Doom Eternal Review Thread

Ah I get u. Probably work to do that and stuff like all the hooks into achievements.

Yep and I think there might even be the possibility of some sort of play anywhere integration considering it's now a 1st party IP.

GHG always knows what's up. So it's coming just not today, correct?

Yeh it's coming:

coming to Xbox Game Pass on October 1 and Xbox Game Pass for PC later in 2020

I wasn't that impressed with Doom Eternal when i played it, i much preferred Doom 2016, it felt like Bethesda wanted this to be a successful multiplayer game rarther than a SP title to me so they could add a store, i never felt like i was playing the story, just wall jumping from arena to arena with limited ways to kill the demons, i'm not getting the DLC.

Played for an hour. It's pretty fun, although I'm not a fan of constantly running out of ammo.
Keep going! The game keeps getting better after the start, specially when you get the double dash and the super shotgun.

The lack of ammo is to keep you on your toes, manage the ammo you have midfight and making you use the chainsaw (which fuel now regenerates)

I finished this a few days ago. It started really strong, loved the changes at first. Then it started dragging down and overstayed its welcome. Strange difficulty spikes, some bad enemies, too much jumping, etc. I'm glad they made a sequel, but they should probably not dip into this franchise again for a third game.

The game really strong hands you into the territory of using the chainsaw to get ammo, glory kills for health, and torch for armor. Before you know it you'll get it all down and it just comes to you and it actually feels really good when you do.

I'm a huge DOOM fan, so I have huge bias. I think DOOM Eternal is a great game, but I do think there were things in 2016 that I loved more than I loved in Eternal. 2016's approach just felt slightly more serious. Eternal took a firm "game" approach that Hugo was all about, which is fine to a degree, it just felt excessive. Like random platforms with spinning fire things that you'd see in a Super Mario Brothers game, not DOOM. But here we are! There's a lot more to it, but eh.

Then of course the approach they made with multiplayer. I thought 2016's multiplayer was fine, but I felt like if made in-house it could've been perfected and made better. But instead, that multiplayer was completely scrapped and we got Battle Mode in its place, which in my opinion is incredibly lackluster. Though they boasted about it like it was some revolutionary new thing that's light years better than the multiplayer in 2016, and IMO it wasn't and it's not.

I'm looking forward to the DLC for the game, cause I'm still interested in the ridiculous story. But I'm really curious to see how the inevitable sequel pans out.

Yeah, too much Doom would hurt the franchise.

Time for some Quake I guess, would love reboot with the victorian/eldritch settings of the first one.
When Carmack was at id before he left he said he wanted to remake Quake and stay hard in the lovecraft/eldritch setting. I hope that we get such a thing, that'd be SO good. I still want a DOOM sequel, but it'd be great to see id do another title that ISN'T DOOM, haha.

Doom eternal is a masterpiece once you get the gameplay and level design down. I am on a second play through Nightmare and I am plowing through Fights because I understand what to do and were to go. Dont get me wrong you will die but no were near as much as other games on the hardest difficulty. It feels good to not have an artificial difficulty spike. If you understand the game the fights can at times feel Easy/ smooth. cant wait for the DLC.

Yeah and people say this all the time, but the popularity of the Soulsborne games show that a proper lovecraft style Quake reboot would generate huge interest. The atmosphere would be similar, and you can build out the original Quake's hub world style approach to be more like a Soulsborne game and to differentiate from the new Doom games. Keep it more open and with more spooky atmosphere, but keep the fast gunplay. Especially after Doom Eternal went full-on arcade (which is generally a lot of fun for what it is), there needs to be some type of reset, at least to a certain degree.

i have to preface all this with the fact that im not very good at video games. but i played an asssssss load of shooters growing up and i dont think i should be having this much of a problem with making my way through a shooter... but here we are lol... and im playing on xbox if that matters... anyway...

im sure im going to rustle some jimmies with this but.... the fact is, i just turned it off out of annoyance and frustration. didnt even make it through the first level. and im playing on lowest difficulty setting lol wtf? gonna try again, but wth man, this is such a stark contrast from how much fun 2016 was and how perfect everything felt, form the controls to the difficulty to the pacing. this is... just chaotic and not fun so far. im so disappointed rn

anyone else have a similar experience and wound up getting the hang of it/enjoying it? any tips?

i mean, usually games get harder, so if this is the first level, i dont even want to think about what the next levels are going to be like. feeling like i wasted my money right now tbh :messenger_pensive:

ugh, this is not what i wanted to hear. did you wind up finishing the game? was it worth it?

EDIT: ah shit i shouldve posted this in the OT... i searched but somehow missed it

You gotta learn the combat loop and hop around to stay alive, especially when you arent powered up at all.
Shotgun by itself is pretty useless. think of it as a grenade launcher and you'll do much better.

Eternal and to a lesser extend 2016 feel more like action games a la dmc/ninja gaiden than fps.

I do think they have been a bit stingy with ammunition, but aside from the bugs I think the game is great and morefun than 2016, which was pretty static in comparison to this. The dash makes the combat much more fun and dynamic.

Running out of ammo is a bad decision and can't be even used as an argument because Doom 2016 don't suffer from that problem.

Are you playing Doom or some survive horror game? Running out of ammo is not what make Doom great by any means.
Then what does?
Running out of ammo is a bad decision and can't be even used as an argument because Doom 2016 don't suffer from that problem.
Running out of health is a bad decision, running out of armor is a bad decision, etc, etc.
They've added one more resource for you to manage mid-fight and you're throwing toys out of the pram.

You need to use the chainsaw on lesser demons, it'll give you a fair chunk of ammo and the fuel refills itself.

Yeah and that feels arbitrary. Those fodder is placed there for ammo, but to get it you need to play by the rules of interrupting the firefight, using chainsaw on them and continue the fight. This is what I dislike about Eternal, along with the amount of jumping, the stage gimmicks such as quicksand and lava. Give me 2016 any day.

I quit not long after the post you quoted. Loved the 2016 Doom. This one is just not good, in my opinion.

god dammnit... *sigh* oh well hopefully i have a better time with it. gonna try again tomorrow. at least i got it fr only $20. im really hoping i can get used to it.... but man, i havent been this disappointed in a game in a long time. i was 100% sure i was going to like it.

This game trumps Doom 2016. Probably one of the funnest fps in the last decade or so.

Game is a masterpiece, you have to actually use your brain a bit more in this one when dealing with enemies and ammo issues. Eternal relies on you also using the right weapon to get things done. 2016 you could almost complete the whole game with 1 weapon.

Doom 2016 was way too easy.

i wholeheartedly agree. I'm on my 4th playthrough on Ultra-Violence. This game is so addictive (love the glory kills) because the elements work so good together.

I'm not good enough for Ultra Violence but have completed the campaign twice and have now started the Ancient Gods Part 1 which I think I've nearly finished, playing it on my PS5.. I'm absolutely hanging for the next gen upgrade patch.

I think the issue is that for some people it can start off as a steep learning curve, its really not that hard when you learn how to move and know how to deal with the enemies.

If you hesitate and stand in one spot you are going to get your ass handed to you, keep moving around, people forget its an Arena shooter, its designed for you to use the surrounding area at all times. It even tells you how to deal with certain enemies as you go along.

it feels too chaotic. like, i didnt even die that much, but after every battle, i was left feeling befuddled like i didnt know what just happened. i didnt even feel powerful or tactical or like i did anything fun or meaningful. it was just
"frantic frantic frantic frantic chainsaw glory kill frantic frantic". i just couldnt get a hold on the game.

you know how some games just click and it feels right and its like every little thing you do is just money? yeah, this game is not like that. not at first at least, which is why im hoping ill get used to it after forcing myself to play through a few levels... but first impressions: it just feels... off, and not good or very much fun, despite looking like whats happening on the screen should be fun as balls... its kind of a bizarre feeling tbh

i also had problems with the aiming. im reading that there is an auto aim in the options which i will be happy to turn on for my next try. its just the movement and sticks are very slick and fast, but then they want you to hit these tiny weakness targets and i wind up just spraying bullets all around it. i want to pump demons full of lead, not try and hit there pencil thin weak point and stagger them. not a fan of that at all. i dont remember how doom 2016 did that (with weak points and whatnot), but i dont remember it being a problem, just remember it being fun as shit.

i also did not care how and where enemies spawned. they just seemed to come from every direction and i had no idea they were there (to be fair, this isnt much different than doom 2016, but i dunno, for some reason they jsut seemed to appear right behind you in eternal, it was really annoying and i noticed it happen several times in just the first level). id just be getting tagged and be like wtf where are you, only to realize hes just relaxing behind me punching me in the kidneys lol

i was playing on the lowest difficulty and just feeling like it was overwhelming and way too difficult. i just plain was not having fun, even when i didnt die and killed all the demons, id just be left standing there like wtf just happened? lol

im gonna try and sink some hours into it over the next week and hopefully i will acclimate. i really, really want to like this game. maybe i just really suck at video games but i just didnt feel it click and didnt feel powerful or even in control. it was just crazy lol

id suggest trying it tho. bc if you watch the videos it looks amazing! so there is really only one way to figure out if it is for you or not.

One of my favourites of the year, In the top 3 for sure with Ghost of Tsushima. I think it might get quite a few GOTY awards as 2016 got snubbed in that regard

I finished the game once and i've never gone back to it, or got the dlc since, i've read the dlc is even harder and more intense, so i would have to say no, it wasn't worth it, i was expecting more 2016 Doom with improvement's and in my opinion it was worse, and just a hard arena shooter with too much wall jumping, some may like it, but i didn't.

right on. thanks for the feedback. its sounding more and more like im going to fall into this category.

im wondering how much more enjoyable the game would be with paddles. im on xbox and dont have a controller with paddles, and although i didnt think about it while playing, this video made some good points about how much more difficult such a fast paced game is on a controller, and how its even harder on a controller without paddles. hes mostly referring to the higher difficulty levels, but for a more casual gamer such as myself, i think what hes saying applies to even the lowest diffculty

From what I'm reading it's just your play style you need to change. It is fast paced moving at all times. You have to think more in this one but it is overwhelming at first for everyone. Doom 2016 was far too easy, this is more challenging and rewarding.

There is a lot to absorb at first but there is a way to dealing with each enemy and you have to adapt your movement to the enemies also. I would say stick with it, I started off the same at first, you will get better. There will come a point where it will click. It will always be challenging throughout the game but the game is worth it.

And if you get far enough to face the Marauder for the first time, do not give up, you WILL think he is impossible to beat but he is easy when you figure out the pattern to beat him.

Sorry to say but that video is an excuse to someone who plays poorly. It's not the controller but the ability and play style of the person. These types of videos infuriate me because its someone blaming something else for their problems.

Ammo was not a problem for me, neither was the platforming which I actually enjoyed.

I guess I just didn't like the gameplay loop and the repetitive enemy variety. Weapon and armor upgrade system is a little convoluted for my liking. Characters and story are uninteresting and I felt like they were trying to do too much.

Another complaint I had was that the weapons just don't sound or feel "meaty" enough.

It's above average to me. Slightly overhyped. 7.5/10.

thanks for the tips and feedback! im trying it again in a minute. gonnna give it a few more tries through out the week, im determined to get better at it!

theres a lot i want to say in response to your posts, but i think it all comes down to this: i dont really care to be challenged much in a video game. i just want it to be engaging and fun (aka im a casual). doom 2016 was actaully pretty challenging for me, but not too challenging, and it was fun as shit! they really nailed the balance in that game.

doom eternal seems to be for the more hardcore fast paced arena shooter type crowd, and thats great! unless youre not part of the hardcore crowd like me lol then its not so great. not really sure what else to say. ive been playing video games for over 25 years and i cant think of a game more chaotic and punishingly difficult in the very first level on its lowest setting than this game

anyway, time to slay some demons. ill let you know how it goes, thanks again!

I finally beat it on PC and Xbox. I actually prefer the controller for the weapon switching.
Just started the DLC. I wasn’t ready. It is like the last few levels on steroids.
Cyber Mancibus? How about 3 at once?
Just finished a grueling battle? Here comes a couple of Mauraders.
In the standard game, I could always farm a few 1 ups but haven’t figured how to easily in New Gods.
Love this game.
I can’t wait for the next gen upgrades.

Just keep moving around and familiarise yourself with the current arena/area, its all down to how you use it. Keep chainsawing and glory killing the zombie and imp fodder when you can for health and ammo.

One thing I found is the Arachnatron(spider looking thingy) is difficult for some as they can't effectively shoot the top first with the sticky bomb on the shotgun. If you miss just keep moving and then try again when its safe to do so, don't keep standing there and try. Go kill some small enemies so you get left with breathing room. It's all trial and error.. The trick is to familiarise yourself with the area and keep moving if you miss, you'll eventually get better where you can try a couple more times before moving but right now you'll get your ass handed to you standing around too long.

Also enemies that run at you, don't be afraid to just keep reversing back out the way so you have breathing room to keep shooting them. If you haven't unlocked the dash yet which you want to do as soon as possible that will be your best friend to running away around the arena when things get too hectic.

The cyber mancubus is pretty straightforward, flaming meathook - super shotgun - blood punch - super shotgun - glory kill to recharge your blood punch.

Marauders though? Fuck those guys, they're honestly the hardest enemies in the game for me.
