Famitsu Japan sales week 47: PS5 and XSX/S second week

Xbox Series X is quickly finding the usual place for the Xbox lineup in Japan, I see.
Japan don't want the PS5. Don't want games that PlayStation be offering these days too. It's not just about portability.

To be fair, a lot of Japan probably can't fit the PS5 in their homes.

Console gaming is dead in Japan. Japanese spend an average of 1 hour 19 minutes commuting (mostly on public transport) every day and they live in tiny boxes that cannot house a 65” TV and a big console. Handheld is the only way to go for them.

Only reason there was enough stock at the PS4 launch was because it came out in Japan three months later than the West.

Thats probably true, but like I said the momentum is not going to be there, and Sony is going to have to make a huge comeback after the holidays while Nintendo will probably drop Spaltoon, another pokemon, a Switch Pro and then they still have MK and Mario they can unleash.

Its like Sony is starting 10 yards behind Nintendo with this launch. Once you get behind and don't build up the hype because no one has your system or buying your games its harder to make a comeback.

Whatever the issue is I doubt that Sony was looking at launching in their home country, one they dominated at one time, with such abysmal numbers. Supply issues or not, its a bad play and they are going to have a hard time turning this around.

But we will see gamers can surprise. I am sure no one saw the Switch dominating after the WiiU. Sony can snag some strong Japanese games and they can get massive momentum maybe they can turn it around. But looking at the PS4 with sub 10 million vs Switch 15 million its not looking that way to me.

It’s just the nature of the Japanese market

it is nice to see it support Nintendo so well (and it feels appropriate), but the waning interest in home consoles is certainly sad

that said ps5 is having stellar demand and success elsewhere globally

Will be interesting to see how the ps5 fares against ps4 once stock is favourable

on the other hand, Nintendo has always been focused on their home market and that is good. It is nice to see the Switch be popular and not replaced entirely by iOS and Android mobile games

I agree in a sense, but look at Switch light sales. Its still being outsold majorly by OG Switch, even with the cheaper price point. The Japanese like the "Switch" aspect more than the pure portable nature of it. So I think there still is a desire for TV gaming in Japan.

To an outsider it just feels like Japanese gamers are not into Western style games that drive Sony/MS. All these cinematic AAA games along with the GAAS online BS is probably not something these otakus want from their home consoles.

Not sure why Microsoft even tries with xbox in Japan.. give up and focus on other regions

Ideally, a 5G capable phone/tablet will soon be enough to use Gamepass wherever you want. That's a huge selling point for the Japanese market. That's why Microsoft can't give up on the Xbox brand in Japan.

This. I don't think it's purely the handheld part but the fact it fills both use cases for them. My friend that lives in the Tokyo suburbs has a 43" 4K set but he's in the minority.

Switch is very obviously the king in Japan, but they are going to be running into the same issues as we are with PS5 stock. I'm sure if stock was easily found the numbers would be higher. Would it beat the Switch? No but it would be higher.

Ya I think Sony could have moved more, not as much as switch but I think get close to PS4 numbers.

We will see if this strategy of short changing Japan works out or if it will just put them in a hole they can't get out of. Japanese might just get feed up of no PS5 and since their friends aren't getting it, see no reason to get them when supply increases.

Momentum is important. The further behind you fall behind the harder it is to climb out of the hole.

Seems Japan doesn't care for either Digital edition next gen console that much.

Xbox Series X will beat Xbox One easily, maybe even in the first year. Not launching super late and with an original price listing above the competition helps.

The mid tier titles are going to be mostly Switch/PS4, for the next couple of years. With a couple being Switch only and some being PS4 only.

It'll be interesting seeing how many of them make it onto PS5. The next gen machine will get the blockbuster titles but I expect it to sell slightly less than the PS4 over the next 7 years.

The PS5 sales falloff seems fairly drastic.
Anyone got the numbers to compare week to week sales against the PS4?

Switch, never left beast mode!

Last year 1.3m PS4s were sold in the UK, it's a much more important market to Sony than Japan, especially when you take into account software sales. Germany too, France not far behind. That's why Japan got such a small shipment.

Yea, I can’t house 65” too, guess I should stop my console gaming and grab handheld. Not.

50” does it for me

I think they like the option to Switch but how many are actually “switching” to TV in Japan - that’ll be an interesting stat.
With regards to games, there are still a lot of big Japanese franchises. I think it’s just not into their lifestyle to play in front of a TV anymore.

I guess also have to take into account a game like Ring Fit that can't really be played on the light.

Its just interesting that the light lags behind. I wonder if a Pro version that still switches will do better than the light or if Japanese players will still continue to flock to the OG Switch.

This is backed by the PS5 games selling like absolute ass.
Yep, PS5 softwares are totally collapsed in the second week after underwhelming 1st week of sales.

2nd week sales
Spiderman Miles Morales PS5 - 3.2K
Demon's Souls Remake - 2.9K

To put that in perspective, those two games combined sold less than Splatoon 2, which is an ancient game. Combined, they sold less than half of Super Mario Party, 1/4 of Pikmin 3.

Do you know any store with available units? Do you know any console with a higher worldwide launch than PS4/PS5? Please post a link with a reliable source backing why Sony is supposed to lie instead of a meme.

Because by doing so you look like a dumb fanboy troll with nothing to back your opinion.
Oh sorry you described yourself you little gullible guy that believes every bullshit execs spread in the world because it is PR to skyrocket the demand to look good and it's nothing special to Sony or Microsoft it's normal do you understand now or you're still blended and live in a fairly world with unicorns and rainbows
Secondly I don't give a damn fuck about the sells numbers both companies can go to hell I'm neither an employee nor my life depends on them and stop accusing you dumb sheep

Ironically go into any Japanese electronic store and you will find tons of TVs that size and larger, and many do sell here. Size does matter in Japan but as someone who has lived in the tiniest of apartment you could find in Tokyo in the past before moving out to the country side, you would be surprised how easy it is to make room for things like the ps5 and big TVs if you really wanted to. And there are a lot of people who live in nice size homes here, quite a lot since they live in the suburbs, with houses with plenty of size. Size is important but it’s usually overblown regarding certain items.

As for consoles in general, they are certainly falling in interest in sales. But the most interesting thing is that the regular switch constantly outsells the light. And while many people play portable of course, a very big advantage for the Japanese market, lots of people playing the TV here too. It’s a popular TV Console especially for family games.

in my opinion Sony has carved out their own niche here since the fall of the glory days of the ps2 , but because of their focus on more hardcore gamers it’s going to be lower sales than the past in terms of install base. But still should hit PS4 levels. I’m sure Sony is happy with the sellouts in Japan, but if they can’t get more stock here soon people are just going to get frustrated and give up. And that will hurt them long-term. I know it’s frustrating me for sure.

They tried this before. It was called the WiiU, and the third party support quickly dwindled when they realized that no one wanted to buy Nintendo's PS3 four years into its console generation. The Switch is such a success because its Nintendo's own thing. That, and Nintendo's been releasing goats on a yearly basis.

Even going before this, each successive generation after the nes sold less than the previous, even though the N64 and Gamecube were more powerful consoles than the competition. Some of this had to do with how much of a douche Yamauchi and company were in those days, but more of it had to do with Sony snapping up huge chunks of third party, which Nintendo only just began to catch up on with the DS/3DS, and now with the Switch. Nintendo going back to that old rat race would see nothing but disaster for the company. Hell, Microsoft can barely hold their own in any respect but their gamepass at the moment and they have better relations with any non-Japanese third party than Nintendo.

He said a powerful console, the WiiU was weak.

The demand thingy was overblown.
PS4 sales situation
Stock problem = ~7K
Normal sales = ~11K

Same can be said to PS5 here, it's just a launch console demand. When Sony just sidelining Japan by allocating piss poor shipments size in the 2nd biggest market for dedicated gaming hardware during holiday month of course we're going to see the outcry of the console demand is bigger than the supply but in reality it isn't that big.

Japanese gamers on the biggest japanese gaming blog already speculated that Sony made a decision to create this artificial scarcity situation in order to portray the new PS console is very popular while purposely sending tiny shipments size.
Bad speculation imo. As you can see the current stock is enough to utterly dominate their main rivals who have sold only 28k so far. Sony diverted the other 200/300k to Europe and the US. Makes sense too because xbox at least gives them some semblance of competition over there.

Despite the low stock Sony have the gen in the bag already. Not since the wii vs ps3 has a traditional home console beaten Sony. But luckily for them Nintendo abandoned the traditional console space as they couldn't compete with the might of Sony or even xbox.

Portable was probably winning by less that 10%. Would see to indicate that people are overexaggerating how portable focused Japan is a bit. They act like people there are disgusted by the sight of a pc.

I think it could go either way. The way I see things here now, it’s the exact same feelings as the PS4 launch time. There will always be people who will go for the playstation brand and there is a buzz here for it. Switch has definitely done an amazing job here and it’s not slowing down, but I still think there will be an audience for the game experiences you can’t get on switch. And as long as they keep that audience (who also will buy the switch. as well) it won’t be a lost cause.

however the thing that will ultimately determine its fate is its recognition by kids. Kids here aren’t so big into playstation anymore. As long as that continues, the slide will continue for sure.

Despite the low stock Sony have the gen in the bag already. Not since the wii vs ps3 has a traditional home console beaten Sony. But luckily for them Nintendo abandoned the traditional console space as they couldn't compete with the might of Sony or even xbox.

If Japan wants portable then why are they choosing the Switch that can be played on a TV over the cheaper, more portable version?

Japan is still the 2nd or 3rd largest video game market so it is not irrelevant at all.

I think they like the option to Switch but how many are actually “switching” to TV in Japan - that’ll be an interesting stat.
With regards to games, there are still a lot of big Japanese franchises. I think it’s just not into their lifestyle to play in front of a TV anymore.
Sony really did had a lot of misfortunes for PS4 japan base.

Persona 5 released on PS3 first.
FFXV too western and confusing/incomplete story. Button mashing gameplay.
DQXI released on 3DS first.

And come 2017 Switch is released.

We're talking about the big next gen battle here between the two remaining traditional home consoles.

Xbox vs ps5 who will win?!

I've no interest in portable / mobile gaming in japan or elsewhere.

Big next gen?

Or next to nothing presence next gen in Japan.

🤭

Whether you like it or not, Nintendo Switch is the evolution of stationary console that conquered Japan dedicated gaming market in hardware and software sales.

As someone who lives here and is trying to find a PS5 I can say for sure this isn’t fully true at all. Everytime the system goes on sale for preorder at the couple of stores doing them, they are sold out immediatly, with one exception which I’ll get to in a moment. Everywhere else is doing lotteries and the amount of entries vs systems available usually come out at 100 times more than supply. People are frustrated they can’t get it here and want it just like those in the west.

And to give a good example of this, last week Amazon Japan open pre-orders again for the next shipment. I was able to actually get an order in and I was so happy. Turns out though a lot of other people did too, more than Amazon expected. Now most the people who ordered from that pre-order are being told their system won’t ship until next year. Which is frustrated a lot of people who thought they were getting their system in a few weeks. However it’s good they didn’t decide to cancel the orders. Because right now trying to win the lotteries is almost impossible.

Yeah lots of people talking out of their ass. Go into any store and there are no PS5s to be found. You simply can't buy one because there is no stock.

Unfortunatelly, Japan is really not that important of a market for Playstation.

PlayStation 5 is not just the biggest console launch in PlayStation history – but also the entire industry. And yet the tiny island is just a fraction of those sales.
Japan is the second largest country for Sony in the world.
The PS4 sold more in Japan than UK, or Germany, or anywhere else sans USA.
If Japan isn't important for Sony, then no where is important for Sony, except the USA I guess.

I love in threads like this, that specifically show just how expertly Nintendo have cornered an entire market and are reaping historic financial rewards from it you still get ididots coming in and saying "why doesn't Nintendo make a super duper mega powerful Switch wah wah!!"

Nintendo are absolutely murdering their competition in Japan with a slate of amazing and varied games all delivered through an incredibly desirable hardware solution that has been Videogame fans dream for the last two decades, a solution that gives you on the go and at home gaming all in one sleek device

Gotta a switch and 8 games already wrapped for my kids as one of their Xmas gifts. Can’t wait to set that up.

I couldn’t justify getting them BoTW, so I’ll get that in January as a little “extra” for myself.

Switch plus 8 games???
that’s super awesome dad (?mom) work right there

Your kids will remember that for the rest of their lives. My dad passed last year and I cherish those gaming gift memories a lot

tangent from sales age haha

I'm a Dad.

Yeah I hope that they like it. 2020 has been a tough year on everyone, kids and adults alike. So I thought a little treat was in order for them.

If Japan is the second most important market for Sony, why did they ship more console in UK instead of Japan?

According to UK sales tracker analyst, Sony sold more PS5 than PS4 in the UK which is over 240K in a week while Japan on the other hand has only 160K in 2 weeks.
