Are there any drawbacks in setting RGB Range to Full and Black Level as High?

As above. Just watched Vincent Teoh's video and he suggests setting RGB Range to Limited and Black Level to Low.

Will there be any drawbacks in setting RGB RANGE to FULL and Black Level to High?

This is with regards to GAMING. Not watching blu rays etc.

Also I did some digging at resetera and Evil Boris posted this which I didn't understand

Some guy asked this

Sry to bring this thread back up, but whats the consensus with console gaming?

I always read "use Limited on consoles" and "Black Level Low on the LG OLED TV".

Why not set it to Full on consoles and black level high on the TV?

Evil Boris replied this
You can, but you’ll need to set it to low for the HDR mode as it’s always limited range there.

I don't understand what Evil Boris means. Does he mean that its ok to set RGB full, Black Level High for SDR content BUT RGB LIMITED and Black Level Low for HDR content?

Ehhh?

So on my 55CX I should set Black Level to ‘Low’ and on my PS5 set my RGB to ‘Limited’?

Does it matter about other settings (I’m not on game mode - too dark) - what about movies? Should it change for movies?

If you're on the CX, set RGB to Automatic and Black Level to Automatic as well.

I'm on the c9 and game mode doesn't have the automatic setting, hence my question.

I own an LG CX.

I like low and limited for devices where I might watch movies, tv, or video. Like my PS3 or devices that don’t fully support the newest settings like a 360 or GameCube through HDMI.

I’ve done full and high before. It’s “technically” more colors but in practice I doubt I’d notice it. That said I did configure it that way for consoles that I only game on like my PS4 Pro and my Switch

Of course you can set RGB Range to Full and Black Level to high. Just don't come back complaining about black crush in your games.

Does he? I dont think he does. He indicates that for 8 bit panels that would work but his suggestion is to use auto on all settings.

That's what AUTO on both devices will do. Setting it manually just means for stuff outputting in ycbcr then you'll ruin the picture due to a forced expansion of the colour range.

Game mode or PC mode should use RGB 4:4:4 as default which is 10 bit and he used the TV's info UI to display that.

Shouldn't black crush happen when you set it mismatched aka
FULL and LOW
LIMITED and HIGH?

RGB Full should only be used if you are connecting your console to a PC monitor. That's the long and short. Limited is for tv's. I know it sounds like you're missing out, but you're not. It's just bad phrasing.

How are you able to set black level to auto? There's only High and Low on my C9.

I'm in game mode.
What firmware do you have?

If you've updated to 5.00.03 you need to unplug your TV and do a cold reset. As long as my dynamic tone map is set to HGIG you should be able to set black to auto

Why would anyone use limited? Colors look washed out. Full is much richer. I dont get it.
You know.

I just tested Limited Low with Streets of Rage 4 as its a very colourful game and it does look washed out. Whereas Full/High really does make it richer.

Urgh. The dilemma....

I'm on 5.00.03.

Let me do a cold reset now and check.

And yes I'm on HGIG.

If you go into the TV main page (can't remember the exact name) and set your ps5 input to pc it will give it the full 4:4:4 for your ps5 and can use rgb at full

Last year when playing DQ XI. I tried setting it to low/limited on my PS4 pro and I realised there was loss of detail on the doors in the church interiors. And when I set it to full/high I could see details of the door clearly.

I'm trying to compare these settings on Bloodstained.

Imtjnotu Imtjnotu by cold reset do u mean factory reset? I'll lose my callibrated settings. I got my TV professionally callibrated.

Because most TVs (including LG OLEDs) are internally calibrated
for limited range signals, even though most TVs nowadays offer a Full RGB setting.

If I remember correctly Vincent Teoh also mentioned this in one of his last videos.
I am pretty sure it was the video where he explains the best settings for Series (S/X).

I wonder what is it that's making limited the go to for TVs. Like we're in the year 2020 already. Shouldn't TVs be made with Full RGB in mind?

Yeah I kind of don't know what I'm talking about lol....

All i know is what my eyes tell me and i never saw a single instance where setting colors to limited was the better option. I dont know if its "correct" or not, even so i prefer better than correct, whatever that means.

It's pointless. You're not getting more picture by doing that. It's an unnecessary step that only matters if you're connecting to a PC monitor that requires full range. It's a legacy setting. Limited, which is the default when connecting to a tv via HDMI, is correct.

It doesn't matter much anyway. Console players always set their shit up wrong on purpose because they only care about the picture being as bright and colorful as possible. Full range and torch mode is the norm. It should be a fucking crime, but as long as they can't change anything on my tv, I'll be able to sleep at night.

Ok so for those who advocate Low/Limited.

Why is High/Full wrong?

Because I don't see any black crush with High/Full. But I get details lost and crush in Low/Limited in DQXI in the church doors interior.

I've also heard about banding when you use Full/High.

I'm not saying you guys are wrong. In fact you guys are what the industry recommends. I just want to hear what's bad/wrong about Full/High.

Older devices like the Wii U that can't do full/normal HDMI black levels. You'll get washed out blacks or a very dark picture if the black levels from the source and the display don't match.

IMO, just set it up however it looks better for you. I think its a subjective issue, some people like more brightness, others like more sharpness, etc. I never follow guides because i'm never happy with the results. I always use my own eyesight and what looks good for me.

No not a factory. Just unplug the TV for a minute and plug it back in.

Is your ps5 input set to pc?

You've already said you don't care if it's correct or not. You're off topic at this point.
My last post was about crushed blacks.

And when i said correct in my precious post i used quotes because i don't think there is such thing. Why is washed out correct? Correct as in, what, reality? Maybe i'm ignorant but i don't see it.

Edit: Im only arguing about full range btw, not black levels or contrast.

There is such thing. What makes it correct is the fact that it's mathematically correct. Look up a video on YouTube about the color range or HDMI black range.

Limited for TVs is a thing of the past and there should it stay.

Limited RGB = more contrast
Full RGB = more colors

Just set it to your liking, (and the black level on the TV acordingly of course).

Also, dont forget to check in your console browser this

To check if you are actually displaying all blacks as they should.

It depends on your TV. If your RGB level doesn't match your TV's then it literally won't display the whole image. Dark colours will be crushed completely black in dark scenes and you will be missing lots of detail.
