.

Shut up and let people talk about games they like. Stop clicking on threads of games you don't understand the appeal of. Seriously buzz off you fly.
