Hopefully, it will be a similar outcome at The Video Game Awards next month. But I am afraid Hades will get the win over tlou2 since it's a niche indie game and the critic board loves those
You know what they love even more? Blowing Sony and ND. Those early review copies don't really come for free.

Nice fake news. Reviewers slammed days gone (cus it was trash) and they still ended up getting free copies. Same can be said for some other Sony games. Keep crying. The king is the king, and the peasants are the peasants, you lick Neil's toes of gold

If by "slammed" you mean giving it average reviews.
Its basically "We thought it was really bad, but we'll give it a 6 or 7 so our overlords don't get too angry"

And lets not forget we're still comparing a lesser studio with Naughty Dog.

This is GREAT because it further solidifies Naughty Dogs insane funding from Sony. What they create next will literally just look and feel real.

This is HORRIBLE because it solidifies that even if create a story that is objectively worse than anything they have previously made, (For me it was mostly pacing wise. I think the flashbacks should have been the build up to Abby's golf outing at the central climax of the story.) they still get a ultimate praise.

Basically, they can do no wrong.

Ok. What about the lost legacy. It got b grade scores across the board?

I was amongst the audience when they receiced the award for Ultimate Game of the Year, and Neil’s speech was as follows: “As expected. Let this serve as a slap in the face, a feminine slap, mind you, to all the non-LGBTQ worshippers out there and every single white, straight guy! With this game we, and the gaming industry as a whole, are one step closer to end the totalitarian misogynistic rule over society that has held progressivism back for millennia. I would like to take this opportunity to address the haters for a brief moment (Neil looks into the camera, angrily) I’d like to remind you to please provide us with a trigger warning ahead of time before you engage in heated, anti-semitic speech against anyone from our company or our fans. However, Don’t even bother to reach out to us unless your estrogen levels are higher than your tetosterone.“

(He breaks eye contact with the camera and continues ) “At Naughty Dog we always value identity politics more than any other aspect of game development. Our games will continue to reflect that and the people have spoken - *Shouting* “THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT! THIS IS THE FUTURE OF GAMING!“

Neil then proceeds to thrust his crotch vigorously towards the audience while frothing at the mouth: “HAIL ABBY’S ABS! THE QUEEN FOR ME, THE QUEEN FOR THEE!”

He then makes out with the gender binary host on stage.

I've said it here before here, but I think the developers are pretty warped -- because they constantly mistake empathy for sympathy.
Empathy being what psychopaths lack, and sympathy being what psychopaths usually use to try and use to manipulate people.

It's this concentration on sympathy, and demanding that you feel sorry for the characters that really irks. At no point in the game did I feel that the developers wanted me to actually empathise with the characters (as they continuously make bad mistakes at the determent to themselves and others) just sympathise with them making those bad mistakes -- but why exactly? Because I played the first game?
you have it twisted, the game doesn't push to sympathize but makes it an obligation almost to empathize. Your are forced to be in the shoes of character with which you don't sympathize. If it was the other way around nobody would've blinked an eye because we are used to sympathize with characters in fiction, but putting the player at odds with it's avatar it's something not done often because of how uncomfortable can be and how quickly can backfire with the audience not paying attention to avoid said disconnection.

Well what did you expect ?
Just like their big Idol, the Soyviet Union heaps Tribute on all Media that praises
the Narrative.
Just one more reason not to give a shit about any Game "Journalists" anymore.

Of course it had to win, because it was “hated” on by so many “toxic gamers”, so they needed to each a lesson to these “haters”.

How the hell is 93 positive reviews, out of 104, B grade scores across the board?
From what i've read the game is much shorter and rather mediocre, and it still manage to get that much positive reviews. If anything this just furthers shows my point.

One of my favourite games ever. Seriously amazing and while the story was something I wasn't expecting once it was completed it left me thinking about the game for days afterward. I've never had that happen with a story before. It's simply amazing.

I wish people would not reward the downgraded storyline and pacing, as compared to TLOU1.

The highs of the flashbacks with Ellie, were tainted with the Joel/Abby then Ellie/Abby hamfisted story. The flashbacks had the "magic" from the first game. while the rest lacked any at all.

I watched a stream of the game when it first launched. The game looked incredible and I enjoyed the first one but the narrative choices in the second one seemed like a mess to say the least. The Last of Us was one of those titles that didn't really need a sequel. I will confess that I thought the first game was a hair overrated as well. It was good but I didn't think it was as good as Uncharted. I still believe Uncharted 2 is Naughty Dog's best game and one of the all time greatest games ever made.

IMO game of the year is Persona 5 Royal. Animal Crossing would be a good alternate pick if P5R being a partial re-release invalidates it. I also think Ghost of Tsushima is probably a contender. That game looks phenomenal. I haven't had the opportunity to play it yet though.

My friend (He who shall not be named) is salty about Animal Crossing not winning game of the year and Fall Guys beating animal crossing in family game of the year.

I was laughing my ass off.

You heard wrong and it's the lowest rated uncharted game being an 84.

Still doesn't make it "B grade scores across the boards"

Mate, gaming companies only see reviews and awards as an extension of their marketing campaign, and since many journalists need conexions with said company more than the opposite, there isn't much choice but go along with them.

If Y company thinks there are critics who are "not doing their job properly", they'll be blacklisted.
Afterall, Y wants their product advertised, not sincerely picked apart and criticized.

I've argued enough about the plot and characterization of TLOU2 to conclude that had it been written by Shakespeare or any other literary giant the reactions would be exactly the same because it simply was not what a lot of people wanted.

Lets face it, most people just wanted more of the Badass Joel, and L'il Ellie story that they remembered. They didn't want something that actually engaged with the emotional reality and consequences of their journey, or to acknowledge that the worldview of the game is not one that accommodates happy endings.

Whats worse is how it got sucked into the current maelstrom surrounding representation and gender politics when the fact of the matter is that the game handles it in a restrained and tactful manner. Ellie's orientation is placed to the fore only once, at the very start of the game and even then its folded into a sequence that is more illustrative of the damaged state of her relationship with Joel. The way some people overreacted spoke far more loudly about their politics than anything the game had to offer.

From a gameplay standpoint its straight up superior in every aspect to the original, same for every technical category/metric I can think of. Its not a perfect game by any means, but treated fairly and on its own merits its a legitimate GOTY caliber production.

I would care more about the conversations. IF, people would ignore the opening 5 minutes, Joel's death, or the ending. I'm tired of people only discussing 15 minutes of the same old bullet points.

Please tell me how you can accept the other nine hours of cutscenes that did a literary disservice to almost every, single, supporting character in the game. Ignore Ellie and Abby and honestly say everyone else was done right to elevate the game's story.

Congratulations ND.....the narrative structure of this game kept me on the edge of my seat the entire playthrough...never experienced a game like it.
.....still don't understand the controversy around it.....something to do with lesbians and golf clubs I believe.....very odd, lol.

Congrats to ND, listen regardless of how I feel about the game (HATED THE STORY) it was a good experience definitely should be within the top 5 games for 2020.

Animal Crossing IMO should have won it.

The same award show that gave Fortnite GOTY over RDR2? Lmao. The award means absolutely nothing.

TLOU2 had an incredible presentation, don't get me wrong, but featured one of the sharpest declines in story I have ever seen in a sequel. I have literally no desire to play part three - which I hope they don't make btw - and even my love of the first has diminished substantially.

It's by vote, not sure why it's surprising Fortnite would win considering its popularity.

This is lunacy.

Strange. That is what happened in the story in TLOU1. It was not there at all in TLOU2. The story and characters were disposable and unbelievable.

Whats worse is how it got sucked into the current maelstrom surrounding representation and gender politics when the fact of the matter is that the game handles it in a restrained and tactful manner. The politics do not make the story and pacing poor. Nobody really cares. That is just a scapegoat for a poor outing in comparison to the first game.

I agree the caliber of production is 10/10. The story and pacing are a let down for some fans.

Qualitiy of the game aside, I wonder how much the next ND game will sell after such a divisive one.

Sorry, but your opinion is not a fact. Just because you didn't like the story that doesn't mean others shouldn't enjoy it either.

I enjoyed the game overall and your opinion won't change that.

No it’s a fact that it was bad. Glad you enjoyed it though.
