Why The Xbox Series X Is 2020’s Biggest Gaming Disappointment

Eh. Try again, mate - I own every Playstations.

According to How Long to Beat, Spiderman MM takes between 7-11 hours for the main story + side quest, with the full completion (i.e., doing all the bloat-y stuff) in c. 15 hours, so about half your estimate.

As for Souls, it still remains a game that's 2 gens old at its core, no matter how good the revamp.

Bro stop dissing Spider-Man MM. It's a great game even it's only 10 hour long. It's definitely a must play PS4/PS5 game and worth purchasing a PS5 for a better experience. Also I wouldn't be surprised if this game outsell the next Halo game by 10 million, knowing the first sold 20 million easily.

I am gonna take issue with this part of the article.
A lot of this isn’t just the fault of the Series X. Maybe I’m finally too old to share the same exhilaration I did when I was younger and (more) stupid; perhaps I’m just expecting too much from modern technology which, by and large, does things I could have never dreamt of even ten years ago.

I am also in my mid 30s. I AM expecting too much from modern technology as the LOL emojis from Sony fans on this forum keep telling me. And yet the PS5 transported me back to my younger years. I was gleefully playing Astrobot, getting my mind blown by Spiderman's RT reflections... a game I eviscerated earlier this year for being just cross gen and I have now put in over 60 hours into Demon Souls in just under two weeks. I have AC Valhalla, Watch Dogs, and Borderlands sitting there waiting to be played and for the first time in I dont know how many years, I am legit excited to try out a game just to see how it controls on the Dualsense.

I think this guy is down on next gen because he has yet to experience the PS5 games. They are far better than the multiplats available on the series x.

I find the lack of understanding from these reviewers a bit troubling. Everyone should've seen this coming. MS literally told us last year not to expect first party next gen games in the first two years of the console cycle. We already know that multiplatform games traditionally skip the first 1-2 years so it was always going to be upto MS and Sony to deliver next gen experiences and yet no one bothered to take Phil to task for over a year. This guy has done a million interviews, and he was allowed to just spew ridiculous PR by these same journalist who should've had the common sense to know this is where things were heading.

No one criticized them for releasing the same exact controller. No one criticized them for the same exact UI as last gen. And now they are all regretting their purchase. Well, that's great but their job is to inform the gaming community and its already too late. This article needed to come earlier, and it needed some kind of response from MS.

MS AND Journalists failed gamers. You need someone to hold MS and Sony accountable and right now, only a few forum dwellers are doing that while Phil labels them all console warriors and dismisses their concerns.

The same is true for Sony though at least their execs dont complain about console warriors. I have asked Alex Battlestar Gallactica, John (Dark1x), Tom Warren, Imran Khan and Jason Schrier to ask Sony if GoW is cross gen or not. Even if they get a no comment, we get something from sony. Some kind of push back from journalists but nope, no one wants to do their job.

A remake of a 11-year old game and a 10-hour expansion of a prior-gen game. Doesn't really qualify as killer next-gen apps.

PS5 has the better launch line-up on balance, I think that's undeniable, but ultimately it's still lacklustre overall. Personally, I don't see any point of owning either of those new consoles until next Summer at the earliest.

Don’t underestimate remakes, just look how popular Marvel movies are. Those are just remakes of comics.

I can only speak personally but one of those exclusive titles was enough to sell me on getting a PS5 as soon as I can and I've also double dipped on a couple of multiplatform games that were on sale because of the excellent controller implementation (borderlands 3 and wrc 9).

Meanwhile on the Series X, even if I didn't also have a gaming PC, what's supposed to sell me on one? Quick resume?

This is the consequence of having no exclusive launch titles and being lazy with any tangible innovations. Even the UI is the same for goodness sake.

giphy-downsized-large.gif

So what’s wrong with the same UI? Phones do it and have small upgrades along the way, yeah the controller is cool and it did need updating if you ask me. The haptics are very impressive but depends on type of game you play.

Why would you need to double dip if you already own them?

Spiderman MM massively appeals to me but the other games dont, all down to taste

I feel like this for both systems, I also think it's a good thing. I just hope future games take advantage of this for the generation following as well.

The biggest gaming disappointment of 2020 is what happened to Resident Evil 3 remake, it's so frustratingly close to being amazing too, and they will never go back to that world again

Console launches suck on the reg to be honest though, and Series X is not must buy right now, it will be though

I have them on PC.

New phones come out once a year. New consoles are every 5-7 years, they are supposed to feel special in my opinion. The same UI doesn't make sense when the old one is designed around Jaguar cores. Why doesn't Windows 10 look and function like Windows XP?

Well 3 years with the mid gen upgrades and i am totally fine with UI getting updates and additions as we go, if it ain’t broke dont fix it. Wasn’t the PS4 UI very similar to PSP and PS3? Was ok then?

Yeh what was ok then doesn't mean its ok after you've used something that is new and improved.

The PS5 UI is a step above the PS4/PS3 one's and that's a good thing. It's not a misstep so I'd imagine going back to an older UI after using this one for a while will be quite jarring.

Stagnation shouldn't be celebrated. They have the resources to come up with something fresh but didn't for whatever reason.

I agree but to be honest both next gen systems were a dissapointment. That's why I sold my PS5, obviously Series X moreso due to having the same type of controller, not being more powerful in comparison to PS5 like everyone expected and lack of any exclusives coming soon.

The problem is diminishing returns, and not any massive game developed for next gen in mind. Yes Demon Souls was next gen only but that's a remake of a PS3 game, so restricted to the same physics, number of enemies, ai, same gameplay design.

The PS2/XB to 360/PS3 I was wowed straight away. The jump from SD to HD was noticeable. Oblivion was a great launch window title with detailed graphics and so open ended. Dead of Alive 4 graphics just blew me away. Then early trailers of Gears was just a massive jump. And the number of games that had online support was massive and the addition of XBLA games was something new.

360/PS3 to PS4/XB1 another big jump. I bought the PS4 with launch window game inFamous Second Son, and was just blown away by the particle effects and the sharp graphics and draw distance. Other new features like share button, live streaming were great additions it felt like a decent jump.

With this generation the graphics like better but there are diminishing returns, Spiderman Miles Morales still looks great on PS4 and the PS5 version while a improvement isnt mind blowing. The only thing id say is a nice is the DualSense the haptics and triggers were great. I also enjoyed the way activity cards allow you to go straight into a level for Astrobot without intro screens. However the Series X is lacking the new controller and activity cards to access different sections of a games, so I can see why people with a Series X are even more dissapointed.

who is saying there is stagnation? They have improved and continued to do so, ps5 got a revamp which is cool but that don’t mean Xbox UI ain’t good either.

so Sony used similar UI for 2 gems then changed it, Microsoft are in the second gen for this UI and it will get changes as it goes

It doesn't. But it looks and functions a lot like Windows 7.
The PS5 UI has a large number of similarities to the PS4 UI, mostly with a fresh coast of paint. If the PS4 UI was updated to look like the PS5 UI, the PS5 is now "less special" retroactively? What? Of course, the idea that we need a radically different UI for a console to "feel special" doesn't make sense when, in the same breadth, "only the games matter". Apparently, the UI being different also matters, now... ?

So it's not the same across all Xbox platforms? Do you get something new on Series X that you didn't get on the old consoles in terms of the UI?

Unification is a gift and a curse.

People who love the brand will like their new toy.

From the outside looking in it was clear to me this was more of a mid-gen refresh of the One X. That opinion is not niche - no matter how MS frames their marketing.

You might need to look up the definition of stagnation. The Xbox UI has been updated almost every year, sometimes it gets worse, sometimes it gets better.

If gamers arguments against the XSX boils down to:

- The UI is the same
- The games in the first years are nonexistent
- The console is a better version of the One X

Then I think you miss understand what MS is trying to do and the problems they have had along the way. If you have problems with the above points then a MS console is probably never going to be for you. That is completely okay.

Stop having the mindset of Product A is not the same Product B therefore Product A is Bad. My Argument is Product A has great potential but has not convinced me yet that it will reach it soon.

I understand that the timing of everything made it impossible for XsX to launch with a “killer app” exclusive, which is unfortunate.

I think it would have gone a long way if they even had a tech demo like Astro’s Playroom, like just something a few hours long with insane graphics showing off what the XsX can do.

Of course a new UI matters. It's all part of the overall experience being new.

If you want to spend $500 on a new piece of gaming hardware and for the whole experience to be the same other than improved performance then you'd be better off looking into PC gaming considering that's exactly what you get there only with performance that can't be matched by consoles.

People excusing Xbox's lack of innovation moving into this new generation are part of the problem. If that's what you genuinely want then you're easy to please and they will continue to do the bare minimum to get by.

Also I wish W10 was more like W7.

You might need to look up the definition of stagnation. The Xbox UI has been updated almost every year, sometimes it gets worse, sometimes it gets better.

I'm of the opinion that the Xbox One UI was a disaster at launch and they did little to tangibly improve the experience as the generation went on.

A new console generation was a perfect opportunity for them to completely untether themselves from the underpinnings of that old UI but yet they didn't take it. The primary reason is because they wanted to unify the user experience across the "Xbox family" of devices which is a mistake in my opinion. The Xbox One was not a successful product and they should have taken the opportunity to distance themselves from that product as much as possible. Instead they are making the experience mirror that of what you get on Xbox One which is the wrong message to send IMO.

did you on PS4 to PS3? PS3 to PSP?

yeah you get quick resume on the series x that you don’t get on older consoles

So we are right back at my original point in this thread?

And yes, it is difficult to go back to older UI's when the new one results in an improvement in user experience.

Again the Xbox UI does get major updates and gets them yearly. Look at how the UI started on Xbox one and where it is now. The PS4 was identical to when it started.

there is always lots going on, yeah the nee PS5 UI is great but that doesn’t mean Xbox UI is bad

Is there a digital equivalent of standing and clapping. Beautifully put and spot on.

I was amazed MS got away with shipping out a "more powerful" box with the exact same UI and a button added to the controller.

It really is one of the most boring console launches I can remember in recent times.

I know people are saying the PS5 Ui Is the same. It really really isn't, activities are a joy to use. It comes from a similar design principle as the XMB and the PS4 one but its definitely a step in the right direction its the perfect mix of PS3 and PS4 and it gives you a next gen new experience which is iconic and hugely important.

As someone who has both series X and Ps5 I'm not excited nor thrilled with either console. Both are within percentage points of eachother, each have their own pros/cons but neither are great leaps from last gen. Maybe it's because I'm a spoiled pc gamer at heart but both console feel like .5 upgrades than a full evolution.
I don't care how much any of you preech about the dualsense I will never love it. The adaptive triggers suck, they are annoying and distracting. Yes the idea is cool but I can't stand them so I turned it off. I love the feel of the controller but that's about it.
Series X is powerful on paper and I know it will produce games that will show that power off but eventually. I don't know if it's because of the tools being bad, late or just 2020 but I can't blame MS for how 3rd party games are being handled just their first party stuff and as of today there is no first party stuff. I can get on them for the terrible UI.
As for Sony We all know their first part stuff will look great and alot of you will claim it's all amazing but only time will tell. For me as of right now xbox is a 6/10 and ps5 7/10 . I don't regret my purchases but I wish they would have held both consoles until next year
As for the launch lineups neither console has a good launch line up. The Xbox is relying on last gen games for launch while ps5 has godfall which is terrible, MM which is dlc ( just admit it) and demon souls which is the only good "next gen" game available. So yes Sony's launch has these 3 big games but even this is a bad launch line up aswell even if you sprinkle in the other BS that was available at launch.

You didn't answer my questions - you just repeated yourself. The Xbox UI was re-designed prior to the Series consoles launches. A change for this generation was that this UI was also made available on the existing Xbox One consoles. Somehow, this means the entire console is now "less special". If the PS4 UI was updated to look like the PS5 UI, would the PS5 be less special retroactively? Obviously, the answer is yes, right? The SNES wasn't special either, because it's UI experience was the same as the NES's UI experience: neither had one. Right? UI matters, folks.

You're dismissing "improve performance"... when its literally the only reason new consoles exist: the new hardware. It is literally what a console is. Did you think that through before you posted it?

The Xbox Series X has quite a few innovations, so not really sure what you're on about there, either.

Surely, you mean you want Windows 10 to be more different than Windows 7, so its more special, right? Must have been a typo on your part there. Anyway... what are the specific primary differences in Windows 10 that you'd like to see be patched to be like Windows 7?

I saw the UI being the same complaint today and I didnt quite get it. The fact that I can access pretty much everything without jumping out of my game is a massive upgrade over the PS5 UI which took you out of the game and into the home screen every time. I can check messages and literally reply to them without leaving my game. I dont use activities much but I did use the help feature a couple of times when trying to platinum Astro bot and it literally knew the item i was trying to find in the section of the level i was in. Again, i did this without leaving the game.

I also really like how the PS store is no longer its own app. You just go there like you would any other tab. No loading whatsoever and you can just as easily back out.

I really like being able to attach video clips in messages instead of just screenshots and again, i love that the share feature is just built in. No more being taken out of the game to another menu. It's all there in an easy to use overlay. you can even switch games, users and turn off the PS5 from the same sub menu without ever going to the home screen.

the share screen and picture in picture stuff is absolutely insane. i actually used it while cooping with my friend in demon souls. the fact that you can actually play their screen is nuts too. I just dont see the PS4 UI managing any kind of picture in picture stuff.

I've seen more posts from Sony fans on neogad slating xbox then I have them praising the ps5. Is this a new form of esport?

I'll deffo get around to buying a ps5 next year or year after.... For now I'm super happy with gamepass. I've never had so much to play... Even though I constantly read 'lol no games' on here.

Is the UI being largely unchanged really a bad thing though?

On PS5 we lost folders, direct download/upload save says option in game menu, etc. I know those things will probably be added in the future but still. At least the XsX didn’t lose any system level functionality

Sony and MS approaches are simply different. So they focus on different stuff.

All things considered Sony has chosen the games to speak for themselves.

Why is it when Sony does something it’s seen as that’s exactly how it should be

they changed the controller this gen and Xbox is stagnating because they didn’t. Well was that the case with the previous few gems of PS controller because they were the same ?

xbox keeps the UI the same but Sony change theirs so Xbox again is stagnating, maybe it’s just working well and as it should be were Sony needed to major update the UI?

same with lastgen games, assassins creed u it’s ran better FPS on Xbox when there was a lot of NPC’s on screen so Ubisoft weren’t using the potential of the PS4 , not that Assasins creed Valhalla is running a few FPS better on ps5 Ubisoft are gaming gods.

why if something is good on PS like the nee controller of the UI then automatically Xbox’s is bad? Maybe they were just good befor and it works great as it is?

I'd also like to add that loading speeds are awesome and really does make getting through games new or old easier. How quick everything loads up on XSX and PS5 is great. I don't have a PS5 but I sure the load times are just as good if not better. l love quick resume (I've yet to have issues with it). I really don't see a reason to be disappointed in either unless you had high expectations of release games which like I said earlier... Release games are usually not that great.

Because unlike Microsoft, sony (and nintendo) actually have an organic, grass roots fanbase that genuinely enjoy their products instead of relying on paid for hire articles from Forbes and bloomberg and dont hire paid for hire shills to promote their product. Or as the Joker movie would say at the end "you wouldnt get it."

MS revamped the Xbox One UI at least 5 times over the course of its life, as well as a total change to Windows 10 halfway through. I’m not crazy about the current UI but it’s the best they’ve done by a long shot this gen (they were mostly awful). So the fact is they iterated quite a bit but they did it all on One. Unlike Sony which used the same UI the entire gen with some minor tweaks and instead used the new console to implement the things that MS would have over the course of the gen.

the problem with XSX isn’t the UI although I get why people would want a fresh and new experience from their new console.

Don't forget Sony fans claiming COD won because of 120fps but now borderlands 3 has a more stable 120fps on on Xbox.... Suddenly its 'no one has 120hz tvs anyway'.

Play the version on the console you have and just enjoy it.
