Our favourite movie of the 80s. (top 5 this time)

aight because it's favourite, it's easier since I can just go with what my 10-year old self watched back then, rather than some kind of "official" best-of
1 Ghostbusters
2 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
3 Transformers (1986)
4 The Never Ending Story
5 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Ok, I kid

5 Akira

I decided to go every genre gets a place. Otherwise, it’s be all action movies. And I also limited it to movies I would’ve put in my top five at the close of the decade:

1. Die Hard
2. Aliens
3. Back to the Future
4. A Nightmare on Elm Street
5. Spaceballs

That’s the one I will go with. Now, here’s another top 5 that would easily be my official top 5 depending on my mood:

Return of the Jedi
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Terminator
Wall Street
Ghostbusters

And yet another top 5 that could easily take my official top 5 place:

Top Gun
Predator
Gremlins
From Beyond
Full Metal Jacket

AND ANOTHER top 5 that could easily be my real top 5:

Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure
Short Circuit
Lethal Weapon
The Shining
Superman 2

This is impossible, but here goes...

1. The Goonies
2. The NeverEnding Story
3. Coming to America
4. The Princess Bride
5. Raging Bull

I'm not ashamed to admit that I had trouble leaving Dirty Dancing off of that list.

I'm so glad you chose Raging Bull over Dirty Dancing lmao

Shiiit tell me The French Connection isn't from the 80s... Oh good lol 1971 talk about an older movie than it seems
Might need to break this down into genre threads. Top 5 action, comedy, horror etc of the 8

You know mate, if you want, why don't you pick a genre an do your own little tally parallel to mine when the time comes?

Man I've already got a top 5 for the 70s made up purely of loved films i was sure were from the 80s

With the 80's it was a struggle because there are so many movies from that decade that I love. I have the opposite problem with the 70's. Coming up with 5 I actually like is tough.

Poor soul, The Godfather not your cup of tea? Chinatown? The Exorcist? The French Connection? The Day of the Jackal? Three Days of Condor? A bazillion other timeless classics?

I'm thinking I'll have to give all Temple of Doom votes to Last Crusade because it's superior in every way

Nope! Of those I've only seen the first hour or so of The Godfather.

Star Wars is the only 70's movie that would make my list for sure. The rest would be movies I think are fine but love such as Jaws or Alien.

If it means that to save Indy's honor I'm actually fine with that. The reason I voted ToD is because that was the one that was always shown on Dutch TV in the late 80ies/early 90ies. I think this had something to do with the other 2 having actual Christian religious references which the existing Christian broadcast organizations thought was a big no-no. Eventually they did play LC but they censored the head-rolling scene. But the heart ripping scene from ToD was fine! Crazy times.

As promised, here is my list.

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street

25930.gif

I think it is one of the best movies ever made. Wes Craven is a genius to me. Really likeable cast, great concept, and very rewatchable. Robert Englund is an icon.

2. Back to the Future

bttf-gif-3.gif

I love Michael J. Fox, and this is one of the best movies ever made. It is absolutely still so entertaining all these years later. Really feel like it's one of those films basically anybody can enjoy. Highly quotable movie, as well.

3. Scarface

f40709b991240e7fdc23385fa5abfc3d.gif

"Say hello to my little friend!"

Maybe my favourite Al Pacino role. He really is something else as Tony Montana. I love that despite the movie's length, it is very fast paced & exciting. The movie is easy to rewatch, and I always love revisiting scenes from it. It's not a perfect movie, but I really love it. The build-up to the film's climax is great.

4. Blade Runner

Tqg7Cgf.gif

I was tempted to put this above Scarface, but I honestly think I've watched Scarface more times. I love Blade Runner though. Harrison Ford is obviously great, and I'm a big sucker for the Cyberpunk genre. I love the special effects of this film and direction, Ridley Scott is class. I'm really happy 2049 was good as well.

5. Die Hard

die-hard-gif.gif

One of my favourite action films. I miss when Bruce Willis really put everything in to his roles, he really was so good in this. I love everything about this film. It has a great cast, great plot, doesn't drag and always lives up on a rewatch. It has aged very well. Probably one of my favourite movies to quote. Bruce Willis just kicks ass as John McClane, he's so likeable & someone you actually root for. I like when they make the 'good guy' of the film actually super likeable.

This was hard, but I can't argue with my choices. All great films. I could probably switch Die Hard out for so many other films, but I would feel bad leaving it out. On pure enjoyment factor, it is up there.

So far the only top 5 I love besides my own... actually I only perused the others because they didn't have cool images and write-ups so maybe I'm being unfair but you're cool by me.

1. Back To The Future
2. The Shining
3. The Terminator
4. First Blood
5. Child’s Play
1. Aliens
2. The Thing
3. The Wrath of Khan
4. Empires Strikes Back
5. Mad Max 2

Should be at least top 10 tbh.
I saw the last thread, but Im not really that passionate about 90's movies. 80's is a different story.

1. Return of the Jedi.
2. Predator.
3. Aliens.

There are many other movies from that decade that I really like, but its too hard to pick just two to round out my top five, so I'll just nominate my top three, which I loooove.
1. Back to the Future
2. SW: Empire Strikes Back
3. Aliens
4. Predator
5. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Those are my top 5.

Back to the Future is one of my favorites of all time, shame that the rest are derivative rehashes. I had a hard time picking an Arnold classic, since Commando and Terminator were battling for the same space. Although the Predator franchise has been soiled over time, the original still holds up.
1. The Thing
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Evil Dead
4. The Shining

Too brutal, I'm only posting 4 because they're the only ones I can say I love slightly more than the next dozen or so movies in the list. Should have been top ten for the 80s, there's way too many for a board that's probably mostly 25-35 year olds.

Only 1 other post with The Thing in? You people sicken me.
1. Elm Street 3
2. Aliens
3. Predator
4. Die Hard
5. E.T.
!. Aliens
2. Blade Runner
3. Rocky 4
4. First Blood
5. Terminator
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Back To The Future
3. The Goonies
4. Ghostbusters
5. Raiders Of The Lost Ark

That was tough. There are several other movies that I could have easily put in my top 5 list.... Beetlejuice, Princess Bride, Mad Max, Coming To America, Predator.... Just to name a few. The 80's was my favorite decade for movies.
1 - Who framed Roger Rabbit
2 - Ghostbusters
3 - The Thing
4 - Scarface
5 - The Fly
1: predator
2: aliens
3: die hard
4: empire strikes back
5: raiders of the lost ark
1. Blade Runner
2. Predator
3. Aliens
4. The Thing
5. Big Trouble in Little China
1: Aliens
2: The Empire Strikes Back
3: Predator
4: The 'Burbs
5: Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade

That list will change in 10 minutes as it's too difficult to separate 3-5.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Top Gun
The Terminator
Return Of The Jedi
Die Hard
Robocop
Commando
Clue
The Thing
The Running Man
Lethal Weapon
Beverly Hils Cop
The Goonies

Impossible.
This is likely a pretty uninformed list. Need to watch more 80s movies. I've only seen one of these in the last decade, so this is just gut feeling.

  1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
  2. Nausicaa
  3. Back to the Future
  4. Beetlejuice
  5. The Fly
indiana jones and the last crusade
conan the barbarian
the thing
escape from new york
the shining
Conan the Barbarian
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Coming to America
Big Trouble in Little China
Predator
aight because it's favourite, it's easier since I can just go with what my 10-year old self watched back then, rather than some kind of "official" best-of

The first movie where I felt like Bruce didn’t give his all was Tears of the Sun. That’s when I felt like he reached Uber millionaire status and he could phone it in. Some exceptions from time to time but yeah, that was the beginning of the end for me being a BW fan.

Id say his last likeable character was Korben Dallas, when he had a memorable character, sure he did the 6th sense, but wasn't exactly a showcase, or a character you were rooting for, he basically just stared at a kid for 90mins.

It's a real shame to see him just do Direct to DVD releases these days and barely even putting in a performance. Guy is insanely talented when he tries. I'm guessing he makes too much money for doing so little to care these days.

I picked Tears of the Sun up on DVD recently. The African war movie, right? I'm gonna give it a go. Was sorta deterred by the reviews after buying it, but looks palatable enough to be a watch every couple years deal.

I’ll try to vote later, in the meantime could anybody help me remember the name of a movie in which some kids played around an army base, they kinda had their secret base too.
This is the only thing I remember

It’s... okay. Story is good and it’s beautifully shot. Bruce I felt was a disappointment. It’s worth a watch though.

Yeah I agree with that. 6th sense was “wooden Willis”. I just figured that was his character. Then unbreakable came out and I realized he was exactly the same there too. So you’re probably right.

Must admit I didn't really notice him in Sixth Sense, almost like he was a ghost or something.

i-see-what-you-did-there

It was kind of hard for him to stand-out in that film though performance wise. The kid was brilliant in that film, and so was Toni Colette. Donnie Wahlberg often goes unnoticed as well but he's great in the beginning. Unrecognisable even.

Top Gun

Die Hard

Honorable mention to The Thing, Revenge of the Nerds and The Breakfast Club.
